White House Denies Dick Durbin's Smear of GOP Leaders

On his Facebook page, Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin posted a tale in which a Republican House leader meeting with President Obama told the president “I cannot even stand to look at you.”

Many Republicans searching for something to say in defense of the disastrous shutdown strategy will say President Obama just doesn’t try hard enough to communicate with Republicans. But in a “negotiation” meeting with the president, one GOP House Leader told the president: “I cannot even stand to look at you.”

What are the chances of an honest conversation with someone who has just said something so disrespectful?

The Republicans present denied, and the timing — coming at a time when Democrats are on the defensive over Obamacare — made it suspect as well. Then, consider the source — Durbin is the same senator who compared US troops to Hitler and Pol Pot a few years back. In his Facebook post, Durbin named no names, thereby implicating all of the Republican leaders and staff who may have been present at the meeting.

Now the White House is basically telling Durbin, “Hey, you’re on your own here.”

[White House spokesman Jay] Carney, clearly prepared for the question, gave a direct answer.

“I looked into this and spoke with someone who is in that meeting and it did not happen,” Carney said.

The reporter followed, “Did anyone from the White House speak to Sen. Durbin about it?”

Carney responded, “I don’t know. My understanding is, again, from a participant in the meeting it did not happen.”

Getting such a direct answer from Carney is almost unheard of.

In his Facebook post, Durbin asked “What are the chances of an honest conversation with someone who just said something so disrespectful?”

What are the chances of having an honest conversation with a smear artist who is a proven repeat offender?
