Didn’t Dan Brown Write About This? The Atlantic asks, “Did Christianity Cause the Crash?” As Glenn Reynolds quips, “Well, I don’t think it explains Bernie Madoff.”
I blame the Stonecutters. And if they can’t be found, Father Coughlin.
On the other hand, to paraphrase John Lennon, Dodd is a concept, by which we measure our pain.

How about this one, and I <think this may have come from Peggy Noonan….
Did anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs cause the crash? The idea fascinates the hell out of me.
Think about it. The entire self-correcting mechanism of capitalism is based on individual, gut-level decisions of “this far and no farther”, investing “this much and no more”, “this particular investment just doesn’t ‘feel’ right”, “time to cut the losses, bail out, go forward”, whatever.
What if those decisions were adversely affected by chemicals? How many bankers/investors through history have spent a week of sleepless nights, and then decided “I gotta get out of this…” just for peace of mind?
And now many of these Wall Streeters couldn’t sleep nights because every fiber of their being, even subconscious ones, were screaming, “IT’S OUT OF CONTROL, IT’S GONNA COLLAPSE, GET OUT, CHANGE COURSE, DON’T DO THIS….!!!”
Ah, but that little green pill just made everything better. Now I can sleep at peace and let the money roll in…ahhhhh…. until the whole edifice came crashing down like a gotterdamerung.
It’s just a theory, but damned if I don’t think there might be something to it. I’d love someone to dig into it in a serious way.
Anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs are pharmaceutical solutions and can be called nothing else, while the prosperity gospel is far from being the mainstream of Christian thought. Therefore, I vote for the drugs. I also vote to have every national magazine that decides to blame Christianity for something instantly labeled as a cowardly publication on par with the Enquirer.
Maybe one day I could see a “Did Christianity cause (something negative or terrible)” article and consider it to be balanced due to the similar articles that have addressed Buddhists and poverty, Islam and violence, or Hinduism and athletes foot, but until I see some articles questioning the role of other religions (especially Islam) may play in causing the ills of the world articles like this amount to nothing more than hit pieces on an easy target. After all, the Atlantic knows damn well that there won’t be thousands of Sunday sermons promising paradise to whoever kills the editor and author of this article.
It’s a real shame, too. The Atlantic used to be well worth the cover price and even a subscription. When they fell into the propaganda only camp as opposed to the periodic propaganda camp, they became just another echo in the democrat Mountains of Failure.
