Thirty-one senators signed on to a letter by Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) opposing ratification of the United Nations’ Law of the Sea Treaty, potentially dooming the pact that opponents say compromises U.S. sovereignty.
In the letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), the senators acknowledge Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry’s (D-Mass.) ratification push and vow to vote against the treaty.
“By its current terms, the Law of the Sea Convention encompasses economic and technology interests in the deep sea, redistribution of wealth from developed to undeveloped nations, freedom of navigation in the deep sea and exclusive economic zones which may impact maritime security, and environmental regulation over virtually all sources of pollution,” the Republicans wrote.
“To effect the treaty’s broad regime of governance, we are particularly concerned that United States sovereignty could be subjugated in many areas to a supranational government that is chartered by the United Nations under the 1982 Convention,” they added. “Further, we are troubled that compulsory dispute resolution could pertain to public and private activities including law enforcement, maritime security, business operations, and nonmilitary activities performed aboard military vessels.”
Nebraska Republican Mike Johanns was the latest to sign on, leaving the treaty — which needs two-thirds of the Senate for ratification — just three votes away from being blocked.
Heritage Action is targeting Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Thad Cochran (R-Miss), Bob Corker (R-Tenn), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) to similarly secure promises of a “no” vote.
McCain, however, has supported the treaty along with Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine).

Effing McCain! He’s a disgrace.
One more reason we need a war on rinos(after the election of course)
I haven’t studied this issue a lot but input to my decision-making database from those whose judgement I esteem highly are all opposed to ratification so this is good news.
Come on, Sen Ayotte don’t go establishment on us. join the ranks of other warrior states(wo)men that are desperately needed these days: DeMint, Bachmann, West, Issa etc.
You know what? As concerned as I am about the explosively dangerous situation in Israel-the lid is about to pop off in the region ! – I am equally concerned about the fate of the US.
Both fates are inextricably intertwined,as they are the last two bastions of freedom and liberty in this bleeding world. Whither one goes, so too does the other.
It is for this reason that my blog is based upon Zionist & Conservative issues, and fast paced events pertaining to both. It is also for this reason that I featured a six fire alarm commentary, entitled ‘Washington Very Close to Subsuming the Constitutional Right to Bear Arms….Straight Into Thuggish UN Arms’ (referencing the Law of the Sea too).
Here’s the link -http://adinakutnicki.com/2012/07/09/washington-very-close-to-subsuming-the-constitutional-right-to-bear-arms-straight-into-thuggish-un-arms-commentary-by-adina-kutnicki-15/
It will be a huge relief if this freedom destroying power grab goes up in flames, as should all the rest of their machinations! Faster….faster…..
mcmoron has used up his POW goodwill.
Retire you demented old bastid.
Two of these fools are MY senators. They pay no attention to their constituents. Alexander and Corker – menaces to freedom.
The mass majority of our so called elected officials have sold themselves to the globalist for decades. McCain and others like him are more interested serving them, then “We the People”. Obviously the Sea Treaty is an attack on Americans soveriegn rights no differently than the Small arms treaty Obama and Hillary will sign at the end of the month. All this favors the financial progrssive elites and their quest for world domination.
The Law of the Sea Treaty is incredibly important to ensure that US can remain competitive in a global environment that is fraught with uncertainty. We have entered into multiple international treaties since the founding of the nation, always when they are in our best interests. This Treaty is in our best interests and those who oppose it do so for some vague “sovereignity” grounds. Research the issue, find out for yourself. Not signing up to this Treaty is simply wrongheaded.
Et tu?
Signing the treaty will give a simple majority in the U.N. the ability to take U.S. national waters for their own benefit, tax U.S. owned vessels passing through currently international water by extending the currently accepted territory lines, and a host of other bull. Read the bloody thing.
True Blue, here is the link to the document: http://www.un.org/Depts/los/convention_agreements/texts/unclos/closindx.htm
Please quote the sections that support what you assert. The issues that led to Reagan rejecting the treaty were addressed (written out) nearly twenty years ago. The US Navy and US corporations alike support approval of the treaty. I’m on the side of the US Navy. Who’s side are you on?
Whose US Navy, GWBs or Comrade Obama’s? Sorry, I know what happens to people in a position to take a position on legislation at a change of administration. Anybody with a speaking role in the Navy today is an Obama toady.
Brutus,
The way I read it, the Treaty “strongly urges” (and with permitting authority, its Seabed Authority will prevail) that ocean resource developers give their less fortunate potential competitors their proprietary technology as well as give a big hunk of the actual identified resource to the Authority. Sounds anti-competitive to me.
The whole thing is a globaloney grab for funds and power. Both of my Senators support it; consequently I will support neither of them.
Here is the Treaty. Form your own opinion. As I wear a US navy T-shirt as I write this now. Its what this binding agreement will morph into is what I am worried about. And since when does the UN and the bankers who control it care about soveriegn rights of the US.
The US Navy as a whole does NOT support this treaty.
Sorry – forgot to paste link

Is there any way to blanket t e conservative blogs in these states with this info so that the constituents of these states are aware of what the hell THEIR Senators are doing to them! Vote ALL the bastards and bitches out.
we are way past time needing a mandatory retirement age for ALL gov. ee’s. mccain was also one of the cosponsors of the bill giving the krazy kenyan the power of life and eath over American citizens. i agree, he used up his heroism pass long ago.
Divest from the U.N., an organization that takes from the west and gives to the third world that hates us. One world order is what the Islamists want and we are helping our own dismantling along!
Well, I just wrote my senator and requested she vote against this UN power grab.
I anticipate a computerized response any time now.
What a joke.
As I understand it, Obama won’t allow offshore drilling for oil, but the Law of the Sea Treaty will. It will not only allow the UN super committee it creates to drill offshore of the US but to keep the profits, as well.
Law of the Sea Treaty is just more socialist share-the-wealth crap. Only this time the US has to share its wealth off shore w/the rest of world — especially landlocked countries.
Obama wants to be President of the world. I say, after November, make him Secretary General of the UN. And, then, throw the UN out of the country.
The treaty is a disaster on many levels. Our territorial waters belong to us, and no one else. Our mineral resources belong to the USA!!! Landlocked countries, who have no “skin in the game”, will have access to our royalty money meant for the US treasury. We can be outvoted, at the mercy of UN tribunals. You want North Korea, Iran, and Venezuela to have access to our royalty money? Do you want Kyoto? You’ll get it with LOST.
And LOST won’t deter China from bullying its neighbors. They’re doing it now and those countries bordering the South China Sea are signatories of LOST. A piece of paper will not deter China!!!!
EXACTLY!
The US Navy has successfully preserved and protected its navigational rights and freedoms for 200 years without it. Why the big push now? Is there some
EXACTLY!
The US Navy has successfully preserved and protected its navigational rights and freedoms for 200 years without it. Why the big push now? Is there something we need to know
I tell you the truth (as I see it)–the United States will jeopardize the greatest opportunity it will have in this present lifetime of all concerned if it allows this treaty to become precedent.
How much did McCain sell out for to support this UN power grab?
Why is Portman being considered for Veep if he hasn’t already come out against this abomination? This is not making me feel better about Romney.
“Only 3 more needed.”
How the Eff hard can it be to find enough votes to block this abomination?!? You only need 34! Out of 100! How many damned internationalists do we have in the damned Senate, anyway?
We are the mighty United States. We rule the damned seas. We do not have to give the damned UN jack! What the Hell good is all this naval might, if they can sneak away what we have via some quasi-legal shenanigans? If there is something good for us in this treaty, then we can just take it, if we so desire, and there is not a damned thing anyone else can do about it.
And it’s not like other nations will abide by the treaty, anyway. Only we will. Don’t believe me? Just look at how often we catch the fishing vessels of other nations in our waters. This is just more unilateral disarmament on our part.
How many internationalists in the Senate? A lot. Which is why I’ve said for a couple of decades that we need to repeal the 17th amendment as a means to help restore federalism. I fear that I am the lone voice in the wilderness on this issue.
We neede nothing from the un! However, obama and hillary are in it up to their eyeballs. I think clinton wants to be un chief while hillary is the US pres.
Make sure you are all registered and ready to vote.
neede – need
I guess it’s late!
If any of you are in thier district – better get busy!
Heritage Action is targeting Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Thad Cochran (R-Miss), Bob Corker (R-Tenn), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) to similarly secure promises of a “no” vote.
I’ll call them, but as far as writing they usually don’t accept emails from out of their state.
6. Everett R Littlefield
How about faxing them with the story?
I plan to fax so for anyone here are the fax #’s:
Ayotte: 202 224 4952
Cochran: 202 224 9450
Corker: 202 228 0566
Enzi: 202 228 0359
Graham: 202 224 0359
Kirk: 202 228 4611
Portman: 202 228 0908
McCain: 202 228 2862
Just a short note I think would go a long way if they get a lot.
I predict that now amount of phone calls from us Arizona Hobbits will sway McCain.
Write the named senators and urge them to vote against the Law of the Sea Treaty. We are losing our sovereignty right and left to the UN including Agenda 21. This must stop and it is up to us to notify the people who can vote it down in order to ensure our freedom.
I just emailed my Republican senator here in OH, Portman, assuming trying to convince the Democrat senator would just be a waste of time.
Just sent Rob Portman, OH Senator an email encouraging him to vote to not support the treaty in any way, shape, or form.
If you have a Senator that hasn’t weighed in on this issue, please email and phone asap with your viewpoint. If you have a Senator that supports the treaty, please email him/her with your dissappointment in their actions and your promise to campaign against him/her in their future Senate races.
I think if Portman has to be persuaded to vote no, and if Romney picks him, I have to wonder where Romney stands; after all, Soros did say that a Romney presidency wouldn’t be that much different than an Obama win when speaking with a French reporter. Do we have anyone in our government looking out for OUR interests?
