“State of Kansas wants sperm donor found on Craigslist to pay for daughter born to lesbian couple,” the Topeka Capital-Journal reports. What’s the matter with Kansas — specifically, its Department for Children and Families?
Topekan William Marotta sought only to become a sperm donor — but now the state of Kansas is trying to have him declared a father.
Nearly four years ago, Marotta donated sperm in a plastic cup to a lesbian couple after responding to an ad they had placed on Craigslist.
Marotta and the women, Topekans Angela Bauer and Jennifer Schreiner, signed an agreement holding him harmless for support of the child, a daughter Schreiner bore after being artificially inseminated.
But the Kansas Department for Children and Families is now trying to have Marotta declared the 3-year-old girl’s father and forced to pay child support. The case is scheduled for a Jan. 8 hearing in Shawnee County District Court.
Hannah Schroller, the attorney defending Marotta, said the case has intriguing social and reproductive rights implications.
Via Instapundit, who also quotes an email from a retired attorney who says, “this case is every reason I got out of private and public law practice once we had children of our own. These idiot parents who have children as some kind of status thing, and then delegate them to pawn in their continuing battle with immaturity or responsibility.”

CNN would stand with whatever would get more statist a**holes elected, as usual.
Perhaps holding him legally responsible is unfair, but on the other hand it seems to me that there is a certain rough justice in a “benevolent” idiot reaping what he has sown.
The solution is simple. Gays want equal status, let ‘em have it, good and hard. Declare the non-childbearing lesbian in this case, Angela Bauer, the spouse lifetime-responsible for child support.
William Marotta should not be liable for anything. In the language of abortion advocates, all he did was discard a non-viable t/i/s/s/u/e fluid. “Reproductive equal rights” cuts both ways, ladies. Sauce. Goose.
I’m with Levans, with the exception of the child there’s no innocents involved here, including Marotta’s wife who went along with the immoral charade.
With the growing dependence on the welfare state, I’m honestly surprised this doesn’t happen more often.
