What would life be like without firefighters or soldiers?

Most of the time, when you hear about a world without men, people (mainly women) talk about how there would be world peace, hearts, and butterflys. Of course, the more enlightened, or probably the more sane among us, know that this is  utterly untrue and that without men to protect a society, there would be little left of it. In my last blog post on  “Going Galt,” some readers mentioned “Going Galt” by not joining the military or staying out of jobs that require sacrifice such as firefighting or other positions that make men more disposable. I wonder what would happen if men started dropping out of those fields and took up more desk work or other positions that were safer? What do you think the society would look like?
