More from Steyn on the ObamaCare paloooza we’re witnessing today:
Well, it seems to be in the bag now. I try to be a sunny the-glass-is-one-sixteenth-full kinda guy, but it’s hard to overestimate the magnitude of what the Democrats have accomplished. Whatever is in the bill is an intermediate stage: As the graph posted earlier shows, the governmentalization of health care will accelerate, private insurers will no longer be free to be “insurers” in any meaningful sense of that term (ie, evaluators of risk), and once that’s clear we’ll be on the fast track to Obama’s desired destination of single payer as a fait accomplis.
If Barack Obama does nothing else in his term in office, this will make him one of the most consequential presidents in history. It’s a huge transformative event in Americans’ view of themselves and of the role of government. You can say, oh, well, the polls show most people opposed to it, but, if that mattered, the Dems wouldn’t be doing what they’re doing. Their bet is that it can’t be undone, and that over time, as I’ve been saying for years now, governmentalized health care not only changes the relationship of the citizen to the state but the very character of the people. As I wrote in NR recently, there’s plenty of evidence to support that from Britain, Canada and elsewhere.
AdvertisementMore prosaically, it’s also unaffordable. That’s why one of the first things that middle-rank powers abandon once they go down this road is a global military capability. If you take the view that the US is an imperialist aggressor, congratulations: You can cease worrying. But, if you think that America has been the ultimate guarantor of the post-war global order, it’s less cheery. Five years from now, just as in Canada and Europe two generations ago, we’ll be getting used to announcements of defense cuts to prop up the unsustainable costs of big government at home. And, as the superpower retrenches, America’s enemies will be quick to scent opportunity.
Longer wait times, fewer doctors, more bureaucracy, massive IRS expansion, explosive debt, the end of the Pax Americana, and global Armageddon. Must try to look on the bright side…
I watched a few minutes of Pelosi crossing the street to get to Congress, with an enormous symbolic gavel in hand, apparently trying to recreate the spirit of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Which is Orwellian on a host of levels: The original goal of the civil rights movement was to provide equal freedoms for all Americans; ObamaCare, once it reaches its full Hindenburg/Teddy Kennedy proportions, will take plenty of freedoms away. And it’s also a reminder that for the far left, history began in the 1960s.
On the other hand, Steve Green and Glenn Reynolds each note this issue isn’t over by a long shot today.
Still though, in the meantime, as Mark suggests above:

Filthy statists.
Crush them in November. Pulverize what’s left in 2012.
Here is Bart Stupak’s challenger, Dr. Dan Benishek’s Facebook page, which is currently exploding:

More from Mark Steyn, albeit a slightly older vintage than his offering at the top of this column: http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/03/18/your-%E2%80%98downturn%E2%80%99-their-%E2%80%98upturn%E2%80%99/
What this marks, really, is the no turning back for “White Socialism.” Do the math. There is NOT ENOUGH MONEY, even with no defense budget at all, no real FBI, the US depending on the good graces and mercy of China, Iran, Russia, and India. There is not enough money to pay for health care.
So someone will have to be in the back of the line. The back of the bus. The loser. Loser in Health Care. Loser in who gets to Medical School. [There are racial quotas and set-asides mandating basically such low standards that even Black and Hispanic students can be admitted and passed through Medical School.] Loser in Student Loans. [Government takes over Student Loans and determines who gets them, and lets be honest we know it will be White students who lose.]
There is no turning back, and Whites are not simply going to wither away in the “end of Whiteness” that Harold Myerson called for in the Washington Post.
What matters now, is who controls the Government to determine who wins, and who loses, in everything. EVERYTHING. So that means basically “White Socialism.” I.E. a determination to maintain demographic dominance and vote themselves first in line, first in the bus.
You can’t turn this back. America is not Finland, or the UK in the 1950′s, or Japan, or Sweden. SOMEONE is going to lose and be in the back of the bus, back of the line.
After all, every White woman in America could get free, bi-annual breast cancer and ovarian cancer screening and unlimited treatment, with no tax raises. And all it takes is kicking out all the illegal aliens and those who might be so. THAT will occur to many, and no one cares post-Rev. Wright and Farrakhan about charges of “racism” when the issue is who gets health care and who does not.
I wrote this article on my blog on Sunday, before the vote on Obamacare.
I want my country back!
It seems like the ultra-liberals have been able to bribe and coerce enough congress-scumbags to pass the Obamacare. And as I said before, there would be hell to pay for this monstrosity. Obamacare is the very definition of unlimited government – the threat of which was forewarned by the Founding Fathers more than two centuries ago. The federal government, which is up to its neck in debt and unfunded liabilities, decided to launch the biggest entitlement of all times – the medical care for all. The spending on this new entitlement will surely dwarf many if not most of Federal programs and will make the bankruptcy of federal and state governments inevitable. The time of reckoning is at hand, brothers and sisters. Obamacare is the last breath of the liberal order – and it’s time to take America back from the party of thieves and looters.
All patriots of this nation must stand together and fight back. United we will win! There is no blue or red America anymore – there are only those that believe in America the beautiful, America the free, America the shining city on the hill – and those that believe in welfare socialism and government servitude. Today, we fight not only for our personal well-being – but for the dignity and honor of this country, for the right to look into the eyes of our children and say – we defended this nation from the perils of socialism. In November 2010, we will answer the crucial questions of our times – are American people worthy of the efforts of the Founding Fathers? Will American people have the right to proudly say “We are Americans” – or will they forever live in infamy and indignity of welfare socialism?
I am glad that the Democratic Party passed the Rubicon. From now on, there is no coming back for the liberal elites, no talks of compromise and middle-ground. Today, it is abundantly clear that we either will live in Obama’s America or America that our Founding Father envisioned. You cannot have both.
The November elections will be the most important elections in our lifetime. If you don’t vote for America in November – you don’t deserve to be called an American.
