That’s the question The Daily Beast’s Peter Beinart is asking:

The day after last week’s attack in Boston, David Sirota wrote a column for Salon entitled “Let’s Hope the Boston Marathon Bomber is a White American,” arguing that this would limit the resulting crackdown on civil liberties. At first, conservatives were appalled. Then, when police fingered the Tsarnaev brothers, they were triumphant. “Sorry, David Sirota, Looks Like Boston Bombing Suspects Not White Americans,” snickered a headline in Newsbusters. “Despite the most fervent hopes of some writers over at Salon.com,” added a blogger at Commentary, “the perpetrators of the Boston Marathon bombing are not ‘white Americans’.”

But the bombers were white Americans. The Tsarnaev brothers had lived in the United States for over a decade. Dzhokhar was a U.S. citizen. Tamerlan was a legal permanent resident in the process of applying for citizenship. And as countless commentators have noted, the Tsarnaevs hail from the Caucasus, and are therefore, literally, “Caucasian.” You can’t get whiter than that.

So why did conservatives mock Sirota for being wrong? Because in public conversation in America today, “Islam” is a racial term. Being Muslim doesn’t just mean not being Christian or Jewish. It means not being white.

I’m going to go out on a limb here, and guess that not one of the victims that day was thinking, “I hope I didn’t just get my leg blown off by a white American.” And nobody I read was talking at all about race — until Sirota made his stupid accusation. Then suddenly we had to talk about race, because Left needs to talk about something, anything, other than…

…Radical Islam.

Look, we know that when Sirota mentioned white men, what he really meant, what he was really hoping for, was that the killer was a white American Protestant. Catholic would be OK, too, just so long it he was a churchgoer. Better still if he was from Texas or one of those other low-sloping-forehead flyover states. What Sirota most emphatically did not mean by “white man” was a couple of dedicated jihadis from Russia’s violent southern fringe who happen to have white skin.

Race is mostly BS. Ideology is everything.

And the Tsarnaevs were purveyors of a murderous and destructive ideology, and one that finds aid and comfort in incensed racial ramblings of Sirota and Beinart.

"And as countless commentators have noted, the Tsarnaevs hail from the Caucasus, and are therefore, literally, “Caucasian.” You can’t get whiter than that."

Uhhhh...no.

Utter linguistic crapology.

Are Turks "white"? Mongols? Iranians?

The area has more than 40 different ethnic groups, many of them Middle Eastern, some Asian.

Taking the word "Caucasus" and then making the giant mental midget leap to "Caucasian" which then "equals as white as you can get"...is very typical leftist bullspit.

And when Sirota asked Santa for the bombers to be "white Americans"...he was NOT hoping for welfare recipient Sunni Muslims....who, for some reason, don't hang out at a local Tea Party rally...at least not for very long.

He wanted a country club Republican, Tea Party, Western European heritage, devout Christian. So, Beinart can take his disingenuous pap and peddle it to the fools who watch MSNBC to get their opinions handed to them on their Che Guevara decoder rings.

He will be, if the sissy boys and girls in D.C., have the courage to drain his blood! The easiest way to accomplish that IS, put his head in a bucket..

There was a "European Hate Graph" that I saw on the "inter nets" last century that professed to show how much the various countries of Europe hated one another and why. When it came to the Caucusus peoples pretty much every other country called them "Not Real Europeans". Except Russia who called them "No worse than real Europeans" or somesuch.

So the Chechens, Ingush, Ossetians, etc. are "white" when we need them to be and, otherwise, are not. Not that it really makes one whit of difference in the case of Joker and Tamar-the-lame.

"So why did conservatives mock Sirota for being wrong?"

Because we knew what he meant by his comment, when he said White American. He was seeking the heffalump. He was hoping for the ever-elusive, white, gap-toothed, redneck, teabagger who goes around blowing up people, so he, Sirota, can confirm the Narrative. Problem is, such a creature does not exist, but Sirota keeps believing in it, regardless.

Not only does he believe in it, but he thinks it is the archetype of "White American" (We're all like that, don'cha know?), despite never having seen even one example. The funny thing is, I bet Sirota is white, because only a Liberal White American could believe something so stupid.

I am pretty sure he thinks he saw one in Deliverance or some similar show.

I'm pretty sure everyone knew exactly the type of person Sirota was hoping for: the typical WASP male.

Let's not play coy. Why should we play semantics and help dig Sirota out of his hole?

Sirota is still hoping they turn out to have "I (heart) Sarah Palin" tattoos.

...and if Sirota really meant "white-white," he was definitely getting into racialist territory, implying that "white = violent."

Well, all I can say is that it doesn't appear the Tsarnaev's benefited at all from Sirota's "white privilege." I guess factors other than skin color might maybe possibly influence one's ability to succeed in America.
