The “virgin killer” is now getting his shrines in the media, as journalists distill his spree into digestible, bite-sized chunks and use his heinous actions to ride their own hobbyhorses around their elite media ranches. The second link is particularly shameless — the WaPo’s Ann Hornaday wants more women making movies. The virgin killer presents as good an opportunity as any to push for that.

He is also spawning another gun control movement. Even though he purchased his guns in California, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation.

Basically, the killer was a rich kid who was frustrated that he wasn’t richer, connected to an industry obsessed by beauty that has its deeply ugly side too. Rather than work to achieve whatever his goals were, he felt entitled to own the world, setbacks led to more frustration, and he lashed out with deadly force. We could talk about the values we’re no longer teaching our kids, that we’re no longer even allowed to teach them. We could talk about mental illness treatment, in the context of a government that prioritizes abortifacient mandates and gutting the Bill of Rights while neglecting healthcare for veterans. But instead, we’ll all become familiar with the killer’s details and we’ll fight about guns again. Even though even the most radical Democrat surely knows by now that they’re not getting our guns, period. Not gonna happen.

In death, the latest killer is getting something he could not get in life with all these media shrines and dissections and a political fight over the damage he did — recognition. We’ll talk more about him than about his victims. The next potential killer out there is paying attention.

So, um.... let's trip on over to lMDB and have a look at the synopsis of the film that this maniac's father was creating. Let's see.... ah, here we go -

"...Part entertainment, part brutal retribution for a past rebellion, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors while the citizens of Panem are required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives."

I grew up in Southern California. It's virtually impossible for a rich kid, driving a fancy BMW, and with a father connected to Hollywood, to run around there for years, and not get laid.

This Jerk had every advantage imaginable, but he was a psychopath, and most women, fortunately, can sense that. If he hadn't gone on this murder rampage, he probably would have become a serial killer, and possibly have killed even more people than he did. We should count our blessings.

From his own writings he was motivated by 1) envy (he wanted what others had without having to earn it) 2) pride (he was convinced he was "destined for greatness" and was good looking, wonderful, etc. and 3) lust (he was so obsessed with women that they steered clear of him... we've all known that guy). There's a reason they're called "deadly" sins.

If all that was bothering this killer was boiled down to "I wanted to get laid" he could have easily driven to Carson City Nevada and visit the "Moonlight Bunny Ranch". No, I don't patronize but I have visited the place just to see. It's not creepy or dirty and he could have had a fun time. Money for this kid apparently wasn't an issue.

His rant sounded like planks in the Democrat platform:

1. An absolute right to get laid.

2. Anybody you envy should be punished.

blame the killer, and lets be thankful that he is now dead, so we won't have to deal with his trial, his defense lawyers trying to justify his rampage and the costs of housing and treating him.

And there is the media, looking to make victims out of everyone at every UC campus with flags draped at half staff, and talking about a community greatly concerned.

Wish that the gang murders and butchery would get a small amount of this misplaced guilt.

Wow, think about it. He's the modern day version of the square, the nerd or geek, who lived through the sixties and three days at Woodstock '69 getting high and still couldn't get laid. Earth Momma, also known as Material Girl, is just not into Pajama Boy.

Mr. Preston: Thanks for pointing to the media, again, as enabling future monsters. (Thanks also for not naming the "virgin killer"; as you suggest, he doesn't deserve it.)

But the media doesn't seem to be learning. Every time this happens, they celebrate the monster endlessly, thereby encouraging the next one.

So perhaps we need to strike out in a new direction. If the media will celebrate the monster anyway -- and make him a household name -- then perhaps we need a counterstrike, in the form of a media site that shows these monsters for what they are, ridicules them, and discourages others from ever, ever emulating them.

Wanting more women to make movies, presumably because the movies would be gentler.
Kathryn Bigelow's two big flicks are "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty." Puts a chink in that concept.

Didn't see ZDT but The Hurt Locker was very good.

Liked ZDT, mixed feelings on Hurt Locker. Thing is, they're both a looong way from Disney. You know, Mulan...oops, bad example.

I don't know if anything Brian says about the shooter is correct - not enough info at the moment. However, I think that in common with many young male mass murderers, he was trapped in a narrative of his own making. It's all about rejection, persecution, anger, revenge, and probably fame. The narrative defends and reinforces a badly inflated, badly wounded ego. I don't know whether the ego created the narrative or vice versa.

I would say that at some point, the kid decided to think this way - i.e., the way depicted in his "manifesto - because it made him feel better, or at least feel better about feeling bad.

I think his narrative was like taking slow poison. Maybe it made the hurt more bearable, but eventually it killed him.

A healthy person just deals with it. No narrative - or maybe a healthy narrative rather than a hate-filled, destructive one.

However, I do agree with Brian that the media circus is predictable. It's a cliche now. No tragedy is "complete" until it's been consumed, digested, and crapped out by the mass media. A mass shooting is chaos. Media poop has form. Most people prefer form - any form - to chaos.

Young men on psych drugs and too much time on their hands seem to be the pattern. Why the hell would you torture your kid by taking him to a psychiatrist to drug him? You're just asking for trouble.

Parents take their kids to psychiatrists because the children are reacting poorly to the world. Medications help some kids and it can take some trials to find the right medications. Medications aren't suitable for every kid. Please be a bit careful with the width of the brush, eh?

I can't get past the horrific practice of parents intentionally DRUGGING their children! I guess I'm in the minority to think that drugs don't solve problems.

Maybe we're too sophisticated for our own good. The range of "normal" behavior for boys is shrinking.

I suspect that if all of his friends (if any) or at least acquaintances especially women were asked to describe him in one word they would all pick "creepy" to describe him.

Oddly, if he'd been caught before he killed himself, women would be lining up for some conjugal visits. Look at the Tsarnaev brothers.

I know the father of a man who was wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and children. He got married again during his 8 years in prison. After he was released (new trial, innocent verdict), she divorced him.

It's a sickness all its own.
