Melissa Harris-Perry, the MSNBC weekend host who doesn’t believe your children belong to you, also doesn’t believe that the religious faith of the Tsarnaev brothers matters to the investigation of the Boston bombings.

Harris-Perry must have been visiting her home planet the last few days, so perhaps we can excuse her for being a little behind the breaking news curve. Still, wherever she calls home, don’t they get the New York Times or Washington Post?

Making the point that the Tsarnaev brothers’ Muslim faith at the moment bears little relevance to the investigation into the brothers’ decision to attack the Boston Marathon last week, MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry observed that Tsarnaev’s faith is about as relevant to the investigation right now as are Ben Affleck movies about violent events in Boston. Her panel guests agreed and added that Americans have to “otherize” violent actors in order to absolve themselves from responsibility for or connection to their violence.

“We don’t really know,” said Harris-Perry, throwing her hands up about the discussion into the Tsarnaev’s motives. “The younger brother, he’s getting all kinds of tweets from his friends. I think part of the answer is that it’s still an open question.”

“They don’t have the privilege of being anonymous – ‘they,’ speaking of people of color or other minorities – we don’t know yet, but we fill in the blanks,” said Georgetown University Professor Michael Eric Dyson. “We fill in the blanks with what makes us feel the most comfortable that this was an exceptional, extraordinary case that happened because they are this.”

“I keep wondering: is it possible that there would ever be a discussion like, ‘oh, this is because of Ben Affleck and the connection between Boston and movies about violence?’” Harris-Perry asked. “And, of course, the answer is ‘no.’”

“Given that they’re Chechen, given that they are literally Caucasian, our very sense of connection to them is this framed up notion of, like, Islam making them into something that is non-[unintelligible],” Harris-Perry continued.

“The point is that it’s important to say, ‘that is not us,” Dyson agreed. “We want to demonize the other. We have to distance it from the dominant culture.”

If I didn’t know that this surreal discussion was taking place on a major news network and was recorded, I never would have believed it.

Classic epistemic closure. The cocooning of academics and liberals regarding Islam and Islamist extremism specifically is what makes conversations like this possible. The “other,” by definition, is never wrong, never at fault, and always a victim. It doesn’t matter if violent Muslim extremists want to cut off our heads. Harris-Perry and her ilk — even if they acknowledge the truth in that — no doubt believe they have good reason to murder us.

I suppose it’s punishment for demonizing them so that we can distance them from our dominant culture.

She also said that the House of Representatives doesn't like having Obama as President so they do everything they can to not pass his agenda. It's not that they disagree with the politics, but that they don't like Obama...because...you know...

And, she wants the victims of Newtown to be prominently featured...because...you know...

This woman is as dumb as a dirt clod. 99.9% of gun violence does NOT take place in low crime communities. It takes place in HIGH crime communities.

But the Dumb as Dirt left won't talk about that...because...you know...

The words "common denominator" mean nothing to these people. They ignore the "trending" source of terrorism in the world the last 40 years and pretend there has been a trending academic argument about goth kids and mass killings instead to "prove" their point.

Somehow, they manage to smear the whole conversation with race, "privilege" and "one-drop" and that is telling. Why should we be surprised two fanatic career racial conspiracy buffs and racists like Harris-Perry and Dyson would come up with an empty argument over an event that has nothing to do with race?

When we get to the point where thousands of terrorists declare "Argo" as their political imperative and I can't enter a ballgame without being frisked because of Ben Affleck, then I'll simply accept that at face value.

These people talk about "demonizing the other" without a hint of irony. In fact, both Harris-Perry and Dyson make their house payments based on a professional demonization of people by their race that goes back years and years.

Harris-Perry hits the nail on the head without realizing it: this is not about alienation and no one is saying so. Goth kids and teen angst aren't the reason airports around the world have such strict procedures for getting on a plane. When is obvious actually obvious?

Nothing is obvious in the crazy world of bigotry where the new racists have simply transposed the "greedy Jew" onto the "cluelessly racist white."

Harris-Perry said America's reaction to 9/11 was "typical" in that we needed a "racial enemy." I'd say that describes her own depraved reaction to the world she lives in more than anyone else. Like the Nazi Party before her, Harris-Perry's intellectual space is one of "cherchez le Jew," with one slight change in the play's cast.

Why aren't people like this laughed at? I mean openly, publicly ridiculed? It's one thing to respectfully listen to someones opinion, even agreeing that they have a right to their opinion. But we have a right to laugh in their face as well.
Not only am I tired of these idiots they are a threat to the security and future of the Nation.
Harris-Perry would say I'm just an old white man 'otherizing' those who don't agree with me. No, I'm a rational citizen laughing at the jackass who thinks she's royalty.

This whole statement about having absolve ourselves by otherizing him reminds of something I got told/taught in a diversity seminar. It was some claptrap about how whites always get personally offended by when whites in general are criticized as though we take it personally as though the criticism are leveled directly at us because we act like individuals.

I snorted and said "How are we supposed to take it? First off, we are raised to be individuals, not a group, and secondly, why would you think criticizing a group with broad stereotypes wouldn't be offensive to someone sitting there who is a member of that group whether the criticism applies to me or not?"

We aren't otherizing Tsaernaev. We're treating him like an individual. Sure, he's a white guy, but he's one who made all the wrong choices and now he's an enemy of most everyone who is an American.

I still find myself amazed that airheads like Ms. Harris-Perry are able to find employment of any kind, but especially as a broadcast journalist. I retract that. MSNBC is a perfect fit.

Harris-Perry is one of the many, many reasons why MSNBC should change its name to MS 'N' ANDY.

She say their religion has nothing to do with this...but "given that they’re Chechen, given that they are literally Caucasian", does? What does being Caucasian have to do with it? It's so surreal they have to invent new words like "otherize" to describe what they mean. (I think that's a dog whistle/codeword for "conservative")
