Some members of Congress are taking trips this recess. The 80-year-old ranking member on the House Ways and Means Committee just took a trip down the aisle.
“I wanted to share this joyful news with you,” Rep. Sandy Levin (D-Mich.) tweeted this morning, linking to a Detroit Free Press article about his wedding at the end of July. With recess, they were able to celebrate with family at the congressman’s vacation home on Martha’s Vineyard.
Levin was widowed in 2008 when his wife of 50 years, Vicki, passed away. The congressman set up an award fund for child development studies in Vicki’s name, with the help of his late wife’s friend and Pennsylvania State University psychology professor Pamela Cole.
Cole, 61, was also widowed.
“I don’t think it was something expected but we had a lot of common interests and we both suffered severe loss,” Levin said. “It was a combination of shared memories and shared love.”
The wedding announcement read: “In sharing together the losses of each of our beloved spouses, we came to discover strong common interests, and love for one another.”
