Microsoft to City Teachers: Drop Dead
August 31st, 2012 - 3:26 pm
Microsoft refuses to give a teacher their standard education discount on Office, because her email address ends in .gov instead of .edu — just like every other New York City public school teacher.
Brain-dead service.
(H/T, the Bearded One.)

OpenOffice from Apache. It’s free.
And let’s not even think of what happens when you get outside the US and .edu doesn’t exist at all.
(Seriously though, whose stupid idea was it to make .edu US-only?)
A while back I was reading a science fiction book from the library about the effects of a late 21st century mixed naval force that had been accidentally sent back in time to 1942 IIRC. Due to this and that, Himmler has to use the Microsoft file system. He swears that if the Reich ever gets a hold of Bill Gates his death will be a long and messy one.
That was John Birmingham’s Axis Of Time trilogy, which was just plain old good fun. I understand he’s working on a fourth book.
