Peggy Noonan is From the Government and She’s Here to Help

July 29th, 2013 - 2:18 pm

I’d somehow missed Peggy Noonan sucking up to the IRS the other day — not that I’m too surprised by it or anything. Read:

In all the day-to-day of the IRS scandals I don’t think it’s been fully noticed that the overall reputation of the agency has suffered a collapse, the kind from which it can take a generation to recover fully. In the long term this will prove damaging to the national morale—what happens to a great nation when its people come to lack even rudimentary confidence in the decisions made by the revenue-gathering arm of its federal government?

Oh. Dear. The people have lost faith in the Federal government’s arguably nastiest agency. However shall the Republic survive? Please — this is what happens to your perspective when you spend your entire professional life inside the Washington bubble.

I doubt the American people have ever held the IRS in much esteem. It’s even a part of the American zeitgeist that the IRS is thought of with a combination mocking laughter and flop-sweating fear. I’d go further, and argue that it’s healthy for a free people to distrust their own tax collectors.

That’s especially true of the modern IRS, which has its own courts, its own SWAT team, virtual dictatorial power to garnish your wages, and will soon be in possession of all our medical records.

The day an agency like improves our “national morale” is the day America is over.

AND ANOTHER THING: Is “national morale” in this context just the creepiest phrase ever? It made me flash on Chick Morrison, the “national morale conditioner” in Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged.

I don't think Ms. Noonan is speaking about the general distrust of the IRS, she's speaking about the now-palpable fear of a weaponized IRS aimed squarely at opponents of the current administration. And, frankly, the idea that Obama's IRS will be primary enforcer of Obamacare scares the sh*t out of me.

National Morale has been damaged?
With a 2-term sh1tbag progressive lifelong Democrat in the White House! No way!
A guy who's never worked a real job, with the single-most-powerful position that 1 man can have, is lecturing us on how to pay taxes and is mocking us for wanting more responsible people to uphold our expectations of the social contract.
Awesome.
(It's the GOP's fault, though, right?)

Peggy Noonan can be a great writer, but too often half her articles are about how she's essentially pining to be the Next Great GOP Candidate's Speechwriter, and that only she (and only she) can save them from the utter ruin that is their speeches. Everything then devolves from that paradigm.

She also spends half her time catching up to where we are. It's irritating.

I think Peggy is directing her argument to those not inclined to agree with Stephen, those who think a strong and capable government is a wonderful thing we should all cherish. Something like: OK, people, you have bought into Obama and all his wonderfulness, but he has undermined our respect for the basic functions of government by completely politicizing the IRS, which should scare even a big government liberal or a good-government RINO.

I'm not sure that would be a very successful line of argument, but undermining this administration among its own base (or the independent middle that twice voted for the guy, but can be convinced to swing the other way when superstar Barack is not on the ticket) needs arguments that speak to their concerns, not the concerns of those who have never bought what Obama is selling.

It should tell you something that we lump DEATH and taxes together. Not really a recipe for good morale.

Maureen Dowd would never vote for a Republican because of his skin color.
