Investigators believe they have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, a source who has been briefed on the investigation told CNN’s John King.

[Breaking news update at 12:52 p.m. Wednesday ]

“Substantial progress” has been made in the criminal investigation into Monday’s marathon bombings, a Boston law enforcement source told CNN’s John King. “This is significant,” the source said.

The Boston Globe is reporting the same thing.

The Globe offers more detail atop their home page, reporting that “Authorities have an image of a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene.”

Update:  Ace notes that 4chan posters have put some images together that show a man with a black backpack, holding an object in the shape of a pressure cooker, standing amid the marathon spectators.

Update: CNN’s John King says a suspect has been arrested. Suspect described as “dark-skinned male” says @JohnKingCNN, adding was given further description but won’t inflame tensions by repeating.

Also on CNN, Fran Townsend reports that an individual has been arrested, based on evidence in two different images that authorities have been examining.

Update: Media confusion, as CNN and Fox report an arrest, NBC and CBS report no arrest has been made. Now CNN on air is walking things back a bit. It’s the mainstream media and a developing story — caution is always advised.

Update: The FBI is pushing back, insisting that no arrest has been made at all.

I've seen the photos of the guy in the white cap carrying the black backpack. (And the guy he was talking to in the blue)

Don't know if this is them...there is some rumor flying around the internet about a Saudi national who had family at Gitmo and in Al Qaeda.

Neither one looks like a "white Hispanic"...whatever that is...but CNN is apologizing for calling the suspect "dark skinned". Our terrorist threats are now going to be "re-color schemed".

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job Ive had. Last Monday I got a new Alfa Romeo from bringing in $7778. I started this 9 months ago and practically straight away started making more than $83 per hour. I work through this link, Mojo50.com

Yes, and within minutes of the bombs detonating, Big Sis shoved her way to the cameras to assure us that none of this was connected to any sort of, uh, grand plot. Just a lone wolf or two out there, folks. Go on back to your favorite t.v. shows. The Department of Homeland Security has us covered.

What the authorities have done so far, in terms of public relations, is to confuse, misinform and frighten. Not good at all.

And not, I'm afraid, unintentional.

Agreed, Artghost. My feeling is that it is somehow connected to the release of the Saudi national, now back home after frantic discussions between the Saudi gov't and Obama Admin. Mighty fishy, if you ask me. But I know they want us to shut up...and I truly appreciate that. :)

The really sad and tragic part of all this is: this horendous crime seems to have turned our MSM into nothing more than attention seeking fools that need to be taken out behind the woodshed and have their bottoms tanned.

CBS is now CERTAIN that it's a WHITE MALE, carrying a backpack and wearing a baseball cap.

Brian Ross has made a citizen's arrest of Fred Savage of the Wonder Years based on this information.

At least Romo is a better Webster Dictionary image for White Hispanic than old G.Z. himself, although George did look a lot like Zaccarias Mousaoui during the interrogation video at the Sanford PD.

That's why CNN's motto is: "The most trusted name In The News". (They're just making sure CNN gets its name into the news, regardless of merit.)

Ed Driscoll at PJM is quoting WSJ...materials very similar to those used in Al Qaeda manual by a Texas soldier who was sentenced to life in prison for trying to blow up his fellow soldiers.
