“Patterico Criticizes Google; Gets Locked Out of Gmail:”
That’s just what happened to the four other people who criticized Google or nitecruzr.
They want me to provide a cell phone number. That’s what Aaron, and Hoystory, and Dead Dog Bounce, and EnigmatiCore all did. Me, I went and left a support ticket with a different e-mail address, because I wasn’t thrilled about giving them a cell phone number. I have not heard back yet.
AdvertisementI rely on Gmail, so I’ll probably hand over the cell phone number if necessary. But I don’t like it. And I would strongly advise people who don’t already rely on Gmail to explore different options.
Since I am locked out of my Google account, I also cannot access Google Reader:

I am convinced that Google has given this fellow nitecruzr the authority to flag accounts and require them to hand over cell phone numbers. (And if, instead, they are just asking for cell phone numbers wholesale, that’s a concern as well.)
Google, do something about this clown. GIve me back my Gmail without making me give you more personal information of mine.
In short: don’t be evil, Google.
Or hey, at least when you’re done, restore Althouse’s archives.

Interesting … I didn’t criticize Google, but I did bypass the “opportunity” to provide a contact number when Blogger asked for it.
Shortly thereafter, my B2B blog administrative functions became and remained inaccessible for 24 hours or so. When functionality was restored, the most recent post was gone and one or two scheduled posts had disappeared (even though final versions had been saved and were in the queue to be published).
Perhaps Google is practicing a little electronic shock therapy? It asks. You must comply. Otherwise, you get zapped.
What happens if you don’t have a cell phone?
Why do you depend on google? you have your own mailbox at home so you dont depend on the mailboxrus place, right?
As well as gmail, I have my own mail server that i use for more personal email. It costs me 10 dollars a month but i like to play with servers anyhow.
I started moving away from google email about the time that ads started to appear in my web mail side bars related to the subject of the emails. I prefer private communication to be private.
that being said i put down my google email in the ‘mail (will not be published)(required)’ blank. DOnt want my private email spread around.
