9/12 Attendance Issues Explored

September 13, 2009 - 5:20 pm - by Ed Driscoll

As of now, I’d say Dan Riehl has the definitive take on the number of attendees in DC yesterday, placing them into perspective with the number at President Obama’s inauguration in January:

Bottom line? It looks to me as if about as many people  who showed up to welcome Obama into the WH a mere 8 or so months ago showed up yesterday in a mood to throw him out.

Read the whole thing.

Riehl has the image wrong. The one he has for 9/12 simply can not be the right picture.

The 9/12 rally was directly in front of the Capitol steps on the west lawn. The stage was set up right in front of the steps.

A different event–which had large white tents set up which are clearly noticeable in the distance in many pictures that face away from the Capitol–was using the Mall, not the Tea Party. The Nation Black Family Reunion was taking place directly across from the Smithsonian Castle on the west end of that part of the mall (in front of the Washington Monument.)

Riehl’s picture shows the exact opposite: his picture has the stage on the mall, not on the Capitol lawn. His image has no one on the Capitol lawn, and the mall filled. His image shows no white tents near the Washington Monument.

The 9/12 tea party spilled down Penn avenue and Maryland avenue, not down the Mall.

There were tens of thousands there. Many, many tens of thousands.

There is something else that should not be ignored about the presidential inauguration attendees: in one way or another, some governmental entity or non-profit organization picked up the tab. I am just guessing—but it would not be a bit surprising if minimally 25% did not spend even a dime of their own money.

i listened to Tammy Bruce’s radio show this weekend, she was there in D.C.

She has much experience with rallies, and she knows what criteria are used to calculate and form an estimate of people who attend these kinds of assembly.

They use hotel occupancy figures as to occupancy just before and during the event, chartered buses for those forced to book a hotel in the suburbs, etc.

There is plenty of criteria to form an accurate estimate, and D.C. is capable of handling 1 to 2 million for an event like this, just as it did on inauguration day, and I’ll just bet those estimate figures, based on the criteria listed above are just about equal to those on inauguration day this year.
