Super NES Classic Pre-Orders Sell Out Everywhere

You might remember that the NES Classic Edition was the must-have gift of 2016, as well as the nightmare of trying to acquire one for you or your kids due to its unbelievable scarcity and hordes of unscrupulous scalpers who ended up snatching up the lion’s share of game consoles. Nintendo is releasing the impressive-looking SNES Classic on September 29, but your chances of picking one up on launch day are already pretty slim…

People are clamoring for the SNES Classic because it is a slimmed down Super Nintendo that comes with a pair of controllers for instant multiplayer, and the following 21 timeless ’90s games: Contra III: The Alien Wars, Donkey Kong Country, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III, F-Zero, Kirby Super Star, Kirby’s Dream Course, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Mega Man X, Secret of Mana, Star Fox, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Super Punch-Out, Yoshi’s Island, and Star Fox 2 — the fully developed, but never released Star Fox sequel that was slated for release in 1996 before it was cancelled.

Pre-orders instantly sold out on Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, GameStop, and every other retail site that offered retro video game fans a chance to secure a SNES Classic before its late September release, but don’t give up hope! Some stores, including GameStop, have noted that there will be some of these mini-consoles available for fans to walk in and buy on launch day. But good luck getting in line at 5:30 a.m. to fight the scalpers and other ’90s kids to claim yours.

I have to admit that I’d like my own tiny Donkey Kong Country machine, and my personal strategy for getting a SNES Classic will be to wait outside of a local Toys R Us, because they will have some in stock on September 29, and the toy stores will not be taking pre-orders. First come, first serve! Oh, and if you want a SNES Classic too, do your best to secure one in person. Scalpers are already positioning themselves on eBay to sell these $80 novelty game systems for hundreds of dollars.
