I’ll never forget the last presidential election, watching [Jonathan Alter of Newsweek’s] tirade on NBC at about 1:30 in the morning Pacific Time when Alter demanded that Gore be handed the election, despite the outcome in Florida. (When Tom Brokaw and Tim Russert lecture you on the Constitution, as they did to Alter afterwards on the air, you know you’re really out there.)Tennis simply takes such anger to the “logical” conclusion of its illogic. Or as Anne Applebaum once wrote about another terminal run of illogic, “Sometimes in the course of a great American debate there comes a moment when the big battle guns fall silent, the pundits run out of breath, and — unexpectedly — the long, bitter argument suddenly turns into farce”.
