In a press release issued today, Elizabeth Johnston, “The Activist Mommy,” announced that “a grassroots movement of American citizens outraged by New York’s recent abortion law have turned their anger to action with a ‘Day of Mourning’ protest on February 23rd.” The organizers are asking all Americans to participate by doing four things:
1.Wear black
2.Don’t shop
3.Close your businesses
4.Repent for the sin of abortion
A rally will be held near the statehouse in Albany, N.Y., where the controversial law, which allows abortions up to the minute of birth and does not extend any protection to babies born alive during an abortion, was celebrated by clapping and screaming Democrats. The codicil to the law allowing full-term abortion is the “life and health” of the mother, which is not defined. That is left open to the subjective interpretation of any doctor. A Supreme Court decision in Doe v. Bolton affirms that “health” has a broad definition.
Whether, in the words of the Georgia statute, “an abortion is necessary” is a professional judgment that the Georgia physician will be called upon to make routinely. We agree with the District Court, 319 F. Supp., at 1058, that the medical judgment may be exercised in the light of all factors – physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age – relevant to the well-being of the patient. All these factors may relate to health.
If a woman decides she just can’t deal with being a mother or is depressed because her boyfriend left her, she has grounds to kill a viable child, minutes before birth, legally. Any protestations that this will only be done in rare circumstances that would save the mother’s life are specious and ridiculous. There is no disease for which the cure is a dead baby.
Johnston, the event’s organizer, knew she had to act when her inbox was overwhelmed with distraught citizens begging for a way to get involved in the fight to end abortion. “History has proven that societies who kill their children will not last long,” Johnston said. “We are not only killing our babies, we are celebrating their deaths. Therefore, we are ripe for a catastrophic judgment, the kind of fall that destroyed the seemingly undefeatable Roman Empire.”
Late-term abortion has long been a warning cry of the pro-life movement that claimed the pro-abortion left was moving toward it at breakneck speed. This charge was always denied by pro-abortion advocates who claimed that they only wanted abortion to be safe, legal, and rare. In fact, most would deny that third-trimester abortions ever took place. After famous late-term abortionist George Tiller was murdered, the pro-abortion left mourned the loss of one of the only doctors who would perform such horrors. Very few doctors even want to attempt to kill a fully formed infant. The New York bill, to combat this obstacle, wrote into the law that non-physicians like nurses or physician assistants can perform these dangerous late-term abortions. How any of that makes women safer is a mystery. PJM’s Tyler O’Neil wrote an in-depth breakdown of this bill and what it will do that everyone should read. He points out the barely reported decriminalization of killing an unborn baby by homicide!
But the law also removes New York’s protections for wanted babies and their mothers, which were part of the state’s criminal code on fetal homicide.
This means that if someone beats a pregnant mother and causes her to lose her unborn baby, the law no longer considers that act a homicide. When New York legalized abortion in 1970, the law still defined the death of an unborn baby after 24 weeks gestational age as homicide — fetal homicide.
The Reproductive Health Act (S.B.240) passed and signed on Tuesday — the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade — explicitly amends the penal code to remove protections for wanted babies who die in domestic violence or other kinds of assault.
Americans are rightfully outraged. Twin entrepreneurs and best-selling authors David and Jason Benham stated, “We watched in horror as the One World Trade Center was lit up pink and New York legislators joyfully applauded the most gruesome expansions to abortion we’ve seen in our lifetime. While some are celebrating, we and millions around the nation are mourning. That is why we are standing in solidarity with our preborn neighbors at the Day Of Mourning rally.”
Organizers say the “Day of Mourning” will not be a pep rally, a fundraiser, or a political event. “We are tired of the half-measures and regulations that pro-life organizations have sheepishly attempted the last 46 years. Talk is cheap,” said John Speed, a New York business owner and one of the planned speakers at the rally.
Black conservative David J. Harris Jr., who is scheduled to speak at the New York rally, said, “Abortion is the silent scourge that has plagued Black America and wiped out an entire generation. It must end.”
The press release goes on to ask “those who cannot attend the Albany, NY, rally to still wear black, refrain from shopping, close their businesses, and pray.”
