In Victorian and Edwardian times, British constables (known as “bobbies” after Robert Peel) went armed only with nightsticks, while gentlemen and ladies both packed “equalizers” ready to deter attack in self-defense.

Through the 1920s, armed robberies and other weapons-related crimes in Britain verged close to zero– not only did self-defense provide radical disincentives to assault, but stringent anti-violence penalties discouraged law officers, perpetrators and potential victims alike from any resort to deadly force.

Only when police officers began to go armed, while courts explicitly banned citizens from defending persons-and-property regardless of provocation, did civil society begin its long slide to the unaccountable, brutal and lawless behavior we now witness every day. Armed burglars invade a household; the victim grabs their weapon and fires back– the smirking criminal goes free, while the beleagured householder faces prosecution on weapons charges as well as for violating his assailant’s civil rights.

PCBS to the contrary, there are simple standards of justice ignored by feckless Nanny Statists at their peril. Rule of Law is not a suicide pact. Those who push citizen disarmament at the expense of rational and effective self-defense will find themselves defenseless in the face of sheer survival instincts.

Arm all mature, non-felonious, sane citizens; disarm all civil peacekeepers pf any sort whatever; legislate severe penalties for unjustified armed force in any circumstances. Amazing how rapidly basic civility will reappear.

I own a gun for personal protection. Anyone who wants a gun can get one for personal protection. There is really no point to all the whining about our “disappearing” gun rights. Basic civility will reappear when we have equality in our society.
