U.S. Women’s Soccer Wins World Cup; Rapinoe Protests Anthem Again

The United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) won the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Sunday.

In a match against the Netherlands, the USWNT defeated the Netherlands with a 2-0 victory. The first goal, as a penalty goal, was scored by co-captain Megan Rapinoe and the second by Rose Lavelle.

This is the fourth time that the USWNT won the Women’s World Cup, solidifying the U.S.’s position as the country with the most Women’s World Cup victories. The USWNT also became defending champions as it has won in 1991, 1999, 2015, and now 2019.

Before the match started, Rapinoe protested again. During the Star Spangled Banner, she refused to sing and refused to place her hand over her heart, as she had done in previous Women’s World Cup matches.

Even though they are set to be invited to the White House, Rapinoe stated multiple times in the past that she would not be visiting the White House if the USWNT team wins and she added, “I suspect not many, if any, of the other players [would attend the visit.]”

However, she did state that she would visit Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for a tour of the House of Representatives.
