In retrospect, it’s clear that they were only worried about censorship if they weren’t in control of who was censored. Most of the lefty free speech/academic freedom project was really just about building a defense for communists. Now that they’re in charge, they don’t need it and are happy to discard it. It was always just useful bullshit to them.
