Hat Tip: Super Hero Hype
See more from Duane on superheroes at PJ Lifestyle:
The various iterations of the Helicarrier have always looked cool, but there’s a major problem with the whole concept.
Lift fans, jets, or whatever with enough power to get the thing off the water (and surface suction on a ship the size of a Nimitz-class will be huge) will inevitably generate major entrained-flow turbulence over the flight deck. This makes launching and recovering aircraft pretty much impossible except when the ship is sitting on the water. If that’s the only place it can conduct flight ops, the whole platform’s pretty much a waste of effort.
And yes, I’m allowing for the “anti-gravity” thingies in it, as per the S.H.I.E.L.D. entries in The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, even though AG is one of those SF concepts I don’t buy. (I consider the jury to still be out on warp travel and teleportation above the quantum level.)
Actually there is a more blatant problem:
“Let’s blow over half our budget on fuel to keep ourselves in the air, so that our enemies can shoot us down!”
Wait a minute…it’s not full-sized? What a disappointment.
