But Does Paul Ryan Like Rush?
Over at PJ Media, Michael Walsh has this piece about Paul Ryan’s familiarity with the pro-freedom writings of Ayn Rand. But the unanswered questions is does Paul Ryan also like… Rush?
No, not the Rush from Florida silly. The Rush from Canada.
Let’s consider,
About my age (42ish): Check (Subdivisions!).
Reads Ayn Rand: Check.
Grew up within range of WMET-FM in Chicago in 1980s: Check
Libertarian tendencies: Check
And the most important thing, male: Check
Paul Ryan is 5 for 5 on the Rush probability index. Maybe his campaign can start playing some Rush now that the leftist bands he likes told him to stop playing them, like Rage Against the Machine.

i’ve always felt it was rush’s allusion and reference to ayn rand in “2112″ that kept them out of the hall of fame for ages
there is a definite connection between one’s proximity to the great lakes and a need to listen to rush
That’s a reason to thank God that I live as far away as you can possibly get from the Great Lakes and still be in the continental US. I’m a libertarian but I would rather stick my arm in a wood chipper than listen to Geddy Lee attempt to sing.
Maybe Rush would be the perfect music with which to ‘torture’ prisoners at Gitmo !
Eh, give poor Ged a break.
Their most famous (and consequently overplayed) songs were recorded when Rush were just coming out of their “Led Zeppelin Junior” phase. Stuff like “Working Man” and “Fly By Night” and the chipmunk-on-speed third verse of “Freewill” are indicative. “Tom Sawyer” is of course the most overplayed, but they were moving towards a more mature sound by then and consequently the vocals are more comfortable “The world is, the world is….”
As it happens, I like his sound right back through “Xanadu.” But it was an acquired taste: I had to learn to like the 80′s sound, then work backwards, stretching my ear a bit at each step.
But as I said, give Ged a break. His pitch and rhythm are as solid as any other artist you can mention and of course is range is better than most; and he has a good emotional expressiveness. He just has a nasaly reedy timbre. I suppose it’s almost Middle Eastern in character; you could hear that kind of voice calling people to mid-day prayer in some of the dustier countries. It’s certainly not for everyone, but it works quite well for the band.
God doesn’t give everybody Roy Orbison’s smoothness, but Ged did (does) very well with what he got.
People who don’t like Rush are missing out, or don’t realize what they’re missing. Rush is an awesome group who’ve inspired many bands.
Does he like The Who?

Does he like The Who?
Yes
I think Rush is a good bet to be on Ryan’s iPod. He admits to listening to Led Zeppelin and Metallica. Methinks he’s a classic rock fan.
