This 1970 ad for ABC News seems to have been produced in the same vein as LBJ’s infamous Daisy Ad. I wonder how this played for TV viewers at the time, with only three networks, PBS, and a handful of local stations to choose from on their dial? I think I would want to run as far away as possible from anything that sounded like this, but unlike today’s demassified media, there were only two other choices available at the time for network news:

  1. There was only one choice: Huntley Brinkley. They owned the timeslot. ABC was what I watched when I accidently failed to change the channel. I don’t recall actually watching Walter Cronkite until the week he left

    “We need a new ad. Let’s hire that kid who eats the magic mushroom. It’ll be hep, daddy-o!”

    Well, at least Howard K. Smith gave the pretense of being impartial. There were a few who tried to act like real journalists in those days.

    I used to watch Howard K. Smith and Frank Reynolds. That ad shows news – not the fluff we are saturated with 24/7 now. People tuned in to get informed – and they were. It was not hippie-saturated, though still left-leaning in many ways. Howard K. Smith was in particular well-respected; we need more of his type today. Huntley and Brinkley were by this time old news, as their hey-day was in the early 60′s. I miss the relevance of nightly news, the reporting of facts, and the support of the media for at least SOME neutrality! Olbermann, Maddow, Couric, etc. are a sham – propaganda agents, at best.
