The notorious “pussy hats” from last year’s Women’s March were actually one of the more tame fashion choices on display that day. After all, there were women dressed as female genitals prancing around in the streets. Under the circumstances, a pink knit hat with cat ears was pretty subdued.
However, it doesn’t look like the hats will be making much of a comeback for feminist rallies. It seems that many feminists think associating women with women’s genitals hurts the feelings of transgender women.
“I personally won’t wear one because if it hurts even a few people’s feelings, then I don’t feel like it’s unifying,” said Phoebe Hopps, who founded the Women’s March Michigan.
There’s an aspect to this that seems to be lacking from much of the discussion — on the Left side of the aisle, anyway. When you try to redefine the truth, there will be unforeseen consequences and contradictions.
For example, this outrage from transgender women — about female genitals being included in the definition of “woman” — completely contradicts the feminist argument that straight men must consider dating transgender women.
A transgender woman who has not opted for the surgery — who still has male genitalia — is not going to appeal to a straight man. When straight men consider partners, the “plumbing” matters. After all, it’s kind of hard to have straight sexual relations with a woman when there’s an outie rather than an innie. It’s kind of a deal-breaker. So to argue that straight men must be attracted to transgender women with male genitalia is to argue that “straight” isn’t a real thing, whether you’re male or female.
But now male and female aren’t real things, either. And transgender thus doesn’t exist. Ditto for gay, lesbian, and bisexual. Ditto for sexual orientation being genetic.
However, this mess with the Women’s March shows that transgender women know there’s a difference. They are quite aware that “pussy hats” exclude them.
The truth is that there are biological differences between transgender women and women. Yet feminists don’t think straight people have the right to be attracted to whomever they were born to be attracted to. Only transgender people have this right — which contradicts the idea that sexuality is NOT a choice, so now feminists are excluding the gay community.
The Women’s March may be telling transgendered women they’re welcome, but they’re also reminding transgender women that they’re not women.
What will feminists be telling people to think next month, next year? Whatever it is, it will just raise new issues.
