A LITTLE-NOTICED “HORRENDOUS ASSAULT” IN NEW HAVEN:

The beating took place hours after Damien Blandina, 31, working underneath a car near Chapel Street and Ellsworth Avenue, was crushed when the jacks slipped from under the car.

Turner was a witness. Blandina’s friends believed him responsible and, later, after Turner had finished giving a statement to police, followed him into 66 Norton St. and set upon him. “This was a horrendous assault,” said Lt. Ray Hassett, police supervisor from the area. “The guy was defenseless.”

Sources said police did note racial undertones in the case — Turner was white and the assailants black — but ultimately race bias charges were not filed.

Two of the people in custody are juveniles. Two others, Cornelius Phillips, 27, and Robert Covington, 20, face charges including conspiracy to commit first-degree assault and burglary. Covington also faces a count of criminal possession of a firearm.

Turner didn’t look like the son Obama doesn’t have.
