All Those Bad Things Mitt Romney Said About the Olympics in England Are True
I’ll tell you what’s “disconcerting” David Cameron, Boris Johnson, and all the Fleet Street twits who came down on Mitt Romney for using that word to describe preparations for the Olympics.
“Disconcerting” is giving into blatant hate and bigotry.
The Lebanese judo team at the 2012 London Olympics refused to practice next to the Israeli one on Friday afternoon, and a makeshift barrier was erected to split their gym into two halves.
According to several Hebrew sports sites, the two teams were scheduled to use the same gym and mats at London’s new ExCeL center for their final preparations. However, the delegation from Lebanon would not train in view of the Israeli team, and insisted some sort of barrier be placed between them.
Organizers accepted the Lebanese coach’s demand to separate the teams, erecting a barrier so that the Lebanese team wouldn’t see the Israeli one.
The incident was the first political one between Israel and other countries during the 2012 Games, which don’t formally get under way until Friday evening’s opening ceremony. It happened only days after the Iranian delegation head stated his nation’s athletes would compete with Israelis, a statement which was quickly rejected by Tehran, which tried to suggest that his true sentiment was lost in translation.
If the Lebanese don’t want to practice next to the Israelis send them home. Why enable their hate by giving in to their demands? Talk about a gaffe: the IOC and London Olympic organizers have managed to spit in the face of the Olympic ideal, give in to haters, and insult the Israelis — all in one afternoon. Makes Mitt Romney look like the soul of discretion.
Ah, if only solving the problems of the world were so simple — erect a barrier between the Israelis and Hamas, or Hezbollah, or any number of Arab anti-Semitic bigots who want to destroy the state of Israel.
Shame is an emotion that appears to be beyond the London Olympic organizers and the IOC, who apparently acceded to the Lebanese demands. They refuse to offer a moment of silence during the opening or closing ceremonies in memory of those dead Israeli athletes, murdered by Palestinian terrorists in 1972. Now, they give in to the blatant bigotry of the Lebanese and put a barrier up between the two judo teams.
That’s what I call the real Olympic spirit.

Every time I switched over to MSNBC and CNN that’s all they were talking about, nothing on the economy. Romney’s statement was nothing compared to Obama’s “Maldives” double-gaffe of calling it a different name that wasn’t even the correct pronunciation.
The Olympics giving in to the demands of the Lebanese? Wow, if they fold to the demands of that “powerhouse” team, I’d hate to see what they would do if the Russians didn’t want to play with the Israelis? They probably would have shut down the entire facility, if that’s what the Russians wanted. But the Lebanese get a tiny baricade, to match their tiny minds. This Olympics debacle in London shows the Brits for what they still are: Arab loving and Jew-hating. A shame – in many ways, our British cousins are pretty fine people. I remember how Adolf Hitler refused to shake the hand of Owens after that “black” beat 4 times his team of “supermen”. The snubbing, no insulting of Jewish participants in the Olympics, is a bad sign. I’m going to go out on a limb and say both men snubbed Jesse Owens. Indeed, I remember watching a documentary on the Berlin Games and Adolf Hitler didn’t look too pleased that a black man was beating his “ubermensch”.
What is in a “snub”. Owens statements about FDR’s “snub” are true without doubt. They reflect the racial prejudices of America of that time. But I see no evidence that FDR reacted to the victories of Owens in the way Hitler did. Maybe I have viewed too many documentary films in German in Germany over 30+ years, some of which deal with the 1936 Olympics and Hitler’s goals. (By the way, the stadium, rushed to completion by Speer, is still standing or sitting where it did then. It may be the only survival of Hitler-architecture.)

Well, I will reply to myself. The theme of the article we are now commening on has to do with the correctness of Romney’s reservations about the Olympics in England. Well, an hour ago I opened up “Die Welt”, a so-called newspaper of the right, and found an article whose title I freely must translate as: “Romney Omits Nothing From Putting His Foot in the Mouth. The Republican Insults the Britains On His First Foreign Visit”. The Mayor of London publically called out Romney and received from 100,000 yelling voices “Yes, yes, yes”. The article went on to even identify Romney as an “American Borat” and suggested he should have stayed home. The tone of the article was as gleeful against Romney as a previous article was worshipful for Obama during his Berlin speech. Up to this moment I have not heard nor read a peep about the Olympic “snub”, viz., “insult” of Israel and Jews.
Did this “conservative” newspaper even note the Lebanese insult of the Israeli team? No, no, no!!! Some weeks ago Günther grass published a diatribe against Israel both in substance and in form. It is hard not to believe that Grass’s SS phase of his life had not got the best of him. Such mumblings from Grass did not bother me. I am used to them. What bothered me was the fact that some “informed” news people and various prominent persons, after having criticized the form of Grass’s insults to Israel, accepted the essence of the substance. Even one prominent person was a a left-wing Jew (perhaps an Israeli ) who delegitimized Israel’s concerns. That reveals something for worry.
Let me describe briefly how the German press reports about America. I can watch CNN Europe a time “t” and wait 60 minutes to hear or see it in German tv. If an in depth analysis is beamed to Germany from America by a German reporter, he sounds as if he had just read the NYT or dined with MSNBC “reporters” (sic). I have tried a few times to call up a tv station and complain and correct. What usually happens is TV Station A says the report came from TV Station B and B refers me to C. In other words, I get nowhere.
I tell this tale of woe because I take it not only to be serious that the Olympics refused a one-minute silence re the 1972 massacre of the Israeli team and has now permitted a most profound insult of Israel, but also, worse, to be indicative of building public opinions detrimental to Israeli and American (not Obamain) interests. The Islamic influence is so great in Britain that even anti-Semitic insults are ignored there, and not reported here or, in the case of Romney, distorted–and with joyous malice of forethought.
Please just consider the comparison: Hitler effectively insulted in 1936 the “Negro” race and, as one person noted, FDR too in his way snubbed Owen. Now in 2012, profound insults are directed as Jews of Israel (and derivatively at Jews per se) and the press here in Germany, yes GERMANY, remains silent, Britains yell “Yes, yes, yes” and German tv markets the games, almost as a spiritual event. I hold, alas, that such behavior portends a moral disease in the West. Fun and games while the West burns. I must reply to myself again as I cannot connect with my last reply to myself. Last report on news in Germany on the Lebanese slight of the Israeli team before I sink into a delightful illusion that all is well. I just went to a German bakery. I had a conversation about the Olympics with a sales lady, middle aged, quite uneducated, very nice, hard worker and who alway manages to sell me more “Rosinenbrot” than is good for my health. The woman had heard nothing! No surpise. So I informed her of the matter and her reply startled me. Re the insult the lady asked: “Ist das schlecht?”–”Is that bad?”. It was a puzzled and genuine inquiry. She lacked the tools to evaluate the meaning of the event. German children learn in school about the Nazi period and there are tv documentaries everyday on the period. The lady was aware of the Nazies and their cruelties. Nevertheless, she just could not relate Hitler’s racially insulting misuse of the Olympics with the racially insultory misuse of the Olypics to demean Israelis. That disturbs me greatly!!! The lady was no bigot, no “Nazi bitch”, just lacking awareness of the Islamic threat to Israel. Furthermore, just where could she obtain said info and sensible commentaries on the info? To date I must report that such a dear, sweet, working class German has no place to look. This small datum is quite not insignificant if it reflects a general public opinion and the indifference of the press. I hope I am wrong.

I look forward to more comments by you. Having lived in France for quite sometime I was astounded by the definition of anti- semitism there.. Every time there was an anti Semitic incident ie Jewish kids beaten up on soccer field by Muslim kids…. it was reported as kids from the suburbs attacking kids from the city. The banlieu was nothing if it wasn’t home to the bulk of the Arab youth and Muslim population. To so many in France -even my Jewish friends-If it doesn’t look like the anti semitism of the Nazis it isn’t anti-semitism. So I am not surprised at all that nary a mention was made of the Lebanese request and the IOC’s complicity in granting the request. As a Christian I am always amazed and frankly frightened at the continued blind eye and deaf ear when racism is directed at Jews by everyone Jews and non Jews alike. If we can let our guard down for that then we have left ourselves open for history to be repeated. Everyone seems to feel safe when the Jews are the victims but it is a false sense of security. To allow bigotry and hatred go unchallenged for one group is to let it live to attack us all.

Jesse Owens himself denied that Hitler snubbed him. He described Hitler as having “acted correctly”, ie, Hitler waved at him, thereby acknowledging his existence, upon Owens’ victory. (Toland’s Adolf Hitler, p393, papaerback edition.) Owens went on to describe criticism of Hitler for “snubbing him” as in “bad taste”, presumably because it was untrue rather than because of any great fondness Owens had for Hitler or his beliefs.
Anonymous, I apolize for disagreeing again with you “myth” statement. I am not trying to pick on you. However, I just watched 10 minutes ago in German tv a documentary on Jesse Owens and the Olympics of 1936. FDR did not send Owens a note of congradulations for his three wins and, once Owens returned to America, FDR did not invite him into the WH because of fears of losing votes in the South. (Keep in mind whom Obama invites!). This constitutes without doubt a “snub”, and Owens used the word himself. But, you are dead wrong about the events in Berlin. There not only was a “Neger” “snubbed” by an enraged Hitler, but a direct “insult” of two American Jew runners in the relay ensued. I will explain.
Hitler, as the document notes, was furious and the facial distortions of Hitler’s face were eplicitly disgnated as a product of his anger (and embarrassment). For Hitler the Olympic feats of the “Herrenrasse” was endangered because Owens was a popular hit, even amoung Germans watching the games. Owens became a bit friendly with a German runner whom he had beat. The next day that runner was called by Hess and told not to embrass a “Neger”. When one considers how popular Owens was as a crowd pleaser, the “subbing” of Owen by Hitler is evident to see. But that is not all. The American relay team (favorite to win) had two Jewish runners. Pressure was put on the American Olympic authorities not to allow the two Jews runners to participate. The American committee bowed down and replaced the Jewish runners with two black runners, one of whom was Owens. In this way Owens came to his 4th medal–so to speak, on the back of an insult of Jews (no intention of Owens). Wow! Why “wow!”?
The Lebanese very recent denigration of Jews because they did not want to have to see Israelis while their atheletes were training in the same training hall outdoes, in my opinion, in depth of insulting even Hitler’s “snub”. The Jewish team was not just subbed, it was intentionally reduced to a version of “unwertes Leben” (= “humans not worthy of living”–Nazi jargon). The insult did not imply death to the Israelis, but it did imply lowering the value of Jews to “humans not worthy of being seen” or to beings, whose very being seen is an abomination. And the Olymic authorities allowed the act. I suggest that, what is an abomination to see, will soon because an object of cleansing. And the reaction of the German press? To this moment I have neither heard nor seen any mention of the incident. In the American MSM? With this type of devaluation of Jews, it appears to me the Germany (not to speak of Obama’s America) should have withdrawn the German team in protest. Instead the press mocked Romney. Tonight the games go on as tv coverage is complete. I am watching a documentary about the fall of Rome. I hope such a fall does not presage another fall.

Details of the American authorities in charge of the American contingency at the Olympics of 1936 and their specific views of and relations to the Nazi authorities exceed any detailed knowledge on my part. I do know from the documentary on Owens last night in German tv that said authorities gave into pressure from the Nazies and excluded top-line Jewish runners from the relay team (thereby enabling Owens to win his forth medal). Whatever the “true” opinions of said authorities, objectively they gave into anti-Jewish pressure and, morally speaking, should not have done so. This “success” was in my opinion an enormous insult of Jews. Better to be beat by a team having (Neger)–Nazies held blacks for benighted–than onw with Jews. The objection to training in the same hall with Jews is experienced as so an abomination, the a barrier is constructed so as not to offend the sensibilities of the “Muslims”. The OIC has abdicated any responsibility for what the Olympic Games were always supposed to be about, and that is, peaceful competition and sportsmanship among the finest athletes of the earth, pitting their physical prowess against each other, coupled with the joyful appreciation of the world’s spectators, politics be damned. Instead, we are watching this contest among giants denigrated, soured, and shrunken by a cadre of wizened, bureaucratic pygmies who would run out of breath merely walking from one sidewalk cafe to another.
If the Lebanese (or any Muslim) team are afraid to demonstrate their training and fitness in front of the Israelis (although I suspect this is the fault of the political/ideological officers, and not the athletes themselves), let them go home where their abilities cannot be questioned. Sorry, but Romney’s gratuitously insulting comment cannot be defended. There is plenty to criticize about Britain, which has been struggling to extract itself from the dead hand of socialism since 1979, but what Romney said had nothing to do with that. Leave the alienating of our only major military ally to Obama.

Romney remarked on what he’d seen in the British press which reflected the same concerns. That was pretty clear, unless you think he’d been doing minute inspections. The response to that has verged on hysterics.

America only turned up in WWI in late 1917 for a war which began in 1914 and which was all over bar the shouting before the USA really got involved. In WWII you only joined in 1941 a war which began in 1939 and only did so because Japan attacked YOU and Germany declared war on YOU in support of its Japanese allies.
Oh and in case you were wondering the RAF saved Britain in 1940 and the RUSSIANS beat the German Army not America or Britain. 80% of the German army was in Russia not Western Europe.

You are correct about all of your facts except the one about Bletchly Park. At BP they mostly only decoded the Enigma post. The Americans broke the Japanese Naval and diplomatic codes themselves, Most notebly just before the infamous Japanese Embassy meeting the same day the Japanese attached Pearl Harbor and breaking the cose that allowed them to ambush the Japanes at Midway, which was the turning point to the Pacific war.
I am not denigrating the Bletchley Park effort. It was superb. Just don’t want you to claim too much credit for Britain’s part in the allied victory. Every participant contributed what it could and the war would not ave been won without the unique contributions of all of the participants.
I know this story isn’t really about wars, but like all discussion, some is false. As for why the Americans stayed out of WWI until 1917, the questions is why should it have gotten in? The Americans didn’t see Europe’s affairs as its own. If the Europeans wanted to beat each other up what responsibility was it of America’s? Even WWII: the American electorate was not politically ready for another world war and FDR cleverly maneuvered into that war.

Without the Americans Germany would’ve won WW I. As for WW II, it’s true the Soviet Union did the most damage to Germany. But to say that without context is completely false.
Without American military aid, and the threats which stretched German defenses all over Western Europe as well as allied bombing in which the U.S. played a major role, Germany may well have been able to fight the Soviet Union to a stand still if it had been able to concentrate its full attention to the East.
Take all the German divisions from North Africa and Southern and Western Europe, and a German air force not written down by fighting bombing raids, and I very much doubt the Soviet Union would’ve beaten Germany. The Soviet Union was on its last legs as far as manpower; they didn’t recruit women because they liked the idea.

You really need to review this piece of information you gave. First, there has been no “WWIII.” Second, your causalty numbers are incomprehensible. Are you giving a range of numbers? If so, you need some hyphens. If not, your numbers suggest casualties in the billions and trillions. Don’t think so.
Some of those numbers are purely incorrect. For example, US casualties are more properly a bit over 475,000, and we did suffer some civilian casualties.

Expressing an opinion on a website isn’t going to hurt the Olympics, much less “high jack” [sic] them.
And it was the Olympic Committee that allowed the nastiest politics to intrude upon sport, by catering to Muslim bigotry, and by a dishonest double-standard on commemorating victims of mass murders. (No to Jews — that’s “political”; okay to victims of 7/7 and “wars” — evidently not political.)

What I saw of the opening was horrible. Now I didn’t tune in early, but what was all the lame brain kissing and dancing and whatever. Didn’t see the nurses or the babies. I thought the torch was well done. OK, I liked Jude. I thought the US costumes were stiff and not fun like most of the rest of them.
Why didn’t they shoe some of their country, the Scots, the Welsh, the Irish and even the English culture?
I also thought it was disgusting tht they wouldn’t give 1 moment of silence for the horrible murder of the Israelis. I tell you the US is the last bastion for the jews, but if they keep obama in they kiss their futures bye, bye.

I’m with you. I thought the opening ceremony was horrible. What has happened to class, dignity, and elegance? This event was just a bunch of people jumping around and loud, uninspiring music. A terrible showing. At one point, the camera was on Queen Elizabeth and she was dealing intently with a hangnail or something on a finger. Cameron’s wife looked absolutely bored with the whole thing. I’m sure that older Brits are embarrassed by this mess that was supposed to showcase their country. But then, the Britain of today is not the classy, dignified, and elegant Britain of the past. So sad to see a great country and culture killing itself.
I am an anglophile at heart, love the British contribution to music over the last 50 years, regularly pine for 18 holes @ The Belfry, and think Monty Python skits to be some of the most brilliant comedy ever produced in the English language.
That being said, I found the opening ceremonies an apropo metaphor for the once great British nation. It was boring, politically correct to the point of cliche, and never rose to inspirational. The only thing missing that would have logically furthered the opening’s meme was an ode to British cuisine.

The British government and a large part of the population seems to have become as intolerant as any dictatorship; as weak and afraid as Hitler became and as disgustingly anti-British and self-loathing as the most miserable and unfortunate individuals that find themselves outcast by society.

I don’t really know if the UK today is generally anti-Semitic or not, but it would explain the curious way they accept Muslims. From my point of view, Muslims clearly despise the native Brit culture and only go there to escape being sold as antiques on Ebay in their own miserable hovels.

Read “The Second World War” and see his comment about going to bed after Pearl Harbor knowing he could sleep the sleep of “the saved and thankful” because America was now fighting on Britain’s side.
Britain was a great country once. Too many of their best and bravest died in the Western Front meatgrinder and it’s never been the same country since. The men who took back the Altmark, who beat the cream of the Japanese Army at Kohima and Imphal, who beat the Germans twice at El Alamein, and who manned the destroyers and corvettes that won the War of the Atlantic, they were the last gasp of Great Britain. What has happened since is steady decline, first into socialism, then into wholesale multiculti surrender.
Winston Churchill, Lord Alanbrooke, Field Marshal Montgomery and Field Marshal Slim would all be absolutely appalled at what Britain is now. If the Olympics management had any class, they would throw out any team that makes such unsportsmanlike demands. You are right! Romney absolutely does look better every day, never more so than in Piers Morgan’s extended interview with both Romneys two days ago in London.
Among other things, there was a lengthy exchange about all the calls for increased gun control in light of the Colorado shootings. Romney resolutely held his ground and reiterated his absolute support for the Second Amendment, saying at one point that we had more than enough gun control laws in this country and that he was absolutely opposed to putting any more of them on the books. He was very impressive. He acquitted himself with dignity and finesse, and looked and sounded like the de facto leader of the free world. I was greatly reassured. (On a lighter note, Mrs. Romney was warm, elegant, and charming–an American First Lady we can all be unreservedly proud of.)
There is nothing wrong with practicing apartheid. Folks with judgment practice it every day. If someone with revolting body odor sits down next to you in a public place, you’ll move away. That is apartheid. If you live in a gated community for your safety – that is apartheid. Other stupid, pollitical, racist things happened this week at the Olympics. I was watching the opening ceremonies on Canadian TV, and when the Algerian athletes entered the stadium, the announcer said that the team was awaiting a decision from the Algerian government as to whether they would allow their athletes to compete against Israeli athletes in individual events.
When the Argentian athletes entered the stadium, the announcer said that the president of Argentina was boycotting the games in protest over the outcome of the Falkland Islands war 30 years ago.
Nutty, idiotic, adolescent, and hateful people are in charge of us in every country in the world. They call themselves “world leaders.” God help us.
The great thing about these announcements happening during the Olympics is it shows the world how backward, hateful, and childish those countries truly are.
I, for one, am quite tired of hearing how the Brits a4re the “Elder Statesmen” compared to us. Yes, OK. Which is when I view the world around us, with the realization that the bulk of those places we appear to be perpetually in conflict with are all former British colonies. Perhaps you will be so kind as to explain how it was our obligantion to enter WWI. it started due to the system of treaties and alliances that the European Powers had been building for most of the XIX century and was set off by an Austrian power play in the Balkans. We won the war because the combatants bled each other white and we were the ones with the industry and the man power to continue. You are correct about it being all over but the shouting when we entered in 1917. However, if we had not entered Germany probably would have won.
WWII, the Anglo-Frenc Alliance had at least 6 years that they could have simply rolled over the Germans at minimal cost. As late as September 1939 an all out attack against the Rhineland while most of the German army was in Poland would have been the end of the Nazi state. Poland, Czechcoslovaka, and the Baltic states were NOT American allies and were not guaranteed by America. France was seen as having the best army in the world and Britian had a very good navy and air force as well as a huge man power pool with the Commonwealth to raise an army. In 1939 the American army had 8 divisions and was considered to be just behind the Dutch. What exactly were we supposed to do? We did save you and it was in our interest to do so but after the failures of your leadership put you in a position to need saving in the first place.

The Olympics are politicized and have become the sports version of the United Nations. I think the whole contest should be abolished. R omney was definitely correct about his view of the London Olympics. They can’t even fill all the seats aand security is really iffy.
. If private sources or governments want to fund games, fine. But governments which are fiscally shaky should not be allowed to commit public funds to them. There should be more strict rules governing the competitors. Athletic ability may be low on the totem pole. Training sites and trainers should be regulated as should be the clothing and sports paraphanalia used by the athletes. The games are really a joke.
