With just a few days to go in 2016, Gallup conducted its annual poll to determine the men and women most admired by Americans.
President Obama, for the ninth year, topped the list with 22 percent. President-elect Trump, who got 5 percent last year, came in second this year with 15 percent. Half of Democrats polled chose Obama, while 34 percent of Republicans picked Trump.
Pope Francis got 4 percent; Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) dropped a point from last year to 2 percent.
Getting a point each: Rev. Billy Graham, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Dalai Lama, former President Clinton, Bill Gates, Vice President-elect Mike Pence, Ben Carson, Stephen Hawking, Warren Buffett, and Vice President Biden.
Obama’s peak performances in the poll came in 2009 and 2012, when he hit 30 percent.
Since Gallup began the poll in 1946, the incumbent president has won 58 of 70 times, though President-elect Obama won over President Bush in 2008. The record-holder is Dwight Eisenhower, who topped the poll a dozen times.
Hillary Clinton holds the record in the most admired women category, topping the list 21 times total and for the 15th year in a row.
This year, Clinton got 12 percent while first lady Michelle Obama got 8 percent. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Oprah Winfrey tied with 3 percent. Getting 2 percent each were Ellen DeGeneres, Queen Elizabeth, Malala Yousafzai, and Condoleezza Rice.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Sarah Palin, Dolly Parton and Princess Kate got a point each.
Trump has just had one Obama-related tweet since the poll came out: “Doing my best to disregard the many inflammatory President O statements and roadblocks.Thought it was going to be a smooth transition – NOT!”
