Islamists militants who seized parts of northern and western Iraq last month posted images online Saturday of at least ten shrines and mosques they claim they have destroyed in the province of Nineveh. Photos show bulldozers knocking down Sunni Arab and Sufi shrines and explosives destroying six Shiite mosques.

Residents of Mosul, which is the capital of Nineveh, said the militants have also occupied two cathedrals belonging to Chaldean and Orthodox Christians. Crosses on the churches have been replaced by the black flag of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group which recently declared the establishment of an Islamic caliphate.

On Tuesday, two nuns and three orphans went missing from an orphanage in Mosul. It is believed they have been kidnapped by ISIS militants. On Saturday, a senior Christian leader in Iraq appealed for their release. “We are appealing for scholars in Mosul and tribal sheikhs to help us release two nuns and three orphans,” said Chaldean Patriarch Louis Sako. ”Christians are not party to these events,” Sako added. “We lived together side-by-side (with Muslims) for 14 centuries. We still want to communicate and live together.”

Iraq’s Christian community has dwindled to a small fraction of what it had once been — once numbering more than a million nationwide, there are now fewer than 400,000 across the country. Nearly all of  Mosul’s Christians have fled since the city fell to ISIS on June 10th; ISIS members bombed an Armenian church near al-Salaam hospital and ransacked the Church of the Holy Spirit. Two days after the raid on Mosul, ISIS imposed Sharia law and began demanding a poll tax from Christians. On June 21st, ISIS members raped a mother and daughter who could not afford to pay the poll tax and killed four women for not wearing veils.

The only country in the middle east it is safe to be a Christian is Israel.

This is Islam. Can we finally say that? What is happening under ISIS is also happening through out the Islamic world but at a much slower rate. Look at the plight of Christians in Egypt. Iraq and Syria already saw great destruction to the Christian communities even before ISIS. And the internecine slaughter within Islam is everywhere: Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, etc.

Yet the taboo that prevents us from saying this is Islam (outside of a few conservative venues and one or two liberal pundits) keeps us from facing reality. How much will it take before we can say this is Islam?

Islam unleashed. This glimpse of the way Islamists operate when there are no restraints is like a scene from hell. It is also a timely warning to western countries not to be colonized by stealth by this appalling cult.

if the Vatican, the Church of England, the Presbyterian Church and the UN are not concerned

why should we care.....obviously if the situation were really dire, they would do something other than condemn Israel

Call me crazy but why didn't they leave when they all had a chance? I mean, d they really think Islam of any stripe was going to overlook them? The nuns should taken those children and split when the going was good.

We cannot say this is Islam, because then we must justify extraordinary support we provide Saudi Arabia, the largest funding entity of Global terrorism and promoter of Sharia law. For 60 years we have done all possible to promote and protect Sharia Law, sowing seeds of our own demise.

How is the Arab Spring working out for everyone?

Chrysippus - The first part of recovery is admitting the errors of ones ways.

Try it.

This is Islam. It needs to be reformed or removed.

I don't really know why the U.S. should get involved. If Shiite and Sunni muslims want to run around killing each other I see it as a win-win for the U.S.

Or, as supposedly Menachem Begin said with respect to the Iran-Iraq war, "the best of luck to both of them!"

Islamic Vipers fanging each other is fine by me. When the dust finally settles, and one faction remains, why then that's our chief enemy. Thanks for identifying yourself to us.

Error in the first paragraph. It is Shia and Sufi mosques that are being demolished. Not Sunni.

Only 400 thousand Christians left. Let's say 0nly 50 thousand Christian men there.

That is enough to attack, out maneuver the enemy, and assault through any situation leaving no enemy alive as you do so. Divide into 5 1000 man teams. Communicate and destroy. Or, wait to be murdered.

I thought ISIS was Sunni? Why attack Sunni holy places? May the G-d of Noah and Abraham come to earth again soon.
