On Wednesday, Hillary Clinton announced her support for extending the draft to women. Then the U.S. Senate voted in favor of the measure, 85 to 13!
“I do support that,” Clinton told The Huffington Post. Nevertheless, she insisted that she opposes actually enforcing the draft. “I am on record as supporting the all-volunteer military, which I think at this time does serve our country well,” she added. “And I am very committed to supporting and really lifting up the men and women in uniform and their families.”
Clinton’s words did not reassure everyone, however. Not all senators supported it: Both Utah Senator Mike Lee and Texas Senator Ted Cruz opposed the amendment. “The idea that we should forcibly conscript young girls into combat, to my mind, makes little or no sense,” Cruz told Politico Pro. “It is at a minimum a radical proposition. I could not vote for a bill that did so, particularly that did so without public debate.”
The amendment extending the draft to women was put into the National Defense Authorization Act, a key piece of military funding legislation. Some claim this is a milestone in women’s equality for the military.
