Ah, the things we can learn from the Cassandra-like ladies of The View, Barbara Walter’s ultimate legacy as a veteran journalist at ABC (well, other than sharing Martinis and hors d’oeuvres with the Black Panthers and Leonard & Felicia Bernstein back in 1970). Former co-hostess Rosie O’Donnell gave us all the decade’s most memorable lesson in physics; Joy Behar has been a one-woman educational tour de force.
And then there’s Whoopi Goldberg, who invariably “secedes” where lesser on-air personalities fail.
Last year during the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11, we learned that Whoopi Goldberg isn’t sure if man landed on the moon. Or as Jim Treacher tweeted, “Whoopi knows the moon landings were faked. After all, she and Picard never really went into space either.”
This week we learned from Whoopi that Imperial Japan didn’t bomb Pearl Harbor:
O’REILLY: I’m not painting all Muslims with one brush.
GOLDBERG: But when you say Muslims killed us, when you don’t specify. It’s like saying whenever I see black men coming down the street, I’m scared. That’s the same —
O’REILLY: Do you have a problem in history when you were taught about World War II that Japanese attacked us? Do you have a problem with that?
GOLDBERG: I have a problem with that.
O’REILLY: Do you?
GOLDBERG: Yes.
O’REILLY: But they attacked us?
GOLDBERG: The Japanese —
O’REILLY: Attacked us.
GOLDBERG: — army attacked us.
O’REILLY: The air force did.
GOLDBERG: Sorry, the air force did. You understand my point?

Understand your point? The Japanese air force attacked us on December 7, 1941, NOT the Japanese?
Goldberg apparently has “a problem” saying it was the Japanese because all of that nation’s people weren’t on the planes that morning!
To be fair though, she’s at least one up on fellow Pearl Harbor truther John Cougar Mellencamp when it comes to almost understanding who attacked us on December 7th, 1941. But Whoopi wants to have it both ways — here’s a clip of her on The View from 2007, comparing America, as was the fad of many punitive liberals during the previous decade prior to January of 2009, to Nazi Germany.
But if “Japan” didn’t attack us at Pearl Harbor, merely its “air force,” how can there be, from Whoopi’s point of a view, a “Nazi” Germany? Taking Whoopi’s perspective to its absurdist conclusion, to paraphrase Jerry Ford’s legendary gaffe, it was a nation of 80 million free and autonomous people, a few dozen crazed fanatics, and a couple of rogue army divisions.
Which brings us back to the common-sense point that Bill O’Reilly made, which put the knickers of Whoopi, Joy, and ultimately, NPR CEO Vivian Schiller into a twist last month.
And speaking of which, after the incident a year ago involving Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, whom Mark Steyn memorably dubbed “the pantybomber,” the gay liberals at the pro-Hillary Clinton Hillbuzz Website wrote a blog post that, in retrospect, sounds like a tougher first draft of O’Reilly’s comments (via 5’F):
And, yes, every Muslim is indeed complicit in all of this since Muslims worldwide do not stand up and fight the terrorists in their midst. Instead, they take to the airwaves demanding “understanding of Islam” and repeatedly say, “This is not Islam!” whenever Muslims murder people, or attempt to blow them into millions of pieces. Well, for several decades now we’ve heard “This is not Islam!” and we’re still waiting to see WHAT Islam is then.
Sure looks like a bunch of murdering lunatics hellbent on destroying the West to us.
We maintain this should not even be considered a religion, but should be treated like the National Socialist Party in Germany. In the 40s, if Germans had tried to blow up airplanes, no one would be crying about needing to understand Germany or Nazism. “This is not Nazi Germany!” would not be a valid defense for murderous sabotage.
As her conversation with O’Reilly highlights, Whoopi Goldberg wants to say that there was no nationalized Imperial Japan 60 years ago, but she’ll still redline the Godwin meter from time to time to attack America. At least depending upon who’s in the White House at the time. It’s the sort of comparison that she and her fellow members of the far left might well start making again on a regular basis, beginning as early January of 2013.
