Name That Party
Horrible news out of Texas, by way of a Colorado lawmaker:
A vehicle driven by Colorado state Sen. Suzanne Williams collided with another on a Texas highway, killing a pregnant woman from Amarillo, the Department of Public Safety said.
Williams, of Aurora, Colo., was treated at Northwest Texas Hospital and has been released, Trooper Gabriel Medrano said Monday. He said the woman who died was 30-year-old Brianna Michelle Gomez and her baby boy was in critical condition after being delivered via cesarean section.
Medrano said the 65-year-old senator was driving northbound on U.S. 385 in Hartley County when she veered onto southbound traffic “for an unknown reason” and collided with the vehicle in which Gomez was riding.
Can you name Williams’ party? The Houston Chronicle couldn’t.

The Gazette couldn’t name the party either, but that’s just because it was an AP story.
Hell, her own website also doesn’t mention her party affiliation.
I suppose that might be an attempt at a bipartisan appearance.
Not that ANY of this matters just now, but the local paper mentioned it:

Kenny, I don’t think her party matters at all. But you know that if she’d been on the other side, you know her party affiliation would have been in the first or second graf, or maybe right up top in the lede.
If she’d been a Republican, not only would it have been mentioned but you’d probably see some inuendo about driving under the influence or some-such.
she was big on passing seat belt laws. . . so of course two of her kids were ejected from her car because they were not wearing theirs.
Obeying the law is for the little people.

I came across what I perceived to be a version of “Name that Party” that involved a Republican politician, the other day. An Arizona state legislator was attacked and knocked unconscious. He’s going to be alright. I’m assuming he’s a Republican, because being attacked and heroically recovering could be construed as helping his reelection efforts. Anyway, the article didn’t say what party he belonged to, just that his wife said he hoped to be “dropping the gavel” on the opening of the next session of the legislature. The legislature is run by the Republicans over there, isn’t it? Oh, and he owns a small business…I think that means I don’t even have to look him up, which I didn’t bother to do…
What bothers me is that the senator’s car “veered onto southbound traffic ‘for an unknown reason’,” not to mention she “doesn’t remember much from the accident.”
If someone who wasn’t a state senator tried peddling that story to the police, well…
-”Ok, ma’am, can you tell me what happened? How did your car end up in the southbound lane?”
-”I don’t know.” (officer prevents himself from rolling eyes)
-”Could you tell me what you do remember?”
-”Not much.”
After which officer probably has to return to his cruiser to calm down.
well, it bothers me, too, but i can think of three reasons to cause this event without even thinking too hard. a TIA. a cardiac arrhythmia, a seizure. i doubt that she is lying. it is very unlikely that she did this on purpose. perhaps you are implying drugs or alcohol? possible, but so is a brain tumor. also, event amnesia post accident is very possible if there was any head trauma. she was a COLORADO state senator on a TEXAS highway. i doubt that that bought her much with a texas state trooper
Many of those things would leave a medical record, or have been in evidence at the time of the accident. None of them were mentioned. QED.
Drugs or alcohol are possible. I was thinking of lack of sleep myself. Other possibilities include talking on a phone, talking to her family in the car, being distracted while her son changes the kids into pajamas, or even plain stupidity.
…And who says someone in Colorado didn’t call someone in Texas? You know, a little favor.
This reminds me of that California state senator Carole Migden who had several incidents like this one but still kept getting re-elected. Again most of the stories did not mention the party. They finally got rid of her but then the gov tried to appoint her to a state board which would have paid her more than she made as a state senator.
Ain’t bias great if you are on the right (left) side of the aisle?
