And so now we have it.

I thought I might need to try my small part to cheer people up and calm them down, but for once I have underestimated the American people.  People, by and large, seem not only calm but absolutely determined. Everywhere I have looked this morning the reaction seems to be more or less the same: a nation of steely-eyed missile men. These Marxist bastards have no idea what is coming for them. No idea.

What passed last night is a long way from the single-payer, socialist dream its supporters secretly — and not so secretly — really want. As a matter of fact, it’s hard to imagine a bill more perfectly constructed to tee off everyone: Conservatives hate it for it’s regulation, cost and explosive growth of government; liberals hate it because it forces people (so far, so good!) to buy premiums form the hated private insurance companies. (What the–!)

So, in terms of limiting the practical and immediate damage, holding it here — just holding it — is important and essential.  Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have an IQ of 130 — that would be combined between the three of them and you can get to 150 if you throw in Biden — and so they actually believe that a few months from now, they will be able to add single-payer to this goat rodeo, this bloodbath, this circus of incompetence conducted by this museum-grade confederacy of dunces. It got them a bill that requires people to pay for private insurance — which I am, of course, utterly opposed to on every level — but that is way short of single payer and we MUST hold the line here and not an inch further until reinforcements arrive in January. And they will. In numbers that will astonish and amaze the most optimistic among us.

We need to understand the great lesson we have learned about these people in this debate. Barack Obama is, to the liberal cause, a politician that comes not once in a decade, or once in a generation, or even once per century. Barack Obama is, to them, a once in history opportunity for progressives to control this country, and they will fall on a forest of swords to achieve those ends because this is the best chance they have ever had or ever will have to permanently shackle the people to the state. They know that this Health Care fiasco will cost them the House and now perhaps the Senate in November, but that new Congress will not seat until January and in the ten months between now and then they will, I predict, start an orgy of legislation that will make this Health Care circus look like a tea party.

But it seems to me that they have spent every dime of political capital in the bank and have done nothing less than awoken from its long and deep slumbers the American Giant, who in attempting to sit upright discovers the Lilliputian threads that have been staked into the ground with finishing nails and who looks around, blinking and disoriented, fatter and softer and much, much poorer than he was when he last opened his eyes back in 1941, but possessed now as then with a terrible anger and capable still of mighty exertions.

So, to the short term: everybody knows that Reid and Pelosi and The Lightworker himself, obviously, are all hoping to use this bill as the foot in the door for the stuff they really want:  a single-payer National Health System, or at least the “public option,” which is simply single-payer on the installment plan. We can’t let them get that. Going forward, we can’t let them get single-payer, or cap and trade, or amnesty, or any of it.

We can learn some lessons here. We have to. One lesson is message discipline. What is message discipline? I’ll give you an example:

What’s in a Big Mac?  Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun! That’s what’s in a Big Mac. We have got to understand that saying NO! to this socialism is admirable and essential, but that from now on there has to be a counter-narrative to what these Marxists are selling, because like it or not the human brain is wired for stories — that’s how we learn (and why the real fight is not for Washington but rather Hollywood — but that’s a story for another time.)

If we want to win on health care, or any other issue, we need to have an answer to what they are selling and that answer needs to be as simple and comprehensive as the Big Mac slogan.

Our position on health care?  Two tax incentives, health accounts, crossing state lines, tort reform, competition on an auto insurance bun. And if we don’t learn how to do this we will lose.

A final thought on this darkish day: much is said about the “inevitability” of these kinds of legislation, that once enacted they are impossible to repeal or roll back.

This kind of thinking is self-fulfilling defeatism and has to stop. ANY law enacted can be repealed. We repealed a constitutional amendment, for God’s sake. From now on we must change our message from one of limiting government growth and spending and regulation to one of reducing it.

It is true that no nation has in the past ever recovered from the cycle of entitlement, moral decay and aristocratic rot that we find ourselves in. But it is also true that no nation — not one in history — was established precisely in opposition to these cancers. It is also true that never before have common people — otherwise known as the Host Organism — had the means to speak directly to one another, as we are here. It is true that if there is to be an historical exemption to the Cycle of Civilization it is only here that it will occur, and it is also true that the concepts of Free Will and Destiny are antithetical to one another. One of them is true and the other is not. It is my belief that you can chose to abandon Free Will and chose to believe in destiny and historical inevitability, or you can take the risk to believe instead that there is a new world populated by optimists and dreamers, but dreamers with rifles as well as quills and parchment… People who have never surrendered and for whom the very idea of defeat and despair is anathema.

That’s a choice I make every day. What we see before us is the result of lost elections and redemption will come from winning elections. Mark these words, my friends: We are going to whip these Marxists out of their little commie boots!

    I sure hope you’re right. I for one, don’t think the next round of elections will go as well as a lot of people think. But then, I’ve always tended toward pessimism.

    In addition to trying to pass shamnesty, cap and steal, etc. in the coming months, look for the government also to try and get control of the internet in order to stifle dissent. America truly is in a fight for its life.

    I’m in the “angry but despondent” camp myself, Bill… the only ray of hope I had was over the weekend when my CongresScum (Loretta Sanchez) went missing. I wrote her (since no one was answering the phone) letting her know I would do something I had never before done; I would volunteer for whomever her opponent is this November, which I will do… but it seems such a small, inadequate thing in the face of such unspeakable tyranny and abuse. I fear for the world my children will inherit.

    We’ve been in a “Civil Cold War” for quite a while now, and I don’t see any way out of it without it getting pretty hot in the near future.

    I agree with you politically, but your perception of politics is delusional. To do what you want, Republicans need 60% of the house, 60% of the Senate, and the will to do it. None of the three is going to happen.

    Cuts like that didn’t happen under Newt Gingrich. cuts like that didn’t happen under Reagan. cuts like that aren’t going to happen. The Democrats are right-once its in place, its never going away. A few percentage points worth of angry white libertarians aren’t going to change the course of 51% of the people, the media, academia, the legal profession. Its over.

    I am glad that you bring up the 18th/21st amendments, because it is the best possible comparison to this.

    It IS possible to repeal unjust and unfair laws, even when they become enshrined in the Constitution of the United States.

    It may not be common. In fact, it may seem impossible because of the lack of success within most of our lifetimes. But is IS possible, and now necessary, to perform such a feat. Liberals believe in the power of of centralized government; that once given substance, it cannot be taken away. But liberals have always been blind to history, and what they cannot conceive of, we will make happen.

    We lost the first decisive battle last year when we allowed the country to be fooled by empty promises from an empty suit. We lost again last night, a direct result of the previous election. But this time we lost after a year of fighting, a year of fighting over lost ground. And we almost won. Despite the odds, we made them pay for this victory, and we are now in a position for the next ten months to limit every new victory, and claw ourselves back to the line where we were only a few months ago.

    And once we punch through this November, and those reinforcements are with us in January, we WILL take the fight to them. And while they may have weapons of their own, their side is not used to this kind of combat, of an opposition that is awakened, coordinated, but most importantly JUST in its course of action. And we will beat them. We will beat them, and starve them of funds, and beat them again in two years, and end this monstrosity.

    Thank you, Bill, for keeping our spirits up. It is too easy in times like this to be crushed by despair. Keep writing, for all of our sakes.

    Let me just add: let’s not lose sight of the big picture. Yes, bigger even than President Obama’s plans for America.

    Let’s not forget that there are plenty of other nations out there, many of whom don’t much like us. (Some like us less now than they did a year and a half ago; how about that?) Let’s not forget that terrorism has not gone away, simply because we were distracted by other things.

    I don’t know if we will see another 9/11 on our shores; I pray to God that we will not. But we do know that, to people who wish to do us harm, our current infighting spells opportunity.

    By all means, let’s get rid of this monstrosity of a bill, and let’s get rid of the people who dumped it on us. (Send them home, that is.) But keep your powder dry… and don’t forget who the enemy is.

    President Obama may well be misguided, undereducated, full of himself, unbelievably out of touch with the people who elected him, stubborn, and vengeful… but he is not the enemy. The enemy, as a clever man once wrote, is he who would give his life for the chance to take yours.

    I would like to see the lid ripped off the Gramscian stealth march through the institutions that has been going on since 1972. It has in effect established a state religion with which children are brainwashed from pre-K through post-graduate work. The founders may not have known the word “ideology,” but I am confident that they would see the connection at once.

    re: Daniel in Brookline. Please don’t take Obama lightly; he is the enemy. He is proving, while not giving up his life for our defeat, is certainly willing to give up his personal political life to that end. Losing the House and Senate, and yes, even the presidency in 2012 will be worth the gain accomplished if they are able to hold the ground gained and perhaps pick up a little immigration reform, as well.

    Here are some things I was thinking in November of 2008.

    What does all this mean? I simply can’t piece together an answer that doesn’t give rise to more questions.

    I don’t know what to believe, other than to say…I’m not convinced of anything I’m being told and am growing ever more suspicious of what I am not being told, what is being hidden and what is being done with the Left-handed Monkey Wrench that the Grass Curtain Plumbers are using on the truth.

    Massive voter registration fraud, massive campaign financing…with serious and dangerous circumvention of safeguards?

    Repeated, consistent and haunting connections with some of the most virulent haters of America; these haters attack on the salt of the earth small town folks and “flyover country” residents; an even more frontal assault on the Constitution; a “spread the wealth” economic distribution plan; an open suggestion that a “fairness doctrine” be imposed to shut down talk radio and possibly other dissenters; an outline to drastically curtail the military budget and reduce our ability to defend militarily against foreign enemies; replacing that role instead with a “private civilian army” not constrained by oversight of the military…instead reporting directly to the civilian Commander?

    Drown out opposing or dissenting voices? Kick them off the plane and shut them down on the airwaves? Take the property of the dissenters and give it to the loyal party workers? Indoctrinate schoolchildren and have them chant slogans and sing songs to the leader? Paramilitary exercises and “calls to action”, orders to “get in their faces” and browbeat your own parents and grandparents?

    The media suddenly and almost completely consumed by a lack of curiousity, it ceases to defend “the little guy”…but instead attacks them with a ferocity heretofore reserved for national politicians. They goosestep their way to salute the private seal, the absence of the flag, the Che Guevara poster.

    Let me summarize:

    1) Strip the military of funding and reduce its manpower and ability to defend;

    2) Strip the access of dissenters by kicking them off the plane, refusing access via the airwaves if they ask tough questions, institute a “fairness doctrine” to eliminate their voice on radio, possibly more on the way with the Internet.

    3) Strip the capital and property and begin to redistribute those funds and property to party loyalists;

    4) Attack the constitution, insert judges not elected by the people as operatives in redrafting it to suit the policies and procedures which the people never voted to approve.

    5) Build a civilian army of loyal party members, in a new revolutionary guard against enemies…whomever they may be.

    6) Take away the 2nd amendment rights of the people, by force, if necessary…because they “cling to guns and religion”. Not sure if religion is going to be allowed to “cling” to at this point, or if religious theater and theopolitics will be advanced.

    7) Replace traditional symbols with new ones…the flag is the “wrong” kind of patriotism…but personal seals, wall sized portraits, a personal flag for the Leader are the “right” kind. Posters of fellow revolutionaries appears to be ok as well.

    8) Nationalized healthcare, nationalized banking and finance, nationalized insurance, nationalized 401k’s, nationalized homeownership, nationalized energy, nationalized education, nationalized agriculture and food production.

    9) Elections rife with voter registration fraud and political operatives blocking investigation into the massive, overt and clear attempts to rig an election for one candidate with ties to the offending organizations. Jimmy Carter will be called in to announce that the elections are “fair”.

    10) Massive evidence of campaign finance irregularities, foreign influence and laundered money, in order to buy more votes. Control from an outside agency or country is hidden and denied.

    11) Louder and more vicious attacks on Jewish people popping up as a “gutter religion”, the “cause of massive suffering”, the “reason there is no peace”. A team is assembled to “reduce the Zionist influence”.

    If I was going to start a revolution…I certainly couldn’t pick a better groundwork or foundation than this

    Here is the problem in a nutshell. When the entrenched media decided to cast off the last vestiges of their pretense as guardians of the truth and as impassive seekers of fact…when they decided to openly and nakedly rig the election by and through their powers of distortion, they sealed off the portals to inquiries such as this.

    The question is not now, nor has it ever been for anyone with an IQ above an ACORN…whether Senator Obama flirted with extreme far left radical ideology. It is pure sophistry to suggest otherwise. What has not been asked, in point of fact, what has been shielded from view for the American voting public…is how much took hold and how much remains in place.

    Only when the prepared speeches end and the off the cuff mark seeps out of its shackles in the dungeon of duplicity, can we get a glimpse through the tower at the prisoner waiting to escape.

    We are to assume, and then believe on a leap of faith…that “Frank” Marshall Davis…who sat the young Barry at his knee and told him how to think like a CPUSA member, yet left no mark upon the impressionable lad. (apparently in between abusing substances and 13 year old girls)

    We are to assume, and then believe on a leap of faith that the radical professors at college (perhaps Edward Said being one?), and the radical fringe students with whom he chose to spend his free time, left no mark upon the worldview he was developing.

    We are to assume, and then believe on a leap of faith that the Saul Alinsky training on how to “beat a democracy to death with its own rule book”, left no mark upon the use of the system to install radical extreme destruction and replacement into it, by pretending to be a non-threat to the middle class.

    We are to assume, and then believe on a leap of faith that the funneling of hundreds of millions of dollars to “reeducation camps” which indoctrinated schoolchildren in the cultism of William Ayers view of this country, was a misread of the situation and because “Republicans” had their “names” involved as well…it was not a bad thing after all.

    We are to assume, and then believe on a leap of faith, that the selection of Jeremiah Wright’s house of hate, inspired as it is upon the Marxist-black nationalist screed of James Cone…was merely a place to hang a prayer book on Sunday and offers no further exposure into the mind of the Democratic nominee for President.

    We are to assume, and then believe on a leap of faith, that the dinners with wives and tasty wines and cheeses with Rashid Khalidi was merely an intellectual evening of professorial chatter and stories about living abroad, rather than an embrace of the notion that suicide bombers are honorable martyrs in a just cause.

    We are to assume these things and more, based upon a leap of faith…because the truth remains sequestered behind the ink barrels and celluloid confines of a corrupt media prison. It is shackled and gagged and we only hear faint muffled shouts for freedom, when the campaign makes a slip of the tongue.

    “THEY are bitter, angry slothful, but WE are the change you have been waiting for”

    “THEY cling to their little religions, our religion is based upon political theater. THEY say their little prayers to their inferior deity, we declare if our deity doesn’t kill THEM, we must kill our deity”

    “THEY salute their little flag and wear their little flag on their lapels, we stomp on that flag with dirty boots, because it is the “wrong” kind of patriotism”.

    Oh…but if you point out these people….the Maoists whose blog disappears the day he is discovered, the playing of the God should damn America speech, the New Party membership….you are attacked as a “right wing demon”.

    GUILT BY ASSOCIATION! GUILT BY ASSOCIATION!… is shouted by the guards at the gates where truth is held hostage.

    No, guilt by affirmation. It is not the association that raises the question at hand. It is the affirmation by act, affirmation by deed, affirmation continued fealty to the ideology. It is the lack of examination of these acts of affirmation that condemns the entrenched media as co-conspirators.

    For so long, Saul Alinsky said…the imbeciles who attacked the system from the outside with violence were making it harder to tear it down from the inside with its own rules, its own Constitution. You did not need to set bombs, you needed to set traps.

    “YOU are not gonna like what we do and the polls are going to drop…but then you will “come around” to see that we are right”. (except for the 25 million who don’t perform in the reeducation camps, apparently, they will disappear under the boot of Ayers along with our flag)

    “We need more government” “We need to redistribute YOUR wealth, in order to make things “fair”. And, if you protest…then we will impose a “fairness doctrine”…and our “civilian army” will enforce it.

    We will have a new Presidential seal, you will hang portraits of our Dear Leader from your buildings, we will have forced conscription into working for US…you know…kind of like slavery…only better…since its for the “cause”.

    Foreign money is now acceptable to assist in our elections. Voter registrations are ensured “fairness” by “impartial” overseers of the PARTY. The list of voters on OUR side has swelled beyond mathematical comprehension.

    You will never, ever, ever win another election. The PARTY has decided to redraw all the districts. Your voice and your vote will be drowned in a sea of corruption. All for your own good.

    Now, give me your wallet while I redistribute your wealth. Joe the Plumber, you ask? I don’t know…he seems to have disappeared. The state media has some nice music for you to listen to tonight. Please ignore those screams from the dungeon and enjoy your evening.

    On Sunday March 21, 2010 the House of Representatives declared unconditional war against the American people.

    We accept the challenge and plan for nothing but triumph.

    Our government has, for quite some time, become too large, too expensive, too intrusive. Americans, in their benevolence, have tolerated the expense and the intrusion.

    No more. It is time to slay the dragon, one vote at a time, one Congressional district at a time, one state at a time, and one election at a time, from President all the way down to Dogcatcher. No office should be safe, no program inviolable, no agency invulnerable.

    This is our country, not theirs. While we struggle to reclaim it do not forget that.

    I am confident that Obama, Pelosi, and Reid believe that the opposition’s fight was fully spent on contesting passage of this legislation, and that the battle will now be over for the American people. These “leaders” hope that we will roll over and simply accept what is coming – our hands out, and our minds washed.

    Had the founders taken such an attitude, they would have cowered and capitulated when the British sailed into New York harbor in June of 1776. It would have been easy to give in at that point.

    But they countered, even in the face of very direct opposition, and authored a document for the ages. They SIGNED it with pride, and ultimately prevailed over a crooked monarchy.

    The question is whether the American people still have the stuff that the founders did. With the right leadership, a few reminders of historical revolutionary success, and some simple education on the constitutional process, I think we have a chance to make a difference.

    Just prior to reading your post I emailed the Republican National Committee stating that I would support Republicans financially if they would hire an honest-to-god advertising agency, rather than the usual media consultant hacks, to develop a creative, coherent campaign.
    I’m gratified that someone I consider smarter than me is thinking along similar lines.

    Bill, the first thing we need is a retaliatory salvo against the one stupid argument that’s been brought against us again and again (probably because it’s been so successful). You know the one. You can probably chant it in your sleep. “Republicans want to hurt/kill women/children/the elderly/minorities with this policy.”

    It’s time we destroy that canard. Just crush it to the dust.

    Because right now it’s obvious to me and a lot of other people that the opposition *wants to hurt everyone.* And we need to start saying so, regularly, vociferously, and backed with facts and statistics.

    No, Daniel in Brookline, you are wrong. America has the military might to utterly crush its enemies abroad. What its government currently lacks (and even lacked under Bush) is the moral confidence to use this might with the ruthlessness required.

    Great nations collapse due to decay from within, not due to external attacks. Our current Congress and President are emblematic of such decay. They are indeed our enemies — our ideological enemies — who pose a greater threat to freedom in America than the most devoted Islamic fanatics.

    WE the people are the same TEXANS and ALABAMANS who MADE THE CHARGE UP little roundtop to fight for what they believed in with that last full measure to face those brave men from MAINE who believed the same.

    WE the people are all the one who MADE THE CHARGE into the center of an unmovable force on that last decisive day in July for all that mattered in the world, FREEDOM. We are also those who FORMED the center and held the angle at all costs.

    WE the people are the inheritors of the bravery and stun stuff of those who stormed the beaches and FREED FESTUNG EUROPA from a mass murdering madman of the broken cross and and his legions in black uniforms at huge and painful cost so that OTHERS MIGHT BE FREE!

    WE the people flew as INDIVIDUALS with our heroes in the mighty 8th during full daylight over Germany to subdue the same foe at the literal cost of thousands of our best because it had to be done and they did it knowing, KNOWING the enemy had prepared and was expecting them. We the people are the SAME now as we were then. We just have to be awakened..

    WE the people are the same who fought and defeated a fanatical Asian enemy bent on the utter domination of ‘lesser’ humans who had attacked us unawares. Yet in our mercy let both formerly bitter enemies up easy to for as lasting and honest relationship with both. Not for long has hate or malice endured in our collective hearts.

    WE the people are those same who RUN TO misery and heartache and human suffering to alleviate and comfort! WE the people do not FLINCH, we DO NOT FAIL, and WE DO NOT RUN!

    While we may have had a large and dis-hearting temporary defeat for those who love LIBERTY,

    WE THE PEOPLE have faced down much bigger men than the current occupant of the office of the President of the United States and his minions of minions. We shall send him and his like to the ash heap of history with all the others who dared test the will and effort of WE THE PEOPLE!

    I go for the reduction in government, which will have the additional benefit of putting many statists out of a sinecure.

    The abolition of the Departments of Education and Energy would be a start. Curriculum discipline at state and government levels would put many medicine shows back on the road.

    The EPA was established by executive order. Can it be abolished thus?

    We need a moderate environmental policy of reasonably clean air and water. I no more believe that academics can predict the future than I believe astrologers can.

    Our economic problems can only be solved by the production of wealth. That requires re-industrialization. After all, the families of the people the governments must let go need to earn a living.

    And those who provide jobs should by-pass the universities, and hire more high school graduates, training them on the job, or providing a part time education, subject to curriculum approval by the benefactor.

    So much to do, and so apparently impossible to convince enough of the voters. How much longer can the left count on the decency of strangers?

    In practice, with the exception of gestures like a donation to Scott Brown, I am staying on the sidelines. The GOP has played me for a sucker for years, and I suspect that they are trying to sucker me into backing a de facto Bush restoration.

    I’m with the people who say that Obama is Bush on steroids. For example, see this, this, and this.

    My vote for Scott Brown was a vote for divided government, not a vote for the Republican Party. I will no longer support the GOP or self-styled “conservatives” just because they’d wreck the country more slowly than Obama is doing.

But I think we could get very far *also* saying that whatever we thought was a good idea in governance a few days/months/years ago should be periodically reviewed and the worst of it should be repealed. It would be a repeat of BRAC which did that service for military bases. We keep evaluating and dropping the least worthy programs until our tax revenues match spending.

    If we can make that sort of spending reduction the norm in boom times when we’re carrying deficits, the republic may yet endure.

    We need to pound home the evils — the inevitable, baked-in evils — that result when government is permitted to control our lives.

    Too much of the “muddle” has the impression that conservatism is about saving money and supporting the military. They really just don’t understand the axioms on which our country was founded. (I call them that because I don’t believe in God.)

    They don’t really object all that strongly as their freedoms are stolen, because they don’t see trajectory and because they don’t see the evil of it.

    And there is no doubt — this is evil. It is pure evil to enslave another human being, and yet again Democrats are at it, one little piece at a time.

      I believe that it is not just the Democrats that seek to enslave us because I am convinced that the problem is not Democrat or Republican, Conservative or Liberal but all of the above. The entire system is broken…probably beyond repair as it has been going on since the 1860s. The Two Party System has been effective at dividing people of all these united States between Republican and Democrat..Conservative and Liberal for a very long time. It’s one of the oldest strategies…Divide and Conquer. So long as We the People cling to the old ways: the two party system, the federal reserve, the electoral collage and everything else that is part of the way we’ve been doing business siince the close of the Civil War then nothing will change. Voting all the incumbants out of political office won’t change anything..the new ones will just end up corrupted like the old ones. There are only two ways I can see to secure our future safety and happiness and they are: 1) a Constitutional Convention to start things anew or 2) State Secession from the union. The way I see it unless we use one of those two methods to right things..it will continue to be as it has for the last a hundred and fifty years..business as usual with We the People being the losers as one party or another expands the federal government to encompass every aspect of our lives and we’ll be enslaved by one master or another but the end will be the same: tyranny and the death of liberty.

Congress outlasted us as they thought they would; they moved to use political trickery to achieve their goals as we maintained our same efforts; laud rallies, writing and Emailing. We were late to even demonstrate at congressional offices and who picketed their Rep`s and Senator`s offices as I did and where was my support for continuous picketing or my standing at street corners for 30 weeks with messages to alert my fellow Americans. We never ramped up our activities to peaceful sit-ins and disruption of government and congressional offices.

    Had MLK used our limited methods, chances are we would still have some form of segregation. The sucessful 1999 TN Tax Revolt was instigated by talk radio and Emails, so it can work if the people will get up off their couches to protect their freedom. So who in the media or even congress called for the same proactive peaceful efforts that achieved MKLs victory. People were not so bashful in the early 1960s. Heck, on Saturday when constituents were locked out of their Representative`s office and the staff threatened to call the police, the people left the public area complaining instead of calling for support and doing a legal silent standing protest in the hallways. I know for a fact that they could have done that legally until the building closed and even followed their Rep throughout the public areas of the Capitol complex. Our supposed betters hate having their freedom impinged and we could video their arrogance.

    I am disappointed that our citizens do not even have the respect of our military and civilian dead and life long disabled who have sacrificed for our liberties to sacrifice even a little to protect that hard earned gift. Shame on us.

    The health care reform act, like the voting rights act and the social security act is filled with deep emotions from both sides of the arguement. My lawyer once told me that, in many cases…when each side feels like they are cheated in court, justice has prevailed. Both sides felt cheated on this one…so you and I know what that means.

    So what..you pay ten bucks more a month in tax, but 32 million more have access to health care if they are hit by any number of horrible illnesses. Things could be worse as far as taxes go, trust me, I live in Europe most of the time. This bill will not be repealed, ever, so…like voting rights and social security, both sides of the aisle will make it their own over the years to come. And yes, Republicans will bend over backwards to get some credit for “fixing it” once they decide to lead and get some ideas in the future. Good Luck to them !

If they had pushed through Two tax incentives, health accounts, crossing state lines, tort reform, competition on an auto insurance bun between 2000-2008, there would be no debate now. You can’t blame Democrats on stopping the Republican health reform plans from passing, because the Democrats certainly didn’t get any help from the Republicans when it was their turn.

    The GOP does not care about health reform, they just want Democrats out of power so they can go back to running their agenda, and health care reform is not on it. If you think this bill is a travesty, then the Republicans should share part of the blame, for running the country so pissed poor that they allow the Democrats to win back the Presidency, and both House majorities.     In addition I think we should come up with something for (true)conservatives to use to separate them from the (traditional)conservatives(the ones that are also part of the problem-and there’s quite a few…), as a 3rd party is NOT feasible. Maybe we could call them NEW CONSERVATIVES and come up with some kind of a contract that is binding(not that we don’t trust them…) that they will required to honor(for our support)-if they don’t we can boot them, anytime,if this could be made legally possible(in our local districts). It seems like this could be done with existing rules, regulations, and contracts-you could never get any kind of new legislation passed for this purpose. The tea-party movement has gained some pretty serious followers, but needs leverage, for their common-sense ideas and principles, plus the (traditional)conseratives need them-they realize this movement could split our (once-great)party, giving carte-blanche to the dem-no-nuts. Each of these raise premiums and force people to purchase insurance for a risk they may not be facing. Some of them are downright humorous (and thus wasteful). In one state, for example, health insurance must pay for pastoral counseling.

    If the federal government has any Commerce Clause role in regulating health insurance, it should be limited to defining a standard, bare bones, high deductible catastrophic insurance policy. Such a policy might be a way for a lot of the uninsured to have last-ditch protection. It certainly would be a way to cut costs for those of us who want to self-insure against the routine risks of normal life.

It’s battered & unusable now, but in it’s time it was used to fight for freedom from a Federal government overreaching into the rights of the people & the States without due process of law. It wasn;t used to defend slavery– my great-great grandaddy was a poor farmer, raising 10 kids on 100 acres of bottom-land. that musket was used to defend Alabama, her people, and her rights as enshrined in the Constitution of the United States.

    And that musket is to me an eternal reminder that Jefferson was right. When the government becomes inimical to the rights of the people, the people have a right & a duty to alter or abolish that government. Let’s do it at the ballot-box this November, and again in 2012. And if we can’t, let the People of the Several States call a Constitutional Convention to clarify the 10th Amendment, repeal the 16th & 17th, & restore Liberty to the Republic.

    So here’s a prediction for you: Obamacare is not going to happen, regardless of the fact that the president is going to sign it into law today, regardless of what happens in the 2010 and 2012 elections, and regardless of any speech given anywhere in Washington. If Nancy Pelosi thinks the Republicans are obstructionists, wait until she wants to borrow money from people who don’t want to lend it to her and don’t have to run for reelection.

    The bottom line is we can’t afford this. The US is about to lose its AAA bond rating. Social Security, Medicaid, the US Postal Service – they’re all going broke.

FDR ushered in the era of the social welfare state and LBJ expanded it at time when American wealth and power seemed limitless. No, Reagan and Gingrich couldn’t end it – for all of our fears about the Japanese in the ’80′s, the US economy was still going gangbusters then. After reading your work, those of other PJM bloggers and many history books and texts I had to read thanks to my father (I was home educated due to discipline issues), this is not ideal socialism, social programs or a new wonderful government. It is how people in power fight tooth and nail to stay in power.

    An out of touch, bloated government needs reform right now. I do believe that health care does need some work, but it is STILL THE BEST IN THE WORLD. They will find very quickly that they system is being rocked by people…not activists, people. People who have access to information from books, the Internet, people around the world and can draw their own conclusions on how social programs in other countries work, for good or bad. This isn’t the Dark Ages and the people can find out how things really work.

    We are still a young country and still have our pride in what we have done and what we can do should we put our mind and will into it. Those in power that refuse to move on when their service is ended and giving others a chance to serve the country (oh no…actually SERVE someone else out of duty, honor and personal growth? *sarcasm added*) in the same way are roadblocks that can be removed.

    I’m an American. I was born in the Deep South, I’ve lived all over the country, from New England to the West Coast, I’ve done cross-country road trips from Oregon through Texas and New Mexico up to New York, and I know this: Wherever you go, we all want the same things. Security and prosperity for our country, our loved ones, and ourselves. No one doesn’t want that. No one says, “I think we should tank our economy, drown our grandchildren in debt, and leave the country wide open to attack. Yeah, that’ll work out great.”

    What we disagree on is how to achieve and maintain prosperity and security. We all have our own ways of doing things, and we all believe our ways are the best ways; if we didn’t, we’d find other methods, and use them instead.

    But that’s what democracy is, and that’s why it works so well; it’s about coming together, pooling the best of our ideas, deciding which of those ideas to put into practice, and then making it happen.

    Democracy is not about one group always being right, and some other group always being wrong. No one group is right all the time, and believing otherwise leads to a very slippery slope. It’s not about keeping score, it’s not about settling scores, and it’s not meant to be a game of “whoever shouts the loudest wins.” It’s about coming to agreements — and one of those agreements is that no one group gets their way all the time.

    Now — here’s the Invisible Hand in action — if people vote in a bad idea, or representatives of a bad idea, and that idea turns out to be as bad as people feared, then people turn around and vote it out. The best ideas rise to the top and stay there, and the bad ones get filtered out on election day.

    The right approach is to put forth a persuasive argument, convince people to see things your way by showing them the truth of your position. Bill is great at that; he’s eloquent, he’s well-informed, usually pretty reasonable, and he speaks with great passion and conviction.

    Emotions are very powerful things, and just as they can fuel the passion needed for the right approach, they can cloud our judgment and lead us to the wrong one.

    The wrong approach is get in people’s faces, shout, and call names. When you label your opponents — and pick any nasty label, any loaded word — you start to think of them as less than fellow Americans, less than individuals, less than people — at least less than people on your own level. You start to think of them not as competitors or opponents, but enemies. And enemies are something to hate and fear. They want to hurt you, hurt the things and the people and the country you love. Their words are only there to deceive you. And while opponents are only there to be defeated, enemies have to be destroyed. Us or them.

    It goes without saying that the “enemies” mindset is not what democracy is meant for, that it’s unhealthy for our politics and for our society. We all wonder, “How could anyone vote for the other guy?” “How could anyone want what the other guy stands for?” But at the same time, we all know people personally who voted for the other guy, who stand by what the other guy stands for. Good people, smart people. People who love their families as much as we love ours, and who love the country just as much as we do, and who want the county to succeed and prosper just as much as we do.

    The enemies we fight, the enemies we hate, the enemies who despise their country and want to see it destroyed — those aren’t the people we know. Or the hundreds of millions just like the people we know.

    Hatred won’t bring this country happiness. Labels won’t bring this country happiness. Revenge, name-calling, “I know you are, but what am I?” — none of those things will help. What our society needs most, when it comes to politics, is mutual respect, and the recognition on all sides that we all want to see America succeed, and that all we need to do is come together, agree on the best path forward, and do all we can to make it happen.

They got inside our decision loop and prempted us conservatives by encouraging those interested in immigration reform (200,000?) to rally in Washington AT THE SAME TIME….this allowed them get a larger group of people to ‘trump’ the news cycle for all MSM who needed to report on why people were rallying in DC. It allowed them to somewhat ignore the Tea Partiers (25,000) resisting healthcare cram down…. (Google “OODA loop” in wikipedia)

    We must take note of this…They KNEW we would call for a mass rally and they acted inside of this knowledge to thwart our efforts..

    If the republicans can take back the House they can do the whole country a favor by not funding the “health care (insurance)” law while it is being taken to the Supreme Court over constitutional issues. Plus all States have the 10th Amendment and can pass “Nullification” of this bill, all they have to do is deem the legislation unconstitutional and pass it through both the House and Senate and have the Governor sign it. In Tennessee such legislation has already passed the Senate with votes soon in the House, not sure about the Governor but his terms are up this year anyway and most likely will be replaced by a Republican!

    First of all, I have friends and family in the USA, and lived in Phoenix, Arizona for 10 years in the 1960′s and ’70′s, during my youth.

    I must admit, therefore, that I am not a completely unbiased observer.

    Currently, I live in Ontario Canada. And, before I forget to make the point: It may come as a stunning shock to many Americans, that we are not your enemies, nor are we Communists, Fascist, or sub-humans. We have our faults and failures, but also our qualities and successes.

    Yet, sadly, I must say the both of America’s great parties failed in the recent medical debates and debacles.

    There were other, better, and more truthful options in this health care mess…. (And note, I am certainly not saying that the system we have up here was the “big answer”, either…)

    Yet instead, fear and rhetoric, and politics has caused much harm to many American Citizens, while not helping those that truly needed help… and not doing a thing to combat the horrid waste that has been going on for far too long.

    I cannot go into a debate on all the issues here, it is late, and I have neither the time or space to do so.

    But I sincerely hope that America can pull itself together in the near future, stop the infighting, fix the problems, help those who HONESTLY need help (and are not just con artists), and carry on.

    On the bright side, the combined Bush/Obama bail outs, did yield one small ray of light and hope. It appears Citi Bank may have put the worst of the meltdown behind it, and according to reports, I hear Uncle Sam may make a small profit of $8 billion on the deals that were done. (Note that $8B, is a mere pittance compared the the horrors wreaked on the global economy by people who basically gambled and speculated with ordinary citizen’s money, by dealing in financial instruments no lone person, or small group of them can comprehend.)

    Tragically, I am sadly in the opinion, that while Mrs Obama/Bidden are not evil incarnate, they are not the great answer many hoped for. But then again, neither would Palin or McCain be the golden answers.

    As to who, or how, to find workable solutions, I admit, I myself am currently at a loss for concrete recommendations. There are too many problems, too many issues, too many challenges in the nexus. Both sides have good and bad points. (And space here, precludes a logical discussion.)

    A point I made in a previous post (regarding your excellent essay about the tragic events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki – which should, incidentally, be required reading for all Citizens), I shall now repeat:

    A patriot is a patriot, not because he is Republican or Democrat, or something else. A patriot is a patriot, because he tries to best serve the needs and wishes of all the people of the Republic, as well as the Republic itself.

    Less politics, less inflammatory talk, less hatred, more cooperation and constructive criticism, and more ideas that can yield workable solutions are needed.

    Good luck, America! AND: That luck is sorely needed.

    The trick is in actually demonstrating – with some sort of, you know, evidence – that hoarding is actually happening at all. Poor, clueless vivo is inferring that “hoarding” is responsible for the current difficulty in procuring ammunition. Does s/he have some evidence that anyone is hoarding ammunition? So far… no.

    20x100x1000x360= 720 million bullets/year

    A small factory produces 1.2m per year.

    So maybe they are not hoarding, just helping the Economy by keeping those factories working.

    That’s how I’d tend to look at it too. And at the rate the socialists and RINOs in our government are destroying the economy, I’m sure it’s sorely needed and much appreciated business for all the people employed by those companies, and their families.

    The problem is – at least the last time I checked – many ammunition manufacturers have added second and even third shifts, and still can’t keep up with the demand. So we’re back to the original issue. The same was true for firearms (may still be). I went shopping for one of these a while back. Everywhere I checked, they were back ordered with no projected delivery date. If I buy a back-up gun, am I “hoarding”? I don’t think so.

    There are two things that can, and should, be done…..Defund and Disobey. The House controls the purse-strings – insist that your Representatives defund the bill – and it doesn’t matter if it’s now “law” – it won’t be done.

    The other is something that WE can do, now and every day….DISOBEY. It is our responsibility to refuse to obey unconstitutional laws (notice I didn’t say law that we don’t like). There are lots of great ideas on this website: http://www.defundanddisobey.com

    By the way, those who are going on about “hoarding” or “not hoarding” – does it matter? I’m stocking up on nonperishables, too…does that mean I’m “hoarding”? So what? What’s wrong with hoarding? I’m preparing to protect and provide for my family should we have hyperinflation and all of the ills that accompany that. I live in town – it’ll be ugly. And I’m not going into that night without a fight. So, I’m collecting what I think we might need. LOTS of people are – so demand is up. Big deal.

    I take GREAT comfort in knowing that most of the guns belong to conservatives (probably because valuing life is a moral value and most liberals don’t believe in morals) for the defense of their families. And those people are quietly stocking up, too. Not doing so is irresponsible…so your comments about it somehow being a bad thing just show you for a fool. Grow up – or run home to mommy, who is hopefully stocking up some food for your childish ass.

    The article at this link only mentions the “hoarding” of ammo once. Here’s what the author says in that regard:

    A customer I spoke with at Bass Pro Shops (the employees wouldn’t speak with me for an article) actually owns a gun shop, but he was buying ammunition there because his wholesaler had run out. His customers are hoarding ammunition and, to a lesser extent, guns.

     
    So here we have a second hand account of someone else’s speculation. Are the customers actually hoarding? Who knows. All we have is a claim by the author about a claim made by someone he claims he spoke to. What the actually customers were doing? No way to know.

    He goes on to relate a third-hand anecdotal tale about events that occurred at a gun show. Plausible? I suppose. But do we know these people were “hoarding” and not simply trying to get enough ammo to attend a three-day training session somewhere? Uhm… no. Any idea how many boxes of ammo you go through Smith & Wesson Academy’s Defensive Handgun Tactics & Techniques or Concealed Carry Handgun courses? Somehow I doubt it. In fact I’m quite sure you’ve never even considered it. It got to be such an issue that they started including ammo with the course. If you enroll in a Gun Site course, for instance, you’ll have to bring along anywhere from 500 to 1200 rounds of whatever you’re shooting. Since a LOT of people are trying to get in the training to apply for CCW permits and such, it’s much more likely that this is the sort of thing that makes people appear to be “hoarding”.

    On your other (CNN) cite, I don’t even have to mention CNN’s lack of credibility on a topic like this, because you cleverly omitted the excerpt raised questions about whether there’s any hoarding actually happening:

    “Jim Minardi, a gun dealer in Lakewood, Colorado, says only a few people are actually hoarding. But they are buying up so much ammo that there isn’t much left on the shelves.”

    Oh well, I’m sure you didn’t read past the point where you could copy and paste something that matched your world view.

    To Mr. Minardi’s comments, I would say add: any idea how much ammo you go through – or, at least, should go through – if you carry concealed and you’re being conscientious about keeping your shooting and gun handling skills sharp? Again, I doubt it. When demand goes up, as it has been, and ammo gets scarce, you buy a lot of whatever you can find in order to fill anticipated need down the road. I suppose some people would call that “hoarding”. Maybe you do. I don’t.

    You are right about us not falling into a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe this Obama-Read-Palosi fiasco has caused many to wake up and realize what is happening. However, there is still much work to be done as far as getting more people to understand the terrible track we are on. The idea about us getting a slogan together is absolutely necessary. One thing you did not bring up is the possibility of amnesty being next on the list. If the vast amount of illegal aliens become voters in the upcoming elections who do you think they will vote for? Our enemies running D.C. are anticipating the backlash and the steps are underway for their continued “reign of terror.” The battle is on, but it is an enormous one with heavy implications and we must ban together and choose to never back down.

    As a Southerner, I am descended from the only Americans who’ve ever lost a war. But as a descendant of veterans of the Revolution, the Indian Wars, WWI, & WWII, I also know that the American spirit will ultimately prevail. As I write this, I’m looking at my great-great grandaddy’s Confederate States’ Army-issue musket. It’s battered & unusable now, but in it’s time it was used to fight for freedom from a Federal government overreaching into the rights of the people & the States without due process of law. It wasn;t used to defend slavery– my great-great grandaddy was a poor farmer, raising 10 kids on 100 acres of bottom-land. that musket was used to defend Alabama, her people, and her rights as enshrined in the Constitution of the United States.
