Six cast members from “The West Wing” will campaign for Hillary Clinton in Ohio this weekend.
Richard Schiff, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Dulé Hill, Joshua Malina, and Mary McCormack will participate in organizing events across Ohio with stops in the Mahoning Valley, Cleveland, Sandusky, and Toledo areas on Saturday, and in the Dayton and Columbus areas on Sunday, the campaign said.
The actors also will be urging residents to register to vote, with a deadline on Oct. 11.
Nothing says “We aren’t elitists at all” like sending actors from a show about being political insiders that’s been off the air for a decade to appeal to disaffected working class voters in Ohio.
In the world of Democrats, “Because a celebrity said so” is supposed to be all the reason the common folk need to snap into line. Sure, this video was tongue-in-cheek, but it really isn’t, if you know what I mean.
Then again, these are the same people who think Al Gore might help them with the youth vote.
The optics here couldn’t be more off, and that’s all because of the Democrats’ reflexive presumption of celebrity appeal. To think that disgruntled working class voters who many think are fueling the Trump phenomenon will be soothed and swayed by a Bradley Whitford appearance stretches the bounds of credulity. This imperious attitude may be Trump’s biggest ally at the moment.
There is also the fact that “The West Wing” went off the air more than ten years ago. People old enough to vote for the first time this year weren’t even old enough to be called “preteen” then. Sure, some have been exposed to it through Netflix, but it’s quite the Hail Mary pass to assume that struggling Rust Belt workers have been spending spare dollars on streaming television to keep them occupied.
One of the most prevalent, ongoing story lines from “The West Wing” involved the fact that the president had MS and was trying to hide it from his staff and the American people.
