I remember the first time I saw him in a guest appearance on Happy Days where he introduced his Mork character. His performance then made such a lasting impression -- so manic and uproariously funny, I still remember it almost 40 years later. It's so sad that someone who brought such joy to so many was fighting a terrible illness at the same time and eventually lost his battle.

I don't have anything nice to say, so I won't, save this: A very good friend of mine did the same thing not that long ago, and to be blunt, checking yourself out is bull$hit.

Be thankful the Black Dog isn't biting you.

Depression hurts and the comic genius makes you laugh so you won't catch it for fear he's contagious.

He played a painfully shy genius opposite DeNiro in "Awakenings".

He played a visitor from another planet. He played an outsider escaping to a freedom in a new land. And he played a cartoon genie who could grant wishes.

There is a thread woven there. You only had to look behind the makeup of Mrs. Doubtfire to find it still unstitched and hanging from his sleeve.

His politics were not my politics, but there was a kindness in him that was palpable.

He just had to learn to stop hurting inside. Only the laughter was contagious.

From a libertarianish perspective, I consider suicide a completely valid option. So I'm not bumming too much.

But RIP is certainly in order.

From Stanyan Street in S.F. to the Napa Valley to Tib, there is dismay.
