In 2008, America Swallowed the Lie, but it did not Forget
In a new post on the PJM homepage, Roger L. Simon proffers his take on why President Obama is flailing and failing:
There have been plenty of presidents with limited abilities off the cuff. I think it is because Obama was elected on a lie, a big one that was enabled by the mainstream media, and that by the time he was in office he had spent his credit. Belief was gone. Everyone knew he was a liar, including many liberals, even if they wouldn’t admit it to themselves and even if they had colluded with him in the lie.
I am speaking, alas again, of the Reverend Wright affair. I thought it was serious at the time. In retrospect, I think it was disastrous, probably fatal.
Barack Obama told us on several occasions then that he had not been aware of Wright’s extreme black nationalist views during the candidate’s twenty years in the reverend’s church. That made no sense, since Obama had dedicated his book to Wright, had his children baptized by him, etc. Also, Wright’s separatist brand of black liberation theology was no doubt quite familiar to Obama. It had been to many of us for decades.
Yet the mainstream media paid little attention, or tried not to, certainly did not deign to investigate in any depth. Indeed they went so far that many of them declared Obama’s attendant speech on race a masterpiece of the MLKing sort, when it was no more than an assemblage of clichés and mendacious clichés at that, since they covered up the obvious uncomfortable truth that the candidate knew all about Wright and, unlike Oprah Winfrey who left the Trinity Church years before, chose to ignore it for reasons he could or would not be honest about.
So we were lied to about this by Obama and the MSM winked. Yet it was a far more significant lie than Clinton’s proclamations about Monica Lewinsky, which only peripherally affected affairs of state and were obviously the desperate acts of a man caught cheating. Obama’s prevarication was about the very essence of his political views. Widely desirous of electing its first black president — I felt this myself but did not act upon it — the nation gulped and swallowed the lie, but, consciously or unconsciously, it did not forget.
Now we are where we are. We have a president that no one wants to listen to because we do not fully believe him. His own party is deserting him not just because they know his ideas are unpopular. They also know he is unable to convince anyone. We have shut him off.
And now the revelations of J. Christian Adams have shown that his Department of Justice has a racial bias not entirely dissimilar to those of Reverend Wright. Again the MSM is doing its best to ignore this, but the damage is still there and growing and Obama will not be able, this time, to make a speech in his defense.
It’s over. For all the excitement of his election, having lied his way into office, Barack Obama was essentially DOA his first night at the White House.
Speaking of Rev. Wright, the above clip from May of 2008 represents the moment when CNN decided that doing everything it can to elect Obama to the presidency was worth sacrificing its credibility, perhaps permanently. For the rest of the MSM, it will be quite interesting to watch how they covers events this fall and (especially) in 2012. Expect the starboard half of the Blogosphere to not let them forget their performance in 2008.

It’s time to face up to the fact that Jeremiah Wright’s violent, racist, hate-filled “G-d Damn America” is a mindset deeply held, widely shared, and is Barack Obama’s guiding principle.
The media disgraced themselves in ’08…I am old enough to remember the 1960 election when the media at least pretended neutrality between Nixon and Kennedy…no such pretense exists anymore.
When you turn on ABCBSNBCNN or read the NYTIMES and WaPo you know what you are getting…propaganda the likes of which would have embarrassed Pravada.
What truly amazes is what they ignore…the voter intimidation story coming out of Philly has new legs with the lead attorney coming forward…how can they not cover this? The media taught be to believe that whistle blowing was good…I guess it depends on which whistle blower.
Rev. Wright is a racist idiot. Sad that so many people find strength and comfort in his racist views. They, of course, are racists, too, even if they do not admit it.
Obama’s entire campaign was a big lie, the Jeremiah Wright affaire was just one part of that big lie. The big lie was that Obama loved America, was a moderate, that he wanted transparency in government, that he opposed tax increases on 95% of Americans, that he would oppose unnecessary government spending. Obama said he’d go thru the budget line by line and eliminate the unneeded spending.
And I disagree with Roger, if somehow his policies worked, people wouldn’t care about the Big Lie of a campaign. I learned that from Bill Clinton. Clinton campaigned on a “Middle Class Tax Cut” and within weeks of taking office, he told Americans: “I worked as hard as I’ve ever worked in my life, but I can’t find a way to make the Middle Class Tax Cut.” I thought then, there goes Clinton’s re-election. After electing the GOP to control Congress, Clinton was then forced to tack right and signed Welfare Reform.
Clinton’s big lie didn’t matter.
Why, I wonder, even now, would Simon state that Obama “chose to ignore it [him?]” about Obama’s faithful apprenticeship? Pretty clear he didn’t ignore anything. He soaked up every tender juicy morsel.
