The Free Beacon’s Bill Gurtz reports that Islamist militants in Libya have taken control of about a dozen airliners.

Islamist militias in Libya took control of nearly a dozen commercial jetliners last month, and western intelligence agencies recently issued a warning that the jets could be used in terrorist attacks across North Africa.

Intelligence reports of the stolen jetliners were distributed within the U.S. government over the past two weeks and included a warning that one or more of the aircraft could be used in an attack later this month on the date marking the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, said U.S. officials familiar with the reports.

“There are a number of commercial airliners in Libya that are missing,” said one official. “We found out on September 11 what can happen with hijacked planes.”

Indeed.

Tripoli airport and at least seven aircraft were reported damaged during fighting that began in July. Photos of the airport in the aftermath showed a number of damaged aircraft. The airport has been closed since mid-July.

The state-owned Libyan Airlines fleet until this summer included 14 passenger and cargo jetliners, including seven Airbus 320s, one Airbus 330, two French ATR-42 turboprop aircraft, and four Bombardier CJR-900s. Libyan state-owned Afriqiyah Airways fleet is made up of 13 aircraft, including three Airbus 319s, seven Airbus 320s, two Airbus 330s, and one Airbus 340.

The aircraft were reportedly taken in late August following the takeover of Tripoli International Airport, located about 20 miles south of the capital, by Libyan Dawn.

Al Jazeera television reported in late August that western intelligence reports had warned of terror threats to the region from 11 stolen commercial jets.

In response, Tunisia stopped flights from other Libyan airports at Tripoli, Sirte, and Misrata over concerns that jets from those airports could be on suicide missions.

Egypt’s government also halted flights to and from Libya.

More at the link. Libya is more or less what Syria would be if Obama had gotten his way, and Assad had been ousted while the Islamic State threat grow.

personally I wouldn't be upset if they flew one into the White House when the B.O. was there.

But the reality is will our air force be ready to blow up these planes before they become bombs, and how many women and children will Muslims put on the planes to make blowing them up a terrible decision for others.

But the course is clear, they violate US air space, they get blown up,

Obama: Well, the JV can put on a pilot's uniform, but that doesn't make them Top Gun.

Hillary: This has nothing to do with Benghazi. Don't look at Benghazi. What at this point does it matter? Benghazi is a phony scandal. There is no Benghazi. Stop saying Benghazi.

Biden: Oooh, a pool party! Can I swim naked?

Carter: Islam is wonderful and I hate those Jooos.

Good grief. Didn't the State Department just announce that Libyans in the US could start attending flight schools? This is ridiculous and dangerous.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A TOP GUN TO DESTROY THE UNITED STATES
All you have to do is fly a plane high enough off the Atlantic coast, go inland a bit, and detonate a dirty bomb. Poof. This will set off a EMP (electro magnetic pulse) that can take out the Northeast electric grid -- 75% of America will go dark with the possibility of 67%-90% of the population dying. All it takes is just 9 transformer sub stations to be destroyed. http://am970theanswer.com/pages/AaronKlein -- At the bottom of the page are podcasts. This post stirs together three separate-but-serious threats:

1. A 'dirty bomb.' This is a conventional bomb strapped to something radioactive -- could be research materials, the radioactive part of a radiation treatment machine, etc. When the bomb is detonated the radioactive 'dirt' drifts downwind, contaminating everything.

2. An EMP attack. Electromagnetic impulse -- this takes a nuclear bomb which is most effective if detonated a couple hundred miles up over mid-continent. The pulse zaps many different kinds of electrical and electronic equipment and is considered likely to take down all three U.S. power grids (east, west, Texas), damaging most important components throughout each. There are nothing like that number of spares available, nothing close to the trained personnel needed to repair everything at once. Since EVERYTHING now depends on electricity and there's only about three days food in the pipeline from factory to consumer, its considered likely that most Americans would starve.

The interesting thing about this is that although there's no serious disagreement about the seriousness of the threat and rather modest technical precautions would dramatically improve the odds, nothing is being done. The industry doesn't know exactly what to do and doesn't want to spend any money (regulated monopolies ...), it fears liability if it changes anything without government cover. Congress has for several years been stuck on 'maybe next year.' We probably need five to ten years to get ready but the start date is still somewhere in the future and nearly every potential enemy nation that has nukes (plus Iran) has tested the parts of an EMP attack.

If one day the lights and everything else go off and you starve, EMP is why. Your choice about whether you thank Congress first or touch your forehead to the ground in the direction of Mecca or North Korea.

3. Transformer sub-stations on the grid. In addition to being (like everything else electrical/electronic) vulnerable to EMP, the substations can be attacked in conventional ways, including with small arms. This has already been tested -- couple of years back, in San Jose CA. The damage was substantial but was (by choice?) not as severe as total destruction.

These sub-stations are out in the open, often defended only with a chain-link fence although sometimes also with alarms and cameras. Many sorts of conventional attack would be effective, and indeed, it's considered that only nine would have to be disabled to take down the grid. This is, however, likely not so serious as a successful EMP attack because most other equipment would survive.

On the other hand, shooting up a bunch of sub-stations all at once is pretty easy to do.

Not even Sept 11 was big enough to cause DC to break out of their usual fuster cluck. We have 5,000 nuke warheads in warehouses waiting to be dismantled, plus all of the nukes we have ready to go. We could make this problem go away in 30 minutes if anyone thought it was important. Even our "cowboys" are feckless and PC.

Deport Islam and nuke Islam. Their region won't improve while their "moderates" and secular members flee the region ASAP.

DC is bought and paid for by Wahhabi Saudi money. They'll do nothing to stem the tide of Islam.

The only "odd" point is that most of them are bought off by the Sunnis, whereas Obama's heart lies with the Shi'a.

Israel has strict protocols in place to deal with planes approaching its borders. The IAF regularly scrambles fighters to confront planes that approach without proper identification. I'm old enough to recall a Libyan (!) airliner in 1973 that breached the Israeli-occupied Sinai and failed to respond to instructions by IAF pilots. It was shot down.

Bonus points if:

A) you're paying for their flight school on a student visa they've over-stayed
B) you're paying for their deportation (wow is that a long shot to happen)
C) you're gonna pay for the stamps on the letters we'll send to say "we didn't really mean to deport you"
D) you're disgusted because you know it's true

W.E.B Griffin, who writes a lot of fact laden novels about intelligence and the military, had a book about something similar - but not 30 planes. They can be outfitted with extra fuel bladders, hopped below the radar to places like Venezuela or Cuba and then used to launch attacks on the US. Hopefully our SOF are in the process of stealing them back or blowing them up.

It's by Bill GERTZ, with an "e", and yeah, it matters. When your name is associated with accuracy and balance and deep knowledge spanning decades, you emphasize it. Gertz' stuff is solid gold and on-point, and, even if he isn't the best friend to the intelligence community, he was always fair to us. He doesn't push an agenda, but as far as I know he never published anything that harmed national security, either. He wrote plenty of pieces exposing either poor work or embarrassing practices, but that's very different from actually setting out to sabotage the work of dedicated people making a good faith effort to do a tough job within the law. He made us better.
