The Age of Intolerance

December 20th, 2013 - 7:16 pm

Mark Steyn contrasts the big media stories of the week — the emergence of Obamacare-shilling Footie Pajamas Boy and the attempted banishment to the ninth circle of television Siberia of Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson and concludes:

Look, I’m an effete foreigner who likes show tunes. My Broadway book was on a list of “Twelve Books Every Gay Man Should Read.” Andrew Sullivan said my beard was hot. Leonard Bernstein stuck his tongue in my mouth (long story). But I’m not interested in living in a world where we have to tiptoe around on ever thinner eggshells. If it’s a choice between having celebrity chefs who admit to having used the N-word in 1977 (or 1965, or 1948, or whenever the hell it was) and reality-show duck-hunters who quote Corinthians and Alec Baldwin bawling out some worthless paparazzo who’s doorstepping his family with a “homophobic” slur, or having all of them banished from public life and thousands upon millions more too cowed and craven to speak lest the same fate befall them, I’ll take the former any day.

Because the latter culture would be too boring for any self-respecting individual to want to live in, even more bloody boring than the current TV landscape where, aside from occasional eruptions of unerotic twerking by sexless skanks, every other show seems to involve snippy little Pajama Boys sitting around snarking at each other in the antiseptic eunuch pose that now passes for “ironic.” It’s “irony” as the last circle of Dante’s cultural drain; it’s why every show advertised as “edgy” and “transgressive” offers the same pitiful combination of attitude and impotence as a spayed cat humping.

Read the whole thing. As I said back at the start of the month, you went full Weimar, America — never go full Weimar.

The fallout from this still has to play out -- A&E has another season of the show already on tape, Phil and all, and my guess is their moral preening isn't going to keep them from trying to maximize their profits as much as possible, while minimizing the appearances of the patriarch in their promotional ads, or even re-editing episodes at the same time to be almost Phil-free, to keep the PC crowd the A&E/Disney/Hearst suits hang out with appeased.

Will it work? Only if the Robertsons are cowed by this, and that's not likely. They make be making more money than ever before because of the show and the marketing rights and other benefits around "Duck Dynasty", but we're not talking the cast of "The Jersey Shore" here who had no big source of income prior to MTV coming along. Phil and the others can keep being themselves and basically dare A&E to prematurely pull the plug on the show, knowing there are still outlets on cable that would willingly take the ratings and ad billings "Duck Dynasty" would bring.

The firing of Phil Robertson is another episode in the replacement of the mores of the West by its successor. This replacement is comparable to the Christianizing of the Roman empire. Some will be disgraced, some imprisoned, some destroyed on the path to the victory of totalizing Socialism. Already race Socialism (formerly known as National Socialism), class socialism (formerly known as Communism) and gender Socialism (no cute name yet), form the mental and ideological landscape of almost all peoples of the West (but apparently not Phil). Use of the word “homophobe,” for example, an American adaptation of Soviet psychiatry similar to other Soviet terms such as “wrecker” (used to describe opponents, of among other things, Obamacare) and “kulak” (too localized to be useful in the USA).

Phil apparently hasn’t heard that all orifices, natural and artificial, are suitable for pleasures (fisting, fingering, licking, sucking, et. al.) of the various sexual identities. Look to the poets’ support of NAMBLA. Nothing is forbidden. The idea that people should not indulge their animal appetites is an idea which died with philosophy (replaced by ideology), religion (replaced by spirituality), and God (dead, as often proclaimed; and replaced by self).

Steyn wrote: “GLAAD spokesgay Wilson Cruz declared that ‘Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe.’ What GLAAD is attempting would be called, were it applied to any other identity group, cultural appropriation.’” The totalitarianism exhibited by GLAAD is not an aberration. Hatred, censorship, bigotry, repression are inherent in the GLAAD’s ideology. Obama has transformed us. A transformation for which the American people voted, then affirmed at the next election. Get used to the new normal.

"You must remember Dis where a kiss is not a kiss as Tom goes Baaaaaaa."

So Base Canard now refers to a quack for Obama?
