Do you remember the Democrat Party of the 1990s? It was still left-leaning, but it was reasonable, by today's standards anyway. Now look at what calls itself the Democrat Party today, and the difference is staggering. That gap didn't open by accident, and it might be the very thing that turns the party into a long-term minority party.
As you know, there's a socialist insurgency running through the party right now, and the establishment is too scared to do anything about it. They need that radical base energized to win elections, so they look the other way. The problem is that they are enabling their own demise, and Bill Maher just proved the point.
Maher, a longtime Democrat, is publicly breaking from his own party over its shift toward radical and socialist positions.
"Every day I hear about a new, very radical. I feel very good about ten, whenever, years ago, like, I did lose fans because, you know, I wasn't going to go along with some of this crazy stuff on the left, too, I didn't change really on what I thought about the right but I can't sit and just not notice stuff which people seem to want to do because it's all about 'my team or your team," Maher said. "But yeah, there's some crazy stuff, you know, when we're cheering for the intifada… I'm out."

He also says his vote in 2028 is genuinely in play, and that alone should terrify anyone still running the party's playbook.
"You told J.D. Vance your vote is up for grabs," Karl pointed out.
"Yes, my vote is in play because it can't be Trump running," Maher replied. "So I'm not living in Communist America. I mean, I know the talking point is that 'Well, it's not communism, it's socialism.' Okay, I've read the quotes from the DSA platform from their own mouths. Don't tell me I'm not seeing what I am seeing. And DSA, again, they say things like, you know, take over of key industries, government, that's communism."

Maher says he will refuse to support the Democrats if the party continues to go down the “communism” road.

Here's why this matters beyond one comedian's opinion. Maher is a leftist. He may have issues with the woke, far left, but he's a leftist. If a leftist is willing to consider voting Republican in 2028, he won't be voting alone. This kind of thing doesn't happen in a vacuum. If Maher is thinking this way, you can bet that other leftists and a meaningful share of independent voters, who've watched the same radical drift Maher just described, are likely to make the same calculation.

Democrats currently show no sign of grappling with any of this. There's no course correction, no reckoning with why a lifelong member of their own coalition is eyeing the exit. Voters tend to notice when a party stops listening, and they tend to respond in kind. If the Democrat Party keeps mistaking its most radical voices for its base, it may find out the hard way just how small that base really is.
