Does Chomsky Consider This a Bug or a Feature?

August 13th, 2013 - 3:27 pm

“After multiple denials, CIA admits to snooping on Noam Chomsky,” Foreign Policy reports:

The breakthrough in the search for Chomsky’s CIA file comes in the form of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. For years, FOIA requests to the CIA garnered the same denial: “We did not locate any records responsive to your request.” The denials were never entirely credible, given Chomsky’s brazen anti-war activism in the 60s and 70s — and the CIA’s well-documented track record of domestic espionage in the Vietnam era. But the CIA kept denying, and many took the agency at its word.

Now, a public records request by FOIA attorney Kel McClanahan reveals a memo between the CIA and the FBI that confirms the existence of a CIA file on Chomsky.

Dated June 8, 1970, the memo discusses Chomsky’s anti-war activities and asks the FBI for more information about an upcoming trip by anti-war activists to North Vietnam. The memo’s author, a CIA official, says the trip has the “ENDORSEMENT OF NOAM CHOMSKY” and requests “ANY INFORMATION” about the people associated with the trip…

The evidence also substantiates the fact that Chomsky’s file was tampered with, says Theoharis. “The CIA’s response to the FOIA requests that it has no file on Chomsky confirms that its Chomsky file was destroyed at an unknown time,” he said.

Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes, when an arch-leftist ideologue who dreams of a 1984-style totalitarian socialist government risks facing possible 1984-style wrath and Orwellian memory hole manipulation of an increasingly totalitarian socialist government.

The really fun part here is had this come out during the Bush or Reagan terms, we would have had weeks on end of media coverage on how this shows America has turned into a Police State.

But coming out now, all it's going to do is give the left another thing to cleave with the Democratic Party loyalists over, as with the Snowden case in general. The longtime Chomskyites who've been waiting for this moment (Chompskying at the bit, so to speak) to wail loudly about the evil of the U.S, government will be met by Obama's Praetorian Guard within the vast majority of the big media. They would have loved to have run with this story in, say, 2007, but now, coming on top of Team Obama's current NSA woes, it's not a story that fits the narrative, and as a result will be ignored in the way the media buries those "Gun owner shoots intruder" stories because they threaten the desired outcome.
