Google Blacklists Althouse Blog?

May 13, 2011 - 2:16 pm - by Ed Driscoll

I’ll be back to blogging here in just a bit, but in the meantime, I just wanted to point out this latest insanity from the self-proclaimed “Don’t be evil” folks at Google. Yet another reminder why I’m glad I quit Google-owned Blogspot.com seven years ago.

Update: Ann has resumed blogging on her backup blog (also on Blogspot, alas); meanwhile, the moderator of the “Help” thread at Google, whom as I understand from some of the comments on Ann’s blog is not a Google employee, but is certainly acting as their surrogate, is taunting her, and her readers.

That seems remarkably stupid. In and of itself it may not be evil, but it’s certainly banal.

Update: Understatement of the year: “Google is not helping itself today.”

Incidentally, Ann’s original blog is back online, but as of the moment, sans its years of content. Hopefully Google can repopulate that material.

ALL Blogger blogs have been affected by an outage of some kind yesterday and today. Yesterday, you could view the blogs, but bloggers were unable to access their control panels to post. Today, mine are back up, hers does not seem to be back up yet – there is an error message. All Blogger blogs seemed to have the error message right before they were restored.

Could be the problem – then again…. maybe they are evil….

Wow! Though, just wow. Nitecruzr is usually one of the most helpful on their support threads – this is bizarre. The tone is not good – and it is bordering on shocking. If they are talking to Ann that way, none of us have a chance.

This is obviously another glitch in whatever they have been working out – so taking that confrontive tach with Ann rather than saying let’s figure out what went wrong here is really surprising.

the way I’ve been looking at it is I remind myself how grateful I am for this wonderful, and ever-improving, FREE platform. I know that they suffered much anxiety and frustration trying to solve this, and all I really want to say to them is THANK YOU – for the space, for the improvements (when I first started you’d lose every third post as you hit publish – AND you had to learn html) and for the hard work solving these issues and setting up the upgrades.

I wish there was some way to actually get to talk to a PERSON sometimes, but I realize the sheer numbers make that impossible.

AND, I am going to reinstate my back up blog on WordPress. Just in case.

  3. It appears to me that someone is going by his utter ignorance of Anne Althouse, and so has made certain assumptions regarding Anne as a person, and as a blogger. This goes on long enough we could see Google paying a hefty fine for their behavior.

My B2B blog has been down, as reported above. It reappeared late today, but one recent post and the next scheduled post were gone. Everything else seems intact.

I was able to recreate the missing content with relative ease, since I maintain a complete backup of all posts. Meanwhile, the lack of Google professionalism regarding Althouse is prompting reconsideration.

  5. This is one reason I use WordPress. :)
