Naming Names
June 27th, 2002 - 11:31 am
Drudge says someone is getting ready to leave the Supreme Court.
What, with this pressing Pledge issue at hand?
Seriously, though — anyone want to place bets on who is retiring? Just leave a little comment.
UPDATE: I can’t find any bookies on the web taking bets on this. Anyone want to help?
FURTHER UPDATE: Laurence Simon has the betting line.

Rehnquist.
Anyone have any odds going on this stuff?
Darn. Was hoping the first name to coincide with the word “resignation” out of Washington would be Colin Powell.
It’s not Stevens… he will only leave feet-first. Three chips on Rehnquist. Bush will then nominate a new Chief or try to elevate Kennedy.
Democrats will fight and delay nomination and approval to push this into next election, causing major uproar to coincide with Republicans stumping for “pledgegate” non-issue.
If there is any sort of higher power at all, it’ll be that moron Rehnquist. I’ll never forgive him for his specially designed Impeachment Robe. Ass.
Ahh yes, the impeachment robe. Looked like something out of Attack of the Clones. Rehnquist is the logical choice, due to the rumors of the past couple weeks. But, my bet is that Drudge is wrong.
I may get Supreme Court fever, but not until the World Cup is over.
While the impeachment robe is pretty dumb, the idea behind it is sorta keen. Wouldn’t it be awesome if each justice got to design their own robe? Ginsburg would be in some bright red thing with wings and flames, and Breyer could go the opposite path, sewing himself a pure white cape with, perhaps a halo…ok, I’m done.
Anyway, Drudge is probably wrong, but I’m going to be unique and say Sandra Day is the next one to go.
No. He is right, just watch. If it doesn’t happen soon, it will once the initial furor dies down. Don’t know, don’t care who is stepping down or stepping up, just know that until there are 9 lefty wacko justices, those evil, wily, chuckleheads the Republicans, will be able to treat women like it is the 17th century and make seniors eat dog food.
These rumors crop up every year at this time, but they’re just rumors.
Stevens, Souter, Breyer and Ginsburg won’t want Bush picking their successor.
Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas, and Rehnquist will want to see their successor confirmed by a GOP senate. trying to sneak a guy with no record past a hostile confirmation committe is how they ended up with Souter.
O’Connor has 4 to her left and 4 to her right on most issues, so her word is essentially law on most closely divided issues. The Cheif wishes he had that kind of power.
Barring unforseen and unreported health problems, there will be no changes before the ’04 election.. maybe longer if the Dems can hold onto their stolen Senate.
oops, I meant the ’02 election.
o’connor.
Chief Justice Warren Burger.
(mmmm…burger…)
Oh, wait…(snaps back to reality)…I’d put money on O’Connor. She was ready to leave during the election fiasco, wasn’t she, and only held on to make sure that a Republican prez would appoint a like-minded Republican…?
It’s not the 17th century?
Damn, my watch must have stopped again.
