Microsoft Slashes Surface RT Prices for Schools

June 18th, 2013 - 4:32 pm

Fire Sale

Apple Insider has the full story. But it’s mostly a whole lot of nothing. For starters, $199 is a sucker price, because the Surface just isn’t usable without a keyboard and a trackpad. It’s unique in being the only touch tablet without a fully touch-friendly operating system.

Oh, and there aren’t any apps for it, either. And the screen sucks compared to iPad and even many Android devices.

The problem with RT isn’t the price; it’s all the other stuff I just mentioned.

The problem with the RT is that its mediocre hardware accompanied by abyssmal software.

Microsoft's shareholders really are going to regret not firing Ballmer's butt a long time ago.

Seems to me that they're really splitting hairs to come up with 'harsh colors', ugly UI, and inconsistent icons. If that's the worst they can find in a beta, I'd say it'll be just fine. Haters gonna hate.

If the thing is unusable w/o a keyboard and mouse, how can you even call it a tablet? It's really a sub-ultrabook. If I wanted a laptop, I'd get a laptop.

In the next week or so, I'm finally retiring my 15" MacBook. The iPad does eveything it used to do but better. If I have to do real work, I got a desktop.

The big question:

Can you wipe RT and install Android? If so, the value goes up a bit.

I expect we'll see Linux and Android ports for the RT soon. Working past the UEFI nonsense is the main hurdle.
