As Caroline May writes at the Daily Caller, “NOW defends Palin against Maher attack, but says ‘We are on to you, right-wingers’:”
In the wake of Bill Maher’s tasteless slur against Sarah Palin Friday night, in which he called the former Alaska governor a “twat,” the National Organization for Woman (NOW) has not only denounced the use of such sexist words, but also issued a warning to conservatives who they believe are attempting to use the issue to discredit their organization: “We are on to you, right-wingers.”
“Listen, supposedly progressive men (ok, and women, too): Cut the crap! Stop degrading women with whom you disagree and/or don’t like by using female body terms or other gender-associated slurs,” Lisa Bennett, NOW communications director wrote in a statement.
AdvertisementIn addition to chastising men (and women) like Maher who use their position as progressives as a shield against charges of sexism, NOW made it clear that their denouncement of Maher’s sexist remark toward Palin is in no way an endorsement of her or conservative policies.
“You’re trying to take up our time getting us to defend your friend Sarah Palin. If you keep us busy defending her, we have less time to defend women’s bodies from the onslaught of reproductive rights attacks and other threats to our freedom, safety, livelihood, etc,” wrote Bennett. “Sorry, but we can’t defend Palin or even Hillary Clinton from every sexist insult hurled at them in the media. That task would be impossible, and it would consume us. You know this would not be a productive way to fight for women’s equal rights, which is why you want us stuck in this morass.”
NOW’s reactionary bumper-sticker worldview can be summed up thusly:

They are POed about Palin have Trig. They despise her for it.
Whenever I try to point out that N.O.W. is a sexist, PC, bigoted organization that does as much harm as good I get (an approximation) of this:
“But, they have done so much good. Look at x, y, and z”
My response is simple, but I think it’s apt:
If my cousin is analagous to Mother Theresa M-F, but is a bigotted snake in the grass, but ONLY on the weekends, does that excuse his behavior?
No. It does not. It may MITIGATE it, but not excuse it.
N.O.W. has been anti-traditional family, anti-male (of a certainty), for excusing all sorts of vile behavior when it’s done by a woman, and out-and-out a left wing organization (versus for the betterment of women primarily) for a LONG time.
Thank God an organization like the IWF came along.
I generally believe women should have the same rights as men to equal pay (for equal work and qualification) and to be treated fairly under the law. That makes me a feminist, I suppose.
But NOW abandoned that cause about the time I was born several decades ago. Today NOW is a shill for the liberal extremists and the abortion industry.
I say that with total confidence, because if NOW really cared about women leading lives free from male violence, objectification and other unpleansantness, they would be beating the drum every day to stop the violent rap/hip-hop lyrics that make women the violent targets of abuse and harrassment. But I have never heard NOW take this stand. Not once, and certianly not every day as needed.
Why?
Could it be that most hip-hop “artists” are perceived as being in the liberal camp? That would be my guess.
I would think that if someone perceived to be a conservative (like a country music singer) had a big-selling single talking about beating up his $itches or his #0s, then we would hear lots of talk about how NOW needed to silence this music to protect women.
Palin threatens NOW because there are FAR MORE women in America who are conservative like SP than there are liberals like the NOW crowd. And SP, for all her faults, has awakened a political interest in those same mainstream women that dwarfs the miniscule membership of the tired liberal NOW crowd…er clique.
Sarah, I know it hurts to be called ugly names. But keep on doing what you are doing. It drives the liberals insane.
