Interesting Books for the New Year

I have finally had some time to read lately and just picked up a few books to read and re-read for the New Year. I actually sucked it up and bought books at Barnes & Noble as opposed to ordering them off Amazon or getting them from publishers “In the Mail.” Honestly, I was shocked at how much three books cost at an actual bookstore but I had given away or lost two of the books I bought and wanted them right away. And no, I don’t read much on Kindle, I like actual books at times.

Anyway, what am I reading? First, I bought Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance. If you haven’t read this book, do so, it’s a great story of how the white rural poor:

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

The book is a New York Times #1 bestseller and lest that make you decide not to read it, the book was named by the Times as one of 6 books to help understand Trump’s win.

And speaking of Trump, my next book was Trump: The Art of the Deal. I have read Trump’s book before but I wanted to re-read it as I find him inspirational in terms of his sheer stamina and persistence.

My last book was David Lieberman’s You can Read Anyone. Of course, as a psychologist, I like books that give insight into reading people and figuring out if what they are saying is true or not and the You can Read Anyone book does a good job of giving examples of when people are lying or being deceptive.

So, what are readers picking up for reading in the New Year? If you have ideas for good books to read over the holidays, drop a comment below.
