Demián Bichir has been nominated for Best Actor for his performance in A Better Life, which I reviewed here. (Story by Roger L Simon.)
With no false modesty (and little of the other kind) I’ll quote myself:
If the Academy is watching, and a bigger name actor isn’t playing a mental patient or tragic leftist politician, that one scene should get Bichir one of those gold statues.

Woo Hoo!
Congratulations Roger!
(And Charlie for tipping us off earlier. You should maybe do reviews too?)
JAL, I’ve been way out of the loop for the last three months because (a) major family illness, and (b) I’m writing a novel.
(a) is finally come to its end. I’m hoping to get back to much more regular activity in both Tatler and Lifestyle, and that’ll include reviews.
And thanks for asking.
I saw this movie on an international flight and was pleasantly surprised at how captivating it was. Demian Bechir deserves the nomination for sure. I didn’t realize to seeing this post that Roger Simon did the story.
There were so many ways this story could have gone wrong, but it played well the entire way.
Have a look back at my review — I thought the screenplay was just brilliant, frankly. I’m more than a little annoyed it didn’t get nominated as well.
Congrats, Roger!
With the movie makers trying to decide how we are going to use our internet, and
Mr. Redford telling us that his movies are only for the 99%, and, promoting a
fan club of stars who swat spit with Mr. Chavez.I think the movies and Hollywood
can survive without my meager support.
Your choice, but that’s a helluva movie.
