Observation Can Become an Intervention — The Reverse Is Also True
“Obama’s Other Race Speech,” as Matt Drudge describes it, is now online at the Daily Caller. In response, at the Tatler, Bryan Preston writes, “Simply put, Barack Obama was and still is Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s most studious and successful disciple.”
And if you missed it on Fox News earlier tonight, clips of Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity’s discussion of the above video are now online at YouTube.
Regarding the media’s attempt at “BenSmithing” the above video (as John Nolte would say), Andrew Ferguson’s “Press Man” back page column at Commentary seems prescient. Ferguson’s column is always my first read when the new issue arrives each month. I believe his newest column is currently behind the subscriber paywall, but he makes a great observation in the excerpt below, beginning with a riff on the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle:
Heisenberg’s principle can be crudely generalized (it’s the best I can do) as follows: An observer can change the nature of a thing or an event merely through the act of observation. Observation all by itself can become an intervention. Heisenberg was describing how reality works at the level of quantum mechanics, where a wave becomes a particle and vice versa depending on how it’s being measured. But it applies, too, at the level of political journalism, where reality is even stranger. There, facts can become interpretations, interpretations can become facts, and events of no significance can achieve an earthshaking importance simply by virtue of being pawed over by a large number of journalists.
A typical journalist, if he’s any good, insists at least theoretically on the iron divide between observer and participant. At its best the press corps sees itself as a squadron of Red Cross workers, wandering among the combatants in a battle zone and ensuring their own safety with a claim of strict neutrality. The Heisenberg Principle of Journalism puts the lie to all that. You see it at work whenever a news anchor announces that “this story just refuses to go away” or a headline writer insists that “questions continue to be raised” about the conduct of one hapless public figure or another.
The story refuses to go away, of course, because the anchor and his colleagues won’t let it; and the questions that continue to be raised are being raised by the headline writer and his editors. Reporters create more news than anybody, just by pretending they’re watching it unfold.
And the reverse is true as well:
- A presidential candidate calls for bankrupting an entire industry? Let’s ignore it in plain sight.
- A presidential candidate calls for higher energy prices for all Americans, especially the poor? Capital idea, we agree! But on the whole, let’s ignore it in plain sight.
- A presidential candidate has spent years marinating in a radical chic background? Let’s ignore it in plain sight.
- The Middle East is in tatters as a result of an administration asleep at the wheel? Let’s ignore it in plain sight.
- A border agent killed and guns in the hands of Mexican criminals? Let’s ignore it in plain sight.
- An incendiary racially charged speech involving the man who is now the president of the United States emerges that 99 percent of the general public hasn’t seen? Old news. Let’s ignore it in plain sight.
For decades, the establishment media has been in the tank for the left — to the point where Bill Clinton was paraphrased by the Washington Post in 2006 as saying, “There is an expectation among Democrats that establishment old media organizations are de facto allies.”
Or to put it another way, as the Washington Examiner notes tonight in an editorial, “To believe Obama is to forget the last four years.” That’s what both the Obama administration and their palace guard are hoping.
But both halves of the equation used to be better at going through the motions of pretending about the nation’s welfare.
Update: “Hannity Does Devastating Side-By-Side Comparison Of Obama’s Two Race Speeches.”
And Glenn Reynolds notes:
SO IN RESPONSE TO THE NEW OBAMA VIDEO DROP, one establishment political journalist tells me it’s no big deal because everyone knows Obama’s a big lefty, talks blacker when with black audiences, etc., etc.
But the thing is, in 2004-2008, Obama sold himself as a black guy who wasn’t in the mold of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. So when he sounds like that, it’s a contradiction. You know, the kind of hypocrisy the press usually goes after in politicians. Unless, as with Obama, the press is trying to drag them across the finish line. Because there’s no way they’re going to let Obama be a one-termer, when the hated W got two. . . .
Old news — “except for new parts media edited out,” Twitchy adds.

Or to put it another way, as the Washington Examiner notes tonight in an editorial, “To believe Obama is to forget the last four years.”
To believe Obama any longer one must close the eyes of his mind and keep them shut by force.
To believe Obama one must keep one’s head in an extremely stinky place.
You with your PJM blogin’
You skeptics always contemplatin’
How my coronation you’d like to start rearrangin’
When that’s not what you really should do
When heaven has found your children and you
Can’t you see
That it’s all wrapped up in the Messiah that’s Me
So follow Me
Come on, children
Follow Me
I’m Obama the Piper
And I’ll show you where Hope and Change is at
Come on, children
Can’t you see
I’m Obama the Piper
Trust in Me
Children
Don’t be worried about your parents payin’ big bucks to help Me move and grove
Hey, children
What do you think I’m tryin’ to prove
It ain’t true
That My Michelle would like to punch and rob your dumb hysterical parents and you
It’s just in your mind
And that’s all that’s trickin’ you
So behind all My Media Minions step in line
Come on, children
Turn on your evil racist parents for Me
Come on, children
Trust in My Teleprompter and My Pills and My Candy and Me
Come on, children
Can’t you see
Come on, children
Follow Me
Dude.
VERY NICE BARRY:
Let’s get a little show going here:
HE FAILS, HE FALLS, HE KNOWS HE’S TOAST, YET DEFIANT TO THE END, HE PLAYS WITH THE “STARS” AND HIS “LATE NIGHT WHORES”, AND…
“THEY CALL BARACK , PARIAH”
[To the tune of “They Call the Wind Mariah”]
Pariah,
Pariah,
They call “THE WON” Pariah
In DMV* they got a name,
For Liar, Dolt and Loser.
The Liar’s Reid, the Dolt is Joe,
And the Loser’s called “Pariah”
Pariah blows his Choom** around,
And makes the Kool-Aid stronger,
But fewer minions can be found,
They can’t trust him any longer.
Pariah,
Pariah,
They call “THE WON” Pariah.
When crowds first heard Pariah speak,
Some swooned like rock star groupies.
But now, the “Man of Steel” is weak,
And his “fans” are simply loopy.
Our seniors lost, their heritage sold,
Our children’s birthright squandered,
His “Hope and Change” were just fools’ gold,
How far from truth we’ve wandered!
Pariah,
Pariah,
They call “THE WON” Pariah.
And in the East, they burn our flags,
Our embassies are shattered,
An envoy and soldiers in body bags–
Our very Liberties battered!
The Media Whores cry: “All is well”
“THE WON” was never stronger!
But our “lying eyes” say, “This is hell—
AND WE WON’T TAKE IT ANY LONGER!
Pariah,
Pariah,
They call “THE WON” Pariah.
*District – Maryland – Virginia =”DMV”
** “Choom”, both a noun (marijuana) and a verb “to smoke marijuana”

There are no opponents to Obama in America except a bunch of vastly outnumbered racists. Obama can not lose the election! Never! No, fellow Democrats I am not scared of losing and neither should you be!
Search for the truth. I tell you things and I always ask you to verify what I say. I told you yesterday that there are no dissatisfied people in America. You can go and visit any state at all. No dissatisfied person there. No one at all. There are only supporters of Barack Obama except for a few crazy constitution clingers. Everything is okay.
By Obama, I think Obama will win in a 57 state landslide. Any talk of his defeat is merely an insane prattle. The fact is that as soon as Obama’s opponents reach the voting booths, we will besiege them and slaughter them. Wherever Obama’s opponents go in the New Socialist Worker’s America they will find themselves encircled by billions of Obama supporters. The Tea Partiers will be burnt. We are going to tackle them. We are going to hit them with shoes! Obama’s opponents are already committing suicide by the thousands as they realize that Obama can not lose.
Precisely because they are not government owned, the Media’s ability to define political reality for the majority of Americans is unaffected by temporary electoral victories, such as conservative enjoyed in 2010. They wield that power in a more and more purely partisan fashion, effectively covering up (by refusing to report) any Democrat errors or corruption, even as they magnify identical or lesser malfeasances into paralyzing “-Gate” scandals requiring special prosecutors and endless investigation.
What can conservative do to undermine or call to account this power? The Media has become a huge force multiplier for the Democrat Party, whether in power or seeking to block elected Republican presidents. What can be done?
Once upon a time, I studied Journalism at my local JC. Our professor pointed out what our ethical responsibility was in the class-to report the truth. Find the facts, confirm the facts, report the truth. If the facts lead you to a different spot, it doesn’t matter. Your responsibility is to the Truth. That the Mainstream Media, (presumably) educated at some of the best universities in the United States, have lower ethics than a bunch of barely-out-of-high-school kids at a JC is a very, very scary thing.
Everything that the media isn’t reporting, everything they are ignoring because they have an Agenda is a failure on their part. I’d point out their hypocrisy, but they wouldn’t notice or care.
Your Uncertainty Principle analogy is perfect, as also its obverse is equally as true in physics as in news reporting: If we don’t measure, we’ll know neither position nor momentum (of a particle). So, without measurement, no definable phenomenon. No particle, no wave, to see, but a beautiful light-show nobody understands but everyone likes. Magic.
Applies to in-the-tank OldMedia and Obama. The meme: We want this guy, doesn’t matter what he says or does, nor do our reasons matter. “He’s cool” is as good a reason as any, if there has to be one, but it really doesn’t matter because nobody understands it or cares, because he “gives us nice stuff”, like “tingle down leg”, “free cellphone”, you name it. So we’ll simply not measure (report) anything that could contradict the narrative “nice”. Then that was never there, didn’t happen, except the nice narrative which is always there. Magic.
Happy sponsors. Happy editors. Happy candidate. Everyone’s happy, a total win-win, except for those who bought “the paper” for info, or the candidate for four years of good governance. – “We want to know his position.” – “Tell us his fast and furious velocity.” – “Really, you Rubes?” – “Go take a powder!” Tragic.
The arrogance is astounding: Everybody who THEY say counts is kept happy. The buyer doesn’t count; nor does the voter.
The big question is: Will American voters fall for this again? Or make their own measurements, do their own sums, this time? As they’ll have to. Just remember: In a Republic, your vote counts, so make it count. In a Mobocracy, your Count counts (on) your votes, so don’t let him.
I think the heisenberg uncertainty principle you are referring to is incorrectly used here. The Copenhagen interpretation of the schrodingers cat paradox describes the observer-makes-reality phenom. Heisenberg was on about how you can’t simultaneously know the position and vector of an electron.
I’m just quoting Andrew Ferguson of Commentary. I didn’t build this analogy.
Ferguson should avoid comments on physics. The statement “where a wave becomes a particle and vice versa depending on how it’s being measured” is wrong. Samuel Gladstone put it this way: “these things are neither particles nor waves, but are more abstract entities that sometimes behave as either”. They don’t change their nature in response to how they are being measured. The problem for us is that we have nothing in our sense experience to compare them to. Heisenberg’s analysis proceeded from the fact that measurement by its nature is a process of interference and that at the subatomic level there are limits to how prcisely we can measure certain combinations of variables. On a practical level, you wouldn’t expect an accurate measurement of the temperature of water in a glass with a thermometer that was close to the size of the glass. What this has to do with journalism escapes me…unless you are talking about how “the narrative” can change public perception of what the facts are. But this has nothing to do with measurement.
The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle says, simply, that given two non-commuting self-adjoint operators on some (Banach) space the product of the uncertainties in their observables is finite, being at least Planck’s constant divided by 4 pi. It has nothing to do with the observer effect.
At the time of 9/11 I was a graduate student growing increasingly disgusted by all the leftist seminar crap that one had to endure to bow and scrape one’s way to completion. I went in a liberal, I became a doubter, and I left a rock-ribbed conservative. It took 9/11 to awaken me to the fact that The Media was wholly owned by the Left and that the Left was a mouthpiece of the New Democratic Party (or was it vice versa?). Anyway, it was all a shocking revelation to me. I was but a rapidly aging graduate assistant. Teaching to classes of 300 students, while the tenured faculty was off … doing brilliant work of one sort or another.
Well, the good news is that I was awakened to the reality of the omissive treachery of the agents that we rely upon to keep us informed. I learned that the treachery was based, for the most part, on what The Media chose to keep from us. So I changed sides, with gusto.
The bad news is that I also came to learn the the GOP is over-run with enablers to the MSM. I found out that my new political home was saddle-bagged by gutless wimps like John Boehner and Mitch McConnell and a whole host of other Washington trough grazers with the GOP brand on their fat asses.
So it looks like we’ve got double the work cut out for us to turn this nation away from the economic and national-security cliff that the current crop has us blindly galloping towards.
Even so, I refuse to accept that We The People are licked. I remember 2010.
Dr. Frank, Great analysis of the Republicans. Definitely not the answer to our problems, only orders of magnitude better than the other.
“Well, sure, the government lies. And the newspapers lie. But in a democracy, they aren’t the same lies.
– Alexis A. Gilliland
The biggest revelation, no confirmation, of the video is what a complete and total phony Obama is. Anyone who watches even a little bit can’t escape that fact unless they want to deny undeniable proof, which many will do.
So Obama believes exactly what he was taught; exactly what the Left has said about AmeriKKKa since Levittown was built; exactly what Cleaver, X, Wright, Sharpton, et. al. taught. No surprises here. Move on.org. No matter what villainy spews from this great orator, Obama has a chance of being re-elected because generations of Leftists have succeed in their goal of wrecking America.
Let’s see:
• whipping up racial hatred
• charges of economic crimes and oppression
• charges of racial conspiracy against the deserving race
• belief in the all-powerful state
• charismatic leader
I told you Nazis were Leftists. The right believes in freedom to the left are increasing levels of statism until one reaches Obamunism, Maoism, Stalinism, and Nazism.
Of all the Barack Obama video out there, this is probably the most significant clip to a majority of Americans…
We need to remind voters of this. Mitt Romney needs to do that tonight.
All I could through that video was shake my head and wonder how this charlatan was able to get elected. Everything this man says and does is absurdly wrong and outright deceitful.
“Ignoring in plain sight” is the hallmark of Runaway Jurynalism. Also known as Journullification. You collect all the facts and evidence…and then ignore it and conclude as you wanted to in the first place.
If you can’t persuade based upon the mere nullification of facts and evidence, you are then free to forge documents and say the forgery represents what the truth “should have been”. Truthyness.
You may also edit out key words in an audio tape, fuzzy up the picture on a videotape, photoshop still pictures, stage Green Helmeted guys, omit key questions, redact key answers, hold tapes hostage, form a group of 400+ and trade thoughts on how to conspire to “capture” just the right information.
