So, all diplomatic options to avert a military strike on Syria had not been exhausted…?

President Obama on Monday took a sharp turn away from his “red line” threat to Syria on the eve of taking his case to the American people, saying in an interview with Fox News that he’s open to negotiations on an alternative plan that could avert a military strike.

The president was responding to a proposal, formally put forward by the Russians, to have the Assad regime turn over its chemical weapons to international control.

“We will pursue this diplomatic track,” Obama told Fox News. “I fervently hope that this can be resolved in a non-military way.”

How is it that an offhand comment from John Kerry has produced such a turn? It’s only possible, really, if Obama is desperate to get out of the corner he has painted himself into, and he painted himself into that corner by not pursuing diplomacy before war.

In the interview with Fox, Obama now talks about weeks before a strike, and the possibility of UN weapons inspections, etc. Quite a climb shift from “It’s so urgent that, eh, we’ll wait on Congress.”

Conservatives still don't appreciate--after five years of watching him in action--just what a low political thug Obama is. You've got to learn to think like him. Distasteful as that may be.

Remember it's all about HIM. He decided he needed to make these pinprick strikes to get himself out of the rhetorical corner he painted himself into. Like Our Bill, he has no qualms about playing "wag the dog" with "my military" to make himself look a bit less feckless.

Then, after telling us he didn't need congress' permission, his low cunning came up with the idea of putting congress (Republicans) on the spot by making them vote on it anyway. If they voted no, he proclaims he wanted to save Syrian children but those Republican meanies wouldn't let him. If they voted yes, he would blame all the unforeseen consequences on them when this limited engagement resulted in embassies and consulates burning and American citizens being kidnapped and murdered from Tunis to Jakarta--and maybe a few bombs going off stateside. Axelrod's gloating tweet of a few days ago gave the game away.

Unfortunately, in his infinite hubris, he failed to consider what a spot it would put the Democrats as well, what with angry town halls and calls to offices running one hundred-to-one against.

I saw the incoherent statements in Stockholm and St. Petersburg. Obama was rattled and incoherent. He is NOT in command of events.

Now, Kerry tosses off a possibility as an afterthought in a press conference and Sergei Lavrov batted it to Putin. Within hours Pooty picked up that ball and ran it to his friend Bashar. Now Obama has an offer he can't refuse. Almost certainly, Dingy Harry and the leading Dems have called 1600 Penn and told him he'd better take the deal if he knows what's good for him.

Let me see if I can get this straight. During an unscripted moment in the 2012 campaign Obama said something like, "If I see a whole bunch of chemical weapons being moved around in Syria, that's a red line". During the first year of his second term it becomes clear that the weapons aren't just being moved around but are killing people, so, after being constantly reminded of his red line statement, he decides he must act with a strike on Syria. Chaos erupts in the land. He goes off to golf. And then to Europe. Comes back to campaign for his Red Line Syrian War. Secretary of State John Kerry proposes, as a "rhetorical exercise" he claims, that if Assad were to turn over the weapons we'd call off the dogs of war. Up pops Vlad Putin who says, "Good Idea! Let's do it" and Assad agrees. Obama tells Chris Wallace on Fox this evening that it was his idea in the first place and he proposed it to Putin. Wow! Obama sure works in mysterious ways!

This administration is like the Carter Administration on steroids.

The level of stupidity at work here just boggles the mind.

Feckless from the git go! Commander Zero strikes again in his never ending efforts to bring down the U.S.A. Now he gives back to Putin the Russian bases in Syria. Putin is making Commander Zero look like a fool....rightly I believe. But, hey, the people of the U.S. really really really don't want another war.

I believe this is what the Brits call "muddling through".

Yes, but even muddling through the London blitz and hunkering down in the shelters at least had some consistency. This is just head-spinning chaos.

Not nearly as much "consistency" as one might wish. Of course, in writing the history, people like Churchill emphasized the heroics, and spun the lucky events as the result of brilliant foresight, and astute planning, when it was really all just chaos and confusion.

Don't sell Obama short, he is a master of spin, and if this works out, it will all be "part of the plan".
