Racist Cupcakes? Berkeley Erupts over Affirmative Action Satire
The U.C. Berkeley College Republicans struck a national nerve today by holding a bake sale with racially discriminatory pricing: Higher prices for white and Asian students, lower prices for black, Hispanic and female students. Why the intentional discrimination? To protest a pending new statewide law, SB 185, which attempts to re-introduce Affirmative Action into university admission standards, something that was banned years ago with California’s Proposition 209, a popular constitutional amendment requiring race-neutral admissions.
The purposely inflammatory gag was very clever: the goal was to make everyone point out how racist the cupcake prices were, at which point the young Republicans reply, “Exactly! Racial discrimination is unfair. Thanks for making our point for us!”
But the leftists on campus and around the state instead flew into a blind rage: The joke was too effective, so Affirmative Action proponents simply pretended to “not get it.” Accusations of racism flew back and forth and before anyone knew it we had a major FUBAR situation on our hands.
The Berkeley College Republicans set up their table on U.C. Berkeley’s legendary Sproul Plaza, birthplace of the Free Speech Movement and the place where all campus clubs host recruitment tables. By the time I showed up at 10am, there were already hundreds of protesters swarming around the table.
The cupcakes were very “diverse” in their coloration. Will the mockery never cease?
This 7-minute video montage contains several short interviews with various people at the protest, and really contains almost everything you need to know about the event. I alternate back and forth between College Republicans explaining their point, and counter-protesters trying to explain, uh, well, something or other. Almost all of these clips are “piggybacking” on interviews that other reporters did of the various people shown; whenever one camera would come out to record an interview, several additional cameras would usually appear out of nowhere to get a free ride. Some of the clips were taken by me, and some by others who sent their videos to me.
However you slice it — it’s video gold not to be missed!:
The Berkeley College Republicans were not all “white” as most people assumed; they included members of all races.
One of the young Republicans carried a sign with the discriminatory menu. Shocking!
Ward Connerly, the godfather of the anti-Affirmative Action movement, showed up took a seat at the bake sale table, where he was interviewed by various media outlets.
He calmly pointed out to all comers that the pending bill, SB 185, waiting to be signed or vetoed by Gov. Jerry Brown, was patently unconstitutional, since California voters had already amended the state constitution with Proposition 209, which plainly says “The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.” He predicted that SB 185, even if signed, would be thrown out by the courts. The only way to undo Prop. 209 would be to re-amend the state constitution to allow discrimination (highly unlikely), or to have the United States Supreme Court declare the whole thing federally unconstitutional, something which they’ve never done, despite having several opportunities to. So it looks like non-discrimination is here to stay, to the great dismay of the Affirmative Action advocates.
Several different counter-protest groups showed up. By Any Means Necessary, the leading radical Affirmative Action advocacy group, had a major presence. “BAMN,” as they are commonly known, take their name from a famous Malcolm X speech.
Someone brought some “Get the fuck/GOP out!” shirts and invited people to personalize them with their own messages; someone upgraded one of the shirts with “Fuck White Supremacy,” and laid it on the ground in front of the bake sale.
The Revolutionary Communist Party also showed up en masse, bringing along this sign which clarifies their opinion of America pretty well.
Back at the main table there were incessant arguments and discussions about race and Affirmative Action. To everyone’s amazement, the College Republicans did not back down, despite massive condemnation from the ASUC (the student government) and worldwide accusations of racism being hurled at them. In fact, they held their own in the arguments pretty well, because practically every single opponent fell face first into the simple logical trap the Republicans had set: If you think the pricing scheme is “racist,” because it discriminates according to ethnicity, then you must also think that Affirmative Action is racist, since it does exactly the same thing!
Notice how, early in the day, the sign was at first in pristine condition. But 45 minutes later…
…someone had smeared a cupcake on it in anger. And then shortly afterward…
…someone added “Be a racist dick,” completing the composition.
This enterprising young citizen journalist was interviewing everyone in sight with his flip-phone. Somebody didn’t appreciate being asked their opinion, so they whined to the police, who gave the guy a mild warning not to be so extraverted.
I don’t know how they made these double-reverse satirical t-shirts so fast!
There have been altogether too many accusations of racism and not enough accusations of sexism in this whole debate. Time to rectify matters! Let’s get sexist.
They’re so rarely in the same vicinity that one seldom gets a chance to compare the two groups. So, which do you prefer:
Republican chicks? Or…
…Communist chicks?
All sorts of white people were railing about the evils of “white privilege.” In this case, the protester was making a sarcastic commentary on the Republicans: “Defend White Privilege.”
“You represent Elitism,” this privileged white male declares.
Elsewhere, a (presumably) gay student was greatly offended that the discriminatory price list didn’t also insult and degrade queers. No fair! If you Republicans aren’t sufficiently bigoted against us, then we’ll lose relevance! By leaving any mention of us out of your bake sale, you discriminated against us by not discriminating against us!
Racial arguments raged at the Republicans’ table, but amazingly tempers remained for the most part under control, as the Republicans stayed on message and wouldn’t get baited into name-calling.
It’s a hobby of mine to notice little details in every picture. In the image above, at the very top edge, was this lonely student all by herself at the periphery of the protest, holding up a sign saying “This is wrong.” Poignant, in a way.
I tried to get an overall crowd shot to show just how huge the protest had become. Not sure if this conveys it very well, but in any case: big.
And despite all the crowds, the other worthy student groups lining Sproul Plaza were almost totally ignored. The “Abolish Sex Trafficking” booth, for example, had no traffic whatsoever, sex or otherwise. Those damn Republicans: now they’re causing an increase in sex trafficking as well!
Egotistical scuzzball Michael Delacour, a surviving remnant of the 1969 People’s Park riots in Berkeley and a notorious character in local legend, planted himself directly in front of the table for an entire hour, ranting “I am an elder! You must respect me!” Everyone tried to ignore the delusional bum and eventually he wandered away.
Before he left, he unintentionally proved why there’s no need for Affirmative Action by giving a demonstration of how much more stupid he, a white person, is than the cool and intelligent African-American Ward Connerly. It was one of the most lopsided debates I’d ever witnessed.
Nearby, the racial sides were reversed as a very angry African-American woman argued with one of the white Republicans. Afterward, he offered to shake her hand, but she instead stomped off in a huff.
Several competing protesters were jealous of the Republicans’ media-grabbing successful gimmick, and tried to come up with gimmicks of their own. This group, for example, carried Hula Hoops to show how many “hoops” disadvantaged students had to jump through to get into college.
As lame as the hoop gimmick may have been, it was practically brilliant compared to the gimmick of some student co-opers who handed out free baked goods, because “humans don’t have a price tag.” When interviewed by various reporters about the point of their protest, the answers were along the lines of “We just think everything should be free!” When one reporter asked, “Are you saying metaphorically that all applicants should be let into U.C. Berkeley, with no discriminating of any kind? Free to enter?”, there was a momentary confusion, and then an enthusiastic reply of “Yes!” But when pressed about how 100,000 applicants per year could fit onto a campus that can only hold 30,000, the co-opers hemmed and hawed, and then simply repeated, “Everything’s free!”
And the worst gimmick of all came from these Harry Potter fans who offered a price list based on the class/race system in the Harry Potter universe. Were they mocking the Republicans, or were they mocking the very concept of race? No one knew, including (I suspect) the Potter-heads themselves.
Later in the day, several hundred regimented counter-protesters showed up with the best gimmick of all, dressing in black and enacting various choreographed maneuvers, like holding hands in perfectly straight lines, and then lying on the ground. I had bailed out before their late arrival, so this photo is borrowed from Lance Iverson of SFGate.
The only counter-protester who made any kind of valid argument was this young woman who pointed out that wealthy students these days sometimes get special training in how to do well on SAT tests, something that underprivileged students usually don’t have access to. And while this does highlight one way that the “privileged” have an edge over the “under-privileged,” it has everything to do with class and nothing to do with race. The Republicans who engaged with her said they were perfectly fine with the University giving a boost to poor students for this very reason; but what about a wealthy Hispanic or African-American student who got special SAT tutoring versus a poor white student who didn’t? How would Affirmative Action rectify that problem?
The Republican students valiantly held their ground in the swirling crowd. It was something I never thought I’d see at Berkeley.
Even more remarkably, a popular professor (from the business school) held an impromptu open-air lecture explaining how Affirmative Action drags down the whole system. He gave as an example what he witnessed in Malaysia where there was government-sanctioned admissions discrimination against Chinese-Malaysians and Indian-Malaysians at the nation’s top schools. Before long, the top schools were no longer the top schools, as the general quality of the students had gone down, while formerly obscure schools that admitted the rejected students suddenly rose to the top. In his field (teaching entrepreneurship), he explained how real-world pressures demand that only the best students with the best ideas will succeed, regardless of race or gender. The marketplace is the ultimate meritocracy, and no social engineering can ever change that.
And throughout his explanation, the students around him listened attentively. A sea change?
Cal’s Indian Students Association hoped no one would notice them at their nearby table. “We have nothing to do with this!” They truly are the forgotten minority on campus, the ethnicity that doesn’t fit in the American schema. Are they part of the “over-represented minority” Asian student population, or are they oppressed brown peoples from the Third World? A little of both, but their straight-A grade point average and relentless work ethic tend to identify the Indians as part of the Oppressor Class. Spend less time studying and more time protesting, and you can finally take your place in the Hierarchy of Victimhood!

When your argument relies on the word “historically,” you know you’re in trouble. Yeah, historically there may have been discrimination, but that hasn’t been legal in, what, 46 years?
Speaking of which: Some counter-protesting group thought they’d make some kind of brilliant point by handing out flyers advertising a slave auction in 1855. Which actually reveals what this is really all about: Reparations, baby.
The most surprising part? People actually bought the Republicans’ racist cupcakes! What has become of Berkeley? Did it lose its PC gland and find its funny bone?
You know the world has turned upside down when the Republicans are the ones holding up signs saying “Stop discrimination by ‘race’,” while the liberals are protesting for discrimination.
I felt the ground shifting beneath my feet, but it wasn’t an earthquake.

etc., etc., etc. (add your own)
If you’re MUSLIM, we’ll completely redo our recipe for you and bake them all over again.
If you’re JEWISH, we’ll give you poisoned cupcakes and you’ll like them.
If you’re BLACK, we won’t give you any stinking cupcakes but we know you’ll boycott the Republican bake sale and keep coming back to us for “more.”
I went today and as a white conservative fat chick they gave me a whole tray full. Now I have to do Yoga. 300 lbs and lost 40 lbs over the summer, with these goodies I’m sure to gain 100 more lbs!!! (I need a di1do ;>)

I’m pretty sure the Berkeley students understand the concept; they just don’t want to believe they’re 25%-75% less qualified to be there than white guys who didn’t get admitted. They’re special brilliant snowflakes. Telling them otherwise hurts their feelings.

These “discriminatory bake sale” events have been around for more than a decade, and they’ve been making news for just as long. This one just made a LOT of news because it was at Berkeley, the heart of collegiate leftism.
I like John Stossel, but he didn’t invent the concept, and this young Republican group certainly didn’t lift it from him.
Stossel didn’t do it first, he was following what some college group had already done.
The “racist bake sale” concept has been around at least since the ’90s. I think at this stage there’s no way to uncover who came up with the idea originally.

This is what worried me the most about this whole situation. It’s not that so many people are counter-protesting, it’s that they have such a feable grasp of the issue and of the concept of counter-protesting that they can’t even put together a rational thought. And these are supposed to be elite college students (or maybe many of them only got in through various forms of affirmative action).

Actually, the college Republicans at Cal have had a “racist” bake sale EVERY YEAR for the last 3 or 4 years. But for the most part they were just ignored. For some inscrutable reason, this year the story caught fire. Mystery.

I think that the real reason these anti-Republican protesters are so angry is not because the “bake sale” discriminates against (or actually in favor) of minorities, but rather because it makes fun liberals and the left. These folks take themselves very seriously, especially the young campus lefties, and making them into the butt of a clever, conservative joke drives them nuts.

If some of these Berkeleyites weren’t already admitted to Berkeley, they’d have an entirely different opinion of this bake sale.
The practical effect of SB 185 will be to make the admission policies of the public universities pretty much like the private ones already are- which in California are populated by white and Asian middle to upper-middle class students. Most of those colleges care at least as much about their freshman class stats in US News & World report and the size of their endowments as they do about diversity. Hence, the “drop” referred to in the blue sign held up by the kids in the fifth picture. That is, indeed, what has happened since the Bakke case blew the lid off affirmative action in higher ed.
However, I think most of academia is itching to free itself from the demands of the marketplace and competition. One liberal arts college in LA recently removed all of its online faculty listings. This particular college sticks out in my mind because, in reviewing the composition of the faculty a couple of months ago, I had noticed it was overwhelmingly female. In fact, the entire biology department was female- very unusual for a science department. Perhaps the market was catching up with that college, and they decided to hide how biased they had become.
State universities are less beholden to these pressures. They only have to please a liberal legislature, and have a bigger pool of applicants which grows by the day as more families can’t afford private school. I can’t help but think this vaguely-worded bill is going to exert an effect much more like the old quota system did upon the public schools. Now is not a good time to be a poor, white and male kid in California.

Bingo Dana. Beat me to it. I find it interesting that the white students supporting AA do so looking hypocritical and disingenuous. They support a program that is inherently a program that is not in their best interests.
I would like to see a university hold an AA support rally and ask for every white student who supports AA to voluntarily leave college so that a black or other minority can take their seat. How many would leave? I’d like to see college administrators who support AA to voluntarily resign from their positions and ask that a black take it (from staff, to regents to chairpersons). How many would leave?
Do these same elitist white students see anything wrong with the traditionally black schools, BET, NFL/NBA, black pagents, etc??

A lot of people are getting very close to that point. We see our constitution constantly being perverted and subverted by not only the so called left but also the republican establishment dolts such as Boehner and McConnel, two more useless “representatives” there never were.
Actually Berkeley is one of the most challenging schools for science, engineering and business. Many of the “student” protesters are not students. Most of the students are busting their butts in the library or classroom.
Sure there are some fluff majors, but the typical Berkeley student does not have much time for this.

So, in civics class, the professer takes his “A” and redistributes it to a different student who is earning a “C” and Alex is understandably miffed.
“HEY!”, he screams, “I worked hard for that grade! You have no right to take it away and give it to someone else!” And the professor responds, “Welcome to the republican party.”
But truly, just because the students who aren’t actively involved in the bake sale have better things to do, and rightfully so, do not assume they are conservative. I do not automatically assume they are liberals, either but I lean in that direction when it comes to anything Berkeley. It comes down to that their faith in science has been bastardized to mean they are convinced that their national socialist professors are right about everything. And, being surrounded by it, have little or nothing else to go on and if they don’t think this way, they won’t get the dates and/or attention of the apples of their eyes. Human instinct in this case, trumps reasonable thought and clear-thinking.
So it’s one of life’s strange contradictions how a college student, or professor, can be so incredibly intelligent, yet cannot detect the obvious even if they get slapped upside the head with it. Maybe it just comes down to emotional thinking versus objective reasoning.
Or, maybe Rush is correct, the high-school young minds full of mush move on to the college mind STILL full of mush. So therefore, intelligence and the measure of it, must have many facets, not just the clinical, but the emotional part as well.
I know plenty of non-loppy hard working students at Berkeley who are NOT lefties. In fact they are very conservative. I suggest you go back and read the headline – this was a project of the Berkeley Republican Club.

I realize the protest was at Berzerkley, but I didn’t want the above to go uncorrected. I learned very early upon entering USC that UCLA stands for “University for Children of Lower Achievement”.

The police were called in to monitor what some protestors called “an incitement to hatred”!
In vain did the Tranhs protest that it was actually a service to their clientele and they had not intended any discriminatory action…all to no avail.
The Tranhs were given a summons and warned that they would have to engage a lawyer, go to court and could eventually be sued. Their immigration status would be looked at, their restaurant premises inspected for cleanliness and other illegal immigrants, and that in future the full force of the Law would be looking over their shoulder…
Two weeks after the offensive, hate-encouraging, nocive sign went up, it came down, as did the “Saigon Palace” sign that had marked my home away from home for two blissful years…
The moral of this issue is clearly never to give anyone a special promotional price that you base on any characteristic of anyone whatsoever”. Sometimes people just suck.

You see, liberals aren’t racists, or so they would like us to think. In point of fact, virtually every social policy liberals have articulated, proposed, and passed over the last fifty years has been either race-based, designed to stir the racial or some other pot, or calculated to foster conditions, (unemployment and poverty for example), to exacerbate racial tensions.
The ultimate Democrat goal has been to create a dependency on government and a rock-solid black constituency despite have been the party that fought tooth and nail to defeat Civil Rights legislation in the fifties and sixties. It’s believed that the adage “The best defense is a good offense” originated with the 19th century Prussian military theorist, Carl von Clausewitz, but whatever its origins the line has become a staple of countless sports analysts as an observation on how best to win games. The College Republicans should have set the cupcake price highest for Asians: that is the group most discriminated against by affirmative action programs nationwide, but most notably in California.
That was an original argument from the white libs for AA in CA at UCB. The fear was that if AA was not instituted and admission based only on grades and SATs then the entire population of Berkeley would be ABCs (American Born Chinese).
I’m not totally familiar with UC’s admission stats, but I think they might have their white male and Asian prices backward. Asians should probably be paying the highest prices.
I graduated UC Davis in 1996, and at least in the early 90s, all of the reverse discrimination lawsuits were being filed by Asians.

You are correct. AA in the UC system was designed to keep American Born Chinese OUT. If admission quotas based on race were instituted there would be more whites and more blacks but a lot less American Born 3rd and 4th generation Chinese kids.

If the white students who are supporting affirmative action and protesting for it were true to their belief, they would leave UC Berkeley and transfer to another school, such as a 4 year community college so that their space can be used for a minority student. If the College Republicans wanted to have fun, they should hand transfer or withdrawal paperwork to every white student protesting for AA. I bet that the white students would be horrified when caught in their hypocrisy. In fact, you should hand them a pen and a board so they can fill out the form right then. Why are they more entitled to a spot at Berkeley than some other white student. They should stand up and follow through on their beliefs. It would be fun to watch and film.

Assuming that the production cost per bake sale item was less that $.25, I am surprised the protesters did not consider a market approach to the problem. The simple market approach would have been for a large number of “oppressed” to buy up the stock of bake sale goods at the substantially reduced prices. The Republicans would swiftly have run out of cookies and cupcakes. The unthinking offended could then have set up there own less “satirical” or less “racist” bake sale in the same area with bake sale items priced—listen closely—equally.
Also, I am reminded of the legal profession’s longstanding rule: “Argue the facts when the facts are in your favor. Argue the law when the law is in your favor. When you have neither facts or law on your side—-then scream, yell, jump up and down, and pound the table with your fist.”
The oppressed and offended, apparently, could only do the latter—-best represented by the washed up, grey-haired, unhinged, Communist, baby-boomer holding a sheaf of papers and screaming through a megaphone.

This was a well thought out event. Listening to the Young Republicans and the protesters gave me a clear understanding of the difference between the two. The protesters couldn’t form a coherent line of thought. They seemed all over the place while the Young Republicans were logical and respectful in their approach

I think it has always been that way. I still remember a debate on the merits of capitalism vs. “socialism” at my university campus 30 years ago. The speakers were two professors. The professor taking the pro-capitalist side was from the philosophy department. The professor taking the pro-socialist side was from the psychology department. He was also a leader of the Anti Imperialist Alliance (AIA) a group that was opposed to both Soviet and Chinese communism as being too imperialistic; instead, they held up Enver Hoxha’s Albania as a model for the world to follow. (Clearly, his idea of “socialism” was not the social-democratic kind followed in Scaninava!) If I recall correctly, the president of the student’s council was the moderator.
All rules were agreed prior to the debate and moderator stated a summary of them, which included how long each speaker had to make his point and how long he had to rebut his opponent. Both speakers agreed verbally to follow the rules in front of the whole audience. Then the debate began. The pro-capitalist speaker was soon making a joke of the pro-socialist speaker. I don’t think that is solely my opinion because the pro-socialist speaker, seeing that he was floundering, soon refused to obey the rules that he had only just agreed to follow! He refused to cede the floor to the moderator when his time was up and denounced this as a seedy imperialist trick or words to that effect. He was so inflamed that he actually demanded that the proletariat arise and overthrow the bourgeosie IMMEDIATELY, on the spot!
Apparently, he was so lost – and knew it – that only an actual revolution could save him from the disgrace of being made a laughing-stock. I should point out that the pro-capitalism speaker never once raised his voice or failed to observe the rules to which both had agreed before the debate began.

Hey! Its not sexist, its an enhanced appreciation for the role that women have played in the advancement of civilization in bringing men into their proper role in life, expressed by the additional attention displayed to the individual in question.
I read the article and looked at the pictures (loved ‘em!) but I didn’t watch the video; sorry if this is covered there. Here’s another downside of AA: say you have a second-tier school. Many of the “boosted” minority students there aren’t able to keep up because they belong in a third-tier school but the the minorities that belong in second-tier schools have been boosted to top tier schools, where they don’t do as well as many other students, etc. Meanwhile, several of the students in “suppressed” groups at the second-tier school actually belong in top tier schools, etc so they reinforce stereotypes. And of course, “boosted” minorities flunk out a a much higher rate, limiting their ability to repay student loans, too.
That’s the real unspoken major shame of the Affirmative Action movement: That students admitted through Affirmative Action tend to drop out and not be able to keep up with the academic program at top schools. Letting them in to the school in no way guarantees they’ll graduate from the school. In reality most don’t, because they simply aren’t ready.
You can’t wave a magic wand and declare someone to be academically advanced. Doesn’t work that way.

Unless of course they are named Barack Obama and have been earmarked for greater things by the likes of George Soros or Bill Ayers. Then they get their academic records hidden, at great expense, from public scrutiny. At that point, the only reasonable assumption is that they got a undeserved pass simply on the basis of their membership in a “formerly oppressed group”, otherwise, why hide the academic records?

Hey Zombie, one thing you should mention is that at many protests its the relatively privileged white people who want to lead minorities or the poor to revolution as if they know whats best for these groups. They see themselves as a savior for everyone else who has faced substantially different problems than them.
It reminds me of the Autobiography of Malcolm X where he talks about how Christian Blacks are the only people to worship a deity that is a different race than them.

That’s a long-standing reality dating back a very long time.
Marx pontificated about the virtues of the proletariat (industrial workers) and peasants and railed against the bourgeoisie (middle class) but had a thoroughly bourgeois background himself. His partner Engels was a well-to-do heir to a wealthy manufacturer.
Lenin was not a peasant or proletarian either; his father was a well-to-do school inspector and I don’t think Lenin ever once got his own hands dirty; he graduated from law school and practiced a few years, then drifted into being a fulltime revolutionary.
Stalin was a little closer to the common man in that he grew up dirt poor and was sent to a seminary to become a priest but got kicked out for his association with local Marxists. He worked for four months as an astronomer’s assistant, then became a fulltime revolutionary, first trying to agitate labourers into strikes against the existing order, then masterminding “revolutionary expropriations” – bank robberies to you and me – to help fund the Bolsheviks.
Mao came from a rather successful family and received a good education in things like literature and poetry. As far as I can tell, he never worked a day in his life in any ordinary occupation.
Castro was from a well-to-do family of a wealthy landowner and also graduated law school. He too practiced briefly, then became a fulltime revolutionary.
Che Guevera also came from a thoroughly middle-class background and had graduated medical school.
And so on. And so on…
Naturally, I don’t know the life stories of every revolutionary that ever lived but of the ones I do know about, precious few could make any claims to actually being members of the classes that were supposed to be liberated.
Of course, Marx himself realized this (or perhaps had it pointed out to him and felt the need to rationalize it). He came up with the idea that the Communist Party was the “vanguard of the proletariat”, and wasn’t the proletariat itself. He argued that only well-educated intellectuals (like himself) could really lead the proletariat and workers against the bourgeoisie and capitalism. Only people like him had had the luxury of good educations and time to think about the Big Issues and formulate plans for making a worker’s paradise. He claimed solidarity with the proletariat – even though he never got his own hands dirty and could have had only the barest idea of their lives – and insisted that the proletariat follow the lead of the intellectual vanguard.
And that’s the way the far Left has operated pretty much ever since. Well-to-do types like Bill Ayers learn about The Revolution from their leftist professors, who of course are inspired by earlier generations of far left revolutionaries, and then work out plans to take over. The rest of us are just supposed to follow their orders without thinking because they are the (self-appointed) elites.

“Everybody knows” that protecting the consideration of “race, ethnicity, gender and other relevant factors” is intended to shore up “diversity” — an obvious codeword for affirmative action, when scholarships and loans already address the problem of economic access. Since outright racial quotas are unconstitutional, they must resort to additional euphemisms like “holistic.” It would be supremely ironic, if they end up insulating both affirmative action and its opposite from legal assault as a result.
The left must also avoid using the explicit language really necessary to achieve the results they desire, because actually making the case for good racism vs. bad racism is simultaneously an untenable intellectual slippery slope and a blatant political modus operandi.

I was the first white student kept out of an internationally recognized private New England college. Fall of 1972, that long ago. The dean of admissions gleefully told me that my application evaluation said that I was, “three times more qualified than most of our graduate students.” She was so happy until she realized I was sobbing. She then asked me where else I had applied. I told her, “this was the only school I applied to.” She said, “Well, we lose our federal funding if we don’t meet our quota of Black, Latino, of Oriental students.” I asked her if they would meet their quota and she said no. She offered to call the dean at a similar college for me. I agreed to that and went to better school, however it was in Baltimore where The Wire and Homicide were made. That’s another story which I could have done without.

Yes, I am similar to a college student in that I have been to college.
However, I am also dissimilar in that I am currently no longer in college as a student.
Just because someone is enrolled at a decent college does not mean they are capable of logical thought.
So, considering the “liberal” agenda is simply to be as foolish as possible with big government, and the “conservative” agenda is to be as foolish as possible with a small government, the better of the 2 choices is the least foolish impact on the world through the limitation of the fools aka government.
If you want to fix the wrongs of the previous generations, then fix them. Cut military spending and return ALL American troops to US soil within the 50 states. In the same way, force the self-enslaved to better or die through the complete removal of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. That, with a 50% cut to military spending lust the US in the realm of a 50% savings of current fiscal spending.
The final piece of the puzzle is the complete removal of limiting regulation for new business. Since the government can only consume or shuffle resources, the only economical force that can build jobs are businesses, and historically the overwhelming leader in job creation that benefit the economy for more than six months are NEW businesses.
Yes, in just a few sentences I have solved the problems facing our nation. I have solved the problems in the correct manner as dictated by reason and logic. And finally, to return to the current topic, the above solutions have freed up significant funding so that we can completely rebuild our education system as is a total loss. When most of the millionaires in the US are dropouts of our education system or have made their wealth pitied the realm of their studies, we should look at that system as a total loss.
As usual, the typical leftist response at the Bake Sale, and Lefty trolls on this site can only resort to petty, infantile, vulgarities…probably because they are inherently mentally handicapped knuckledragging animals that deserve to be put in zoos for all of our safety.

Love the confrontational mature of the Berkley event. Fight fire with fire, I say. One thing I would have done different for maximum effect. I would have flipped the pricing scheme. I realize the message in the scheme. What I would have hoped to accomplish by a reverse price scheme is not only to make a point about reverse discrimination but to confuse the minorities in doing so. First one expect minorities to object to removing affirmative action. But then to be asked to pay top price, again appearing to discriminate against them would be more than they could handle, intellectually, I think. If a confused Berkley liberal head explodes, does the problem go away? Rhetorically, of course.

There are no “legacy” admissions at the University of California. Not allowed. That only happens at private schools.

The Republican Party was founded to put an end to slavery, and from the very beginning was the party opposing racism. The Ku Klux Klan was a Democratic Party offshoot. Frederick Douglass was a Republican. The Democratic Party to this day seeks to enslave blacks through addiction to entitlement programs.

I live in an upper-middle class neighborhood near UC Berkeley. The Asians that live here have the same low opinion of black / hispanic college affirmative action beneficiaries that the whites do. In some ways even more so. They work their asses off to get into a good school only to told that someone with a SAT score 200 points lower got in instead of them. They also get the same physical hazing and bullying from NAMs that the whites do.
It’s funny how Republicans have to go back to the era of Lincoln to claim that they aren’t racist. The same Republican party that more recently took in Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms and all the Dixiecrats who left the Dems when they became the true party that opposed racism (and continues to oppose it). The Republican Party today has nothing to do with Lincoln or the Republicans of his era. Today’s Republican Party is the party for racists. Try being honest and admit it.
