Congressional Black Caucus members will be canvassing their home districts tomorrow as a part of the “For the People” Voter Protection initiative intended to draw attention to efforts such as voter ID laws.

Tuesday is also National Voter Registration Day.

“The right to vote is a critical and sacred constitutionally protected civil right. To challenge this is to erode our democracy, challenge justice, and mock our moral standing,” said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), who will be holding an event in Houston.

CBC Democrats are protesting at least 34 states that have introduced laws that would require voters to show photo identification in order to vote and at least 12 states that have introduced laws that would require proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, to register to vote or to vote.

The CBC noted that the states involved provide 171 electoral votes in 2012 – 63 percent of the 270 needed to win the presidency.

“I urge my colleagues to join me in dismissing this crippling legislation, and pursue effective solutions to the real problems of election fraud and error,” said Jackson Lee. “We cannot let the rhetoric of an election year destroy a fundamental right upon which we have established liberty and freedom.”
